Mairimashita! Iruma-kun has continued to be a—somewhat surprisingly—solid comedy series that makes good use of its fantastic, demon-themed school setting to create a memorable cast and a plethora of funny situations. Today, we're ranking and talking about five of our favorite characters in terms of one of the essentials of Japanese comedy anime: wackiness (or just wack if you're feeling a bit whimsical). In any case, let's give these devils their due and get started!
5. Kerori Crocell/Kuromu
Starting us off is freshman Kerori Crocell who, despite having a bit of a tragic backstory, is wacky due to her comically split personality between her school life and secret Akudol (idol) career as Kuromu. Ordinarily, Kerori is extremely shy, nervous, and plain, trying her best not to stand out at all (quite like Iruma himself), even employing magical glasses for more camouflage.
Whenever she gets nervous, Kerori's prone to haphazardly using her ice abilities at the slightest provocation. This is basically the exact opposite of her ultra-popular, attention-seeking idol form, complete with cutesy outfit and matching mannerisms. Seeing her sometimes struggle to keep her act straight with Iruma is the core of her wackiness, along with her drastic style change!
4. Dosanko
Although plot-wise a minor character, Donsanko makes a big impression with her vivacious and flirty personality paired with her incredibly goofy appearance. Based on character design alone, she is probably the wackiest in our list today with her prominent and iconic cycloptic eye, starfish-like body, and luscious, uhh, kissable lips!? Dosanko acts like she's a real heartthrob which seems hilariously off-base, at least by most human standards, but is apparently completely genuine in her belief and famously frank in her comments. Her unique appearance and haughty, forward attitude makes her the most wack and arguably memorable side character in the whole series!
3. Ameri/Amelie Azazel
Student council president Ameri Azazel is an intimidating character in more ways than one with her commanding voice, strict disposition, and uhh, powerfully curvaceous physique. This image, however, gets shattered fairly early in the story as both her tsundere feelings towards Iruma and her obsession with a certain series of forbidden books—which, amusingly, are actually a stereotypical shoujo manga—are revealed. Somewhat similarly to Kerori, Ameri's wackiness has to do with the strong contrast in her personality between the strict seriousness of her usual self and bubbly girlishness which is equal parts funny and endearing, particularly her passion for trying to reenact scenes from shoujo manga!
2. Lord Sullivan
The demon lord who brought Iruma to the underworld in the first place, the bonkers-powerful Lord Sullivan is also, well, bonkers! Beyond his over-the-top displays of magical mastery, Iruma's adoptive grandpa is a deep well of wack, regularly going full “egg mode” (well, super-deformed but this is funnier) when he overly enthusiastically dotes on Iruma and often responsible for introducing new potential complications into Iruma's life. Despite this randomness, it does seem like there's some method to his madness at least and his antics are a big source of laughs in the series!
1. Clara Valac
And ROLLING into number 1 is, of course, Clara Valac, which should come to no surprise to anyone familiar with Mairimashita! Iruma-kun as she basically serves as the physical embodiment of wack in this anime. Wearing living(?!) slippers Connor and Murph and able to seemingly perfectly reproduce any number of items from her pockets, among other things (like the previously-mentioned rolling). Clara's primordial, child-like wackiness can be very endearing, making her the fan-favorite of many thanks to countless funny moments like being tamed by her own familiar Falfal, her family's song and dance routine, and more. We absolutely adore Clara and her wackiness is a big part of that, and the anime as a whole!
Final Thoughts
Altogether, Mairimashita! Iruma-kun has a lot of great characters, many of which are also quite wacky, as you might expect for a comedy anime take on going to school in hell. We hope you enjoyed our little discussion of who we think are the wackiest! What do you think?
