Taishou Otome Otogibanashi (Taisho Otome Fairy Tale): A Fairy Tale That Can Cure Depression!

Fall 2021 has been off to a great start with some amazing anime lined up. One gem of this season is hands down Taishou Otome Otogibanashi (Taisho Otome Fairy Tale). In the early 1920s, Tamahiko Shima was born into a wealthy family and had a want for nothing except love and affection from them. When a tragic accident costs him his mother and cripples his arm, he is banished to the countryside. Tamahiko lives his life alone and depressed until the happy and cheerful Yuzuki Tachibana appears at his door one cold night. When Tamahiko realizes that Yuzuki is his bride, their lives slowly intertwine as the two experience the bloom of first love.

What a Strong Plot!

As a slice of life anime, Taisho Otome Fairy Tale actually has a simple yet beautiful plot. The first episode did a very good job establishing the premise of how Tamahiko was abandoned as a child. We’re able to empathize with him immediately. Moreover, when Yuzuki shows up and starts to take care of the house like her own, it’s a seamless transition because that’s the kind of person she is. But it’s interesting to see Tamahiko’s reactions to this beautiful gem that has entered his life. The pacing is perfect for the kind of anime that it is; we’re able to see Tamahiko suffer through his trauma but Yuzuki is quick to notice and help him through it. The level of wholesomeness watching Yuzuki and Tamahiko comically live together in Old Japan is enough to cure anyone’s depression.

On the other hand, the anime has some tension going on between Tamahiko’s family doing whatever they want and Tamahiko bearing the brunt of it all. When Tamahiko’s dad sends a letter that they have proclaimed him dead, it was heart-wrenching to watch Tamahiko go through it. But there is almost this child-like assurance of hope there. Taisho Otome Fairy Tale is like it says in its name, a fairy tale indeed. Every episode almost guarantees happiness and a happy ending for anyone who watches it, making it one beautiful dream that we get to live through.

Characters That Are Simply Too Adorable

The protagonist Tamahiko simply wanted love but he was denied that all his life. Moreover, the sheer cruelty Tamahiko faced from his family made him wary of anyone who came close to him. But deep inside, he is still kind and Yuzuki sees that before anyone else. Watching Yuzuki slowly and gently break down Tamahiko’s walls and embrace him wholeheartedly is beautiful and memorable. It’s like a wish that comes true for anyone who wants it. Moreover, Yuzuki’s caring nature reminds us of springtime. This adorable and meaningful imagery is brought out as we watch the warmth of spring finally come into Tamahiko’s life which was filled only with the cold of winter.

Budding Romance in Old Japan

The animation for Taisho Otome Fairy Tale only highlights the premise and the time of Japan that the anime is set in. The almost watercolor-like atmosphere along with bright colors of spring and summer color the anime beautifully and make it feel like a dream. Moreover, Yuzuki and Tamahiko getting closer and closer as they experience their first love is shown through the animation in a beautiful way. The scene where Tamahiko and Yuzuki find a beautiful stream that was touched by spring and share the refreshing water was so romantic to watch that we almost wished that we were there experiencing this goodness. The fact that Tamahiko and Yuzuki’s relationship is steadily progressing is a good sign for anyone who loves anime because we might hopefully get to see them confess their love for each other!
