Horimiya Mid-Season Impressions - Top Tier Romance Right Out of the Gate

Most romance anime will spend their entire runtime hemming and hawing over whether the main couple will ever admit their feelings for each other, and audiences may never get a satisfying answer no matter how many seasons the show gets. Horimiya, on the other hand, wastes no time introducing us to its adorkable leads and demonstrating their instant chemistry with one another – Miyamura even confesses his love to Hori (sort of) within the first few episodes! With that in mind, let’s dive deeper into this wholesome romance anime and see what it has to offer!

Hori and Miyamura are a Perfect Match

Gorgeous social butterfly Kyouko Hori and withdrawn nerd Izumi Miyamura both have secrets that they hide from their classmates... namely, that their real personalities are completely different outside of school! Hori is at her happiest when she’s tending to the house and taking care of her 5-year-old brother, while Miyamura is a laid-back slacker covered in tattoos and piercings. They first meet out in the real world when Miyamura escorts Hori’s lost little brother home, and he’s so unrecognizable in his punk clothes that Hori doesn’t even realize she already knows him!

They start spending more time together, enjoying the kind of relaxed atmosphere that usually comes from dating someone for a long time. It’s only when the topic of love comes up that they suddenly feel tense, such as when Miyamura tells Hori he likes her while they’re comparing hand sizes (aka holding hands), but backpedals when Hori gets flustered. He tries again a couple episodes later while Hori is recovering from a cold and pretending to be asleep, although whether or not he knew she was awake when he casually slipped in that “I think I’ve been in love with you for a long time” between instructions for her medicine and homework is unknown. Either way, these two are a perfect match and have already made that clear to both the audience and each other within the first third of the series.

The Supporting Cast Has Good Potential

We’re not sure how much emphasis the supporting cast will get in the grand scheme of things, but they’re looking interesting so far. Hori’s strained relationship with her workaholic parents would be intriguing to explore, as well as Miyamura’s past with middle school friend Kouichi. Of particular note, though, is Miyamura’s buddy Tooru – a somewhat ditsy jock who can never catch a break. He gets rejected by Hori before she even showed interest in anyone else, gets his ass kicked by Miyamura in a fight, and accidentally sprays soda all over himself in the middle of a misunderstanding that makes him think Hori and Miyamura did something dirty at school. Despite that, Tooru seems like a reliable guy who supports his friends and may even get a romance of his own at some point. We’re excited to see what happens!

Final Thoughts

The Winter 2021 anime season is full to bursting with amazing shows of every genre, but humble Horimiya is easily holding its own among them with its relatable characters and briskly paced romance plot. We can’t wait to see how Hori and Miyamura’s relationship grows from here!
