Sarazanmai Introduction and Story

In the depths of a river, Japanese folklore tells the tale of an amphibious yokai. It appears as a cross between a human, a frog, and a turtle. This green creature has a special dish atop its head filled with water, and if this dish is broken or spills over, the Kappa loses its strength. Kappa enjoy cucumbers, wrestling and most of all, luring humans into the water to extract a mythical organ found up one's…let's put that behind us.

Sarazanmai follows the story of three young guys, Yasaka Kazuki, Kuji Toi, and Jinnai Enta. They live in Asakusa where the city is decorated with tons of kappa statues. Yasaka, a believer of all things coming full circle, has an interesting encounter with Kuji, and their vigorous scuffle results in a kappa statute breaking. From this incident, they meet Keppi from the Kappa Kingdom. In his fury, Keppi extracts their shirikodama.

Ouch! In order to defeat the kappa-zombies transporting from the Kappa Kingdom, Yasaka, Kuji, and Toi must yell "Sarazanmai" at the opportune moment. This anime centers on strange and interesting events that follow the boys’ quest to breaking this spell.

Why You Should Watch Sarazanmai

1. Everybody Knows Everyone Here!

The characters all have different personalities contributing to an interesting plotline. With only six characters, it’s easy to track who is who on this wild adventure. With so many people and kappa, don’t forget to bring your phones out to take a bunch of selfies! #itslit

2. Hillarious

We don't believe that viewers can get through one episode of Sarazanmai without laughing. Bizzare, crude, and even clever humor come across the dialogue. Although there is a lot going on with keeping up with the story and the eye-catching action sequences, its hard to miss the witty absurdity throughout Sarazanmai.

Why You Should Skip Sarazanmai

1. This is the Stuff of Nightmares

We’ve come across a bunch of yokai creatures in various series, but the kappa is by far the strangest one. Yokai are depicted as frightening and menacing demons, and it’s even scarier when illustrators bring their characters to the screen. Keppi and kappa-zombies from the Kappa Kingdom, however, look as cute as Keroppi. Kerokero, don’t be fooled by the adorableness, because the kappa is out to get you. Watch your six, but only if you watch mine.

2. A Little Goes a Long Way

There isn’t too much coverage about Sarazanmai, and many critics can’t find an end to the opinions on why this series isn’t successful. Some may say that there’s a lack of standard while others may believe the message is overemphasized. Or perhaps it could be how the story is told. Although there is an abundance of original content in Sarazanmai, we believe that writers added too much out-of-place content to ensure this anime is in a class of its own. As a result, it falls under the negative end of the spectrum. Quality over quantity is not present in the case for Sarazanmai.

Final Thoughts

So friends, what do you guys think? Is Sarazanmai a show you’d leap at the chance of watching? Or a series you’ve been ‘toad’ isn’t too great? We at Honey’s highly recommend you watch this anime if you enjoy a fantasy story with tons of action and supernatural elements. Let us know what you all think by leaving your suggestions and comments! Thanks, and see ya!
