Three years ago in 2020, the anime world was introduced to Anos Voldigoad, a reincarnated man who was once the Demon King who not only ruled with kindness but also saved several races by sacrificing his life. The Misfit of Demon King Academy—which is a bit of an unusual name in hindsight—was an enjoyable fantasy series and when season 2 dropped this winter 2023, our wings were flapping with hype here at Honey’s Anime.
We are once more thrown into the world of Anos and his crew as they begin a new semester but things already are going quite astray when a new threat seems to be born into the world, and it could be closer than even Anos was aware of. What has changed in season 2 and if you are a fan of the original, should you be excited? Let’s find out with our first impression of The Misfit of Demon King Academy II!
Anos’ Voice Has Changed but His OP Self Is Still the Same!
If you felt like Anos had a deeper, more manly voice—despite being a teenager—in season 2, you wouldn’t be mistaken. Due to reasons, we won’t dive into—you can search Google and find out quite quickly, the original voice actor for Anos has changed from Tatsuhisa Suzuki to Yuichiro Umehara and it can be a bit jarring at first, but we got used to it by episode three if we’re being honest. That though is the only major change to anything that is the Misfit of Demon King Academy as the OP Anos and his band of equally OP heroes/heroines return without missing a beat. This can lead to mixed reactions as by episode three we already see a kind of eye-rolling pattern happening.
Anos once again has his legacy being tested like in season 1 by an unknown force who then tests his powers, like in season 1, and eventually, it leads to revelations that cause Anos to have to show he isn’t a weakling despite his new form…like in season 1. Everything in season 2 of The Misfit of Demon King Academy feels repeated and while we are only three episodes in and things could change dramatically it’s hard to shake the feeling of déjà vu every episode…
Same Great Animation
While the story and themes have already shown they aren’t changing much—again at least, the animation is following suit and if anything, season 2 looks better than the first! Episode 2 had some cool moments where some of the girls were fighting against one of the new pawn enemies and—no spoilers—used a special attack that was shocking to see in such an early episode. Anos’ special magical abilities have a bit more flare already as well making season 2 of The Misfit of Demon King Academy look sharper than a few years ago and that is always a welcome sight!
Does This Series Need an Overhaul? Nahhh.
As fans of The Misfit of Demon King Academy, season 2 might not be pushing the limits of narrative and hasn’t surprised us even once yet. That being said, come on…what isn’t there to love about a cool OP main character like Anos and having a bunch of equally powerful allies who are possible waifu/husbando material! In our opinion, The Misfit of Demon King Academy II works because it has a simple plot that is just exciting and exhilarating to watch.
Yes, Anos overcomes challenges two times in the last three episodes in almost similar formats—once being a game of Who’s Who and the other being a test with a talking tree creature—but it's funny to watch enemies think they can outsmart the 2000+ Demon King reincarnate and somehow win. In an anime like The Misfit of Demon King Academy, simple is perfect and that is so far why we aren’t complaining about more of the same…though this does lead us into a major worry that has now formed after these three episodes.
Why We Worry About Anos’ Future
Sadly, season 2s of anime can go quite well or very badly…or be good then turn bad towards the end… We’re looking at you The Promised Neverland. Change isn’t always necessary for a successful second season and sometimes, too much change can turn off fans who really just want more of what they loved before. Seeing Anos use both his OP magic and intelligence was a highlight of the first season, just like how we loved watching the resurrected hero, Kanon or better known now as Lay, use some super flash sword skills. Season 1 of The Misfit of Demon King Academy worked well for a fantasy anime and season 2 already is fun so far if not a bit predictable. However, what worries us is that if this season continues with this format will it be as exciting as the first, or will we become bored of what we’ve already experienced just a few years ago?
Lord Anos has returned in a slightly altered way but so far, we are enjoying The Misfit of Demon King Academy II. Is it going to impress us as much as the first season…that will be decided by the end. As for now, if you loved season 1 then guess what? Season 2 of The Misfit of Demon King Academy is about the same and that will probably mean you’ll enjoy seeing Anos overcome EVERY challenge he has using his former prestige, title, and new OP skills. Fans though may find season 2 to be worrisome and that is equally understandable…but for now we have hopes this will be a solid season overall!
