Synopsis
Yatora Yaguchi is a streetsmart second-year high school student with excellent grades, who spends his days hanging out and goofing off with bad company. Though he should be happy with his life, something has always been missing inside of him, and he feels as if he’s just going through the motions.
One day, when Yatora is in the art room, a lone painting catches his eye and he becomes completely captivated by it. He realizes that art is a language without words.
Yatora is awakened to the joy of art, and through it, he is able to express his true feelings for the first time. With the urge to suddenly draw, he opens up his sketchbook and becomes immersed in his work. At long last, Yatora has found his passion, and decides on the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts as his first choice for college.
The competitiveness is unreal, with an acceptance rate of 0.5%, and there’s only 650 days left until the entrance exams! This art-based story of determination follows Yatora, as he dives passionately into the world of art, with hopes of attending the most selective art school in the country.

Yatora Yaguchi: Hiromu Mineta
Yatora is a second-year high school student. Even though he’s always goofing off with bad company, he still manages to keep high marks. Yatora is near the top of the pecking order at school and should be happy with his life, but he feels a void inside of him. After some interactions with art that leave him spellbound, a spark is lit within him and he decides that he wants to attend the most difficult art school in the country to get into—the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts—and major in oil painting.
Ryuji "Yuka" Ayukawa: Yumiri Hanamori
Yuka is a friend and classmate of Yatora’s and is a member of the art club. They're popular with their class and have a very unique way of dressing. The kids at school call them Yuka-chan, a nickname they came up with by using part of their last name, Ayukawa. They hope to attend the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and major in Japanese-style painting. They invite Yatora to join the art club.
Yotasuke Takahashi: Taiki Yamashita
Yotasuke is a young prodigy who Yatora meets at the art cram school. Even though they are the same age, Yotasuke’s artistic talent and skills are on a whole other level. However, he lacks good communication skills and is quiet and reserved. He aspires to attend the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and major in oil painting just like Yatora. He has a bunch of shirts that are practically identical.
Haruka Hashida: Kengo Kawanishi
Haruka goes to the same high school as Yotasuke and meets Yatora at the art cram school. His hobby is looking at other people’s artwork, so he goes around to various art museums to garner extensive knowledge of art. He’s sociable and speaks in a Kansai dialect. He befriends Yatora, who feels self-conscious around the art crowd.
Maki Kuwana: Yume Miyamoto
Maki is a highly respected young girl who goes to the same art cram school as Yatora. She comes from an art family. Her parents are alumni of the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and her sister was at the top of the list of accepted applicants to the university. Thus, she feels a lot of pressure to live up to the same expectations. However, she doesn’t let those feelings show and maintains a cheerful attitude.
Maru Mori: Mayu Aoyagi
Maru is a third-year high school student and the president of the art club. She’s petite and isn’t good at sports but is passionate about art. She aspires to get admitted to the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts’ Painting Department. She paints a picture on a giant canvas which later becomes the catalyst that awakens Yatora to the world of art.
Masako Saeki: Fumi Hirano
Masako is an art teacher at Yatora’s high school and is the art club advisor. She possesses a gentle aura and always has a smile on her face, but gives the art club students sharp-witted advice backed by her knowledge and experience.
Sumida: Katsuya Fukunishi
Sumida is some of the bad company Yatora hangs out with. At first glance he’s a scary looking guy with short hair and no eyebrows, but he has a dependable side to him too and is thinking about marrying his girlfriend. His family runs a tofu shop, and he’s decided to take over the family business after he graduates high school. Among his friends, he’s the most conspicuous and is easily moved to tears.
