1. Boogiepop and Others (2019)

  • Genres: Psychological, Supernatural, Horror, Thriller
  • Air Date: January 4 2019

Do you have a dream?

Unfortunately, I don't have anything like that...

What We Got:

What is a rumor? Is it a concept we should fear as real or is it just fabricated stories and tales crafted by people? If you believe in rumors do you then believe in the being known as Boogiepop? Many claim this paranormal being is fake and is meant to scare children and be used as a nighttime story for those who like to be scared. Yet, what if we told you Boogiepop isn’t just a make-believe thing but a real entity whose soul job is to weed out evil from the world. Let your mind wander into what is real and what is fiction as you learn the truth about Boogiepop…

Looking back at our three-episode impression of Boogiepop wa Warawanai we can honestly say, we were right. Boogiepop wa Warawanai from the first episode to its eighteenth was confusing and often caused our minds to scramble as we pieced together what was real and what was fake. There was also quite a bit of real-world nuance that made us sit down and question how relationships should work and what we were doing with our own lives. Boogiepop wa Warawanai is a strange anime series that maybe many won’t consider the best ever but honestly, we kind of enjoyed it. If you want an even more in-depth look at reasons why you should—or shouldn’t— watch Boogiepop wa Warawanai then check out our full review on the site.

2. Kakegurui xx (2nd Season)

  • Genres: Mystery, Drama, Psychological
  • Air Date: January 9 2019

This is the 2nd Season of Kakegurui.
Gambling is my reason for existence.

The famous Hyakkaou Private Academy has a social class system. The top of the school, the School Council, is controlled by gambling. If you win you enter heaven - if you lose, hell. In this insane academy, those good at gambling are the envy of everyone, and those who aren’t suffer.

One day, a girl transfers into this academy. A girl called Yumeko Jabami...

What We Got:

Yumeko and “friends” return in another season of high-risk gambling antics in Kakegurui XX! With a new term of school beginning the students of Hyakkaou Private Academy eagerly await not new tests or possible new friends to be made but what new gambles will earn them the most respect! However, with some of the new games being offered the stakes will be even higher—and possibly even more deadly—than ever before. Can Yumeko win even when her life sometimes might be on the chopping block? Time to throw in your hand and see if you will win it big or come up with a terrible hand!

Kakegurui XX—or simple Kakegurui 2nd season—went all out this season with its 12-episode run. One thing we noticed in our original thoughts of Kakegurui XX is that the gambles were amped up from their smaller risks in season 1 to a whole new level in season 2! This time around people are risking their own lives just to show they are confident in their game playing abilities! We look back and were surprised at what Kakegurui XX was offering initially and that didn’t change much by the end of the season. Season 2 was heart pounding watching someone play a game—if you can even call some of these bets games—and wondering would the main characters win or would they lose? There were some moments where we had hoped for a bit of a different focus here and there—namely the series becomes a bit formulaic near the end—but overall our original thoughts hit the jackpot. Kakegurui XX was pretty darn thrilling and truly showed the thriller fans out there how scary a bet can be sometimes.

3. Yakusoku no Neverland

  • Genres: Sci-fi, Dark Fantasy, Thriller
  • Air Date: January 11 2019

She’s adored like a mother, but she’s not a mother.
The children who live among the each other are not siblings.

Graceful House is a home where children without parents live.
Even if they are not connected by blood, Mama and the 38 children live together in bliss. It is an irreplaceable home.

However, one day it is announced that their everyday life as they know it is going to be coming to an end...

What We Got:

Grace Field House seems like the pitch perfect orphanage for those unfortunately abandoned by their families and are in need of a loving home. Emma, Ray and Norman are just some of the children here at the house who have enjoyed each other’s company with others around their age or even younger. One day though everything changes when they learn the truth about those “adopted”. Outside the walls of the home lies a deadly world and now the three children must find a means to escape their possible future fate! With their intelligence, cunning and resilience they will begin a breakout to enter an unknown world…

Our last series to reflect on comes in the form of Yakusoku no Neverland which hands down has been one of the best series in 2019, thriller or not. From the first episode and to the last—that being episode 12—Yakusoku no Neverland was a truly heart pumping adventure. While we did have some gripes about the predictability of the show in our first impressions—which we can’t deny Yakusoku no Neverland can be predictable—we came to see that there was more to this series than meets the eye. Yakusoku no Neverland aimed at constantly taking viewers from one mindset to another by throwing various challenges for the kids to face whether it was from some older adult and/or the numerous unknows that existed beyond the house. Is Yakusoku no Neverland perfect? No, it has flaws here and there but as an anime series it provided a great 12-episode run to keep us viewers engaged and threw some surprises here and there that caught us off guard. Right now, we’re currently reading and reviewing the manga of Yakusoku no Neverland chapter by chapter and we will say it’s an even better thriller experience. We recommend watching the anime first and then making the debate if you want to wait for a season 2—which should be releasing in 2020—or picking up the manga and diving into that experience.
