Love Death + Robots (LD+R) was an unexpected hit when it first dropped on Netflix in spring 2019. The anthology series featuring short, one-shot episodes by many different teams was so popular that a second season made its way to the online streaming platform in May 2021. Like the first season, the episodes in LD+R Season 2 were fast-paced, creative, addictive and…. short. With some running at only 7 minutes, they were very short.

Okay, admit it, you binged the whole season in one night (or a weekend) after waiting two years for it to come out. And who can blame you? It’s easy to say, “just one more episode” and suddenly, it’s over. Luckily, if you’re hoping for some anime to keep you riding the high from LD+R or fill the gap it has left in your sci-fi needs, we’ve got a couple to suggest. If you’re a big sci-fi fan, you’ve likely already seen Gantz, Elfen Lied, and Ghost in the Shell. These sci-fi anime are much newer, but also feature robots, end-of-days scenarios, comedy, and action all with that SF vibe we love from LD+R.

Eden is set in the distant future, in a time when humans are long gone, all that remains are robots. Or so it seems, until a couple of farming robots find a human baby girl sleeping in stasis and accidentally awaken her. The two begin to raise her secretly, far away from anyone else. As she grows, the robots slowly begin to realise that all of the myths they have heard about humans are not true—in fact, they are far from it.

Major Similarities Between Love Death + Robots and Eden

1. An Optimistic Perspective

Love Death + Robots tends to be bleak throughout most of the episodes, but they nearly all end on a light note. They’re either funny, feel-good, or touching at least in the final minutes. Eden has a similar optimism, finding the good even in the dark and honing in on that feeling. Right now, we can all use a bit of optimism about the future in our lives. Eden gives viewers that feeling, even beyond what LD+R was able to do.

2. Plenty of Robots

Let’s be honest—we love the robots in Love Death + Robots, of course! That’s part of the reason that many people watched the series, to see some great robots and their stories. Eden brings even more robots, with almost all of the main characters being, well, robots! Both shows also show the interaction between robots and humans, both the good and the bad (though mostly the good, in both series!). If LD+R left you wanting more robots, Eden can definitely bring them to you.

Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song begins with a grim opening. The world has been plunged into a terrible war with advanced AIs whose goal is to wipe out humanity. The only chance of survival is by using something from the past—100 years in the past, to be exact. Rewind to the past, where the first autonomous AI Vivy has been tasked with spreading happiness through her songs. When an AI from the future suddenly comes and tells Vivy that she can help to prevent a future war from happening, she is swept away from her humble life at an amusement park with an all-new life mission.

Major Similarities Between Love Death + Robots and Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song

1. A Plethora of Genres Beyond Just Sci-Fi

Love Death + Robots is inherently sci-fi; after all, robots are central to the stories. Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s song is the same. Both go beyond just being sci-fi, though. One of the things that captured the imagination of so many people about Love Death + Robots are the varied stories, featuring action scenes, comedy, mystery, and even romance. Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song is the same. It covers many different emotions throughout the story, giving it a little something for all viewers regardless of what they are looking for beyond just science fiction.

2. Post-Apocalyptic Setting

Many of the Love Death + Robots stories are set in post-apocalyptic, future settings, most of which are quite dark and gritty. It offers a grim look at the future—though with a silver lining at the end in nearly every episode. Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song also has a post-apocalyptic setting. The beginning of the story is dark, full of blood and carnage. But when Vivy enters the picture, she represents hope and pushes the story towards a much brighter ending.

Final Thoughts

When shows are as good as Love Death + Robots, it’s hard not to blast through them, especially when the entire season is released at once. It’s bittersweet because it’s already over, but at least it leaves you with plenty of time to watch something else! We hope if you’re still pining for more LD+R and need that sci-fi fix, these two anime will do the trick. They’re made for sci-fi fans and robot lovers!
