Top 10 Characters in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1)

Recently, Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony released to the world with a whole slew of new characters thrust into a deadly killing game. Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony was a ton of fun and easily one of the best games of the series. However, we here at Honey’s Anime will never forget where the series all began properly. Back in 2010, Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1) began the series acting as the first entry and within it we had our first ill-fated cast of Ultimate Students. To remember that great beginning to such an amazing franchise, we decided to reflect on the original game and some of our favorite characters in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1).

Contained within this article, we here at Honey’s Anime decided to list off the best characters—in our opinion—from Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1). We will also be explaining why they deserve to be on this illustrious list of characters in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1) as well to convince you the reader and prove our reasoning. With that, we welcome you to our Top 10 Characters in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1). Scroll on down and see if your favorite characters in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1) made the grade or were outshined by their peers.

Name10. Yasuhiro Hagakure

Love or hate him, Yasuhiro Hagakure starts off our list. Known as the Ultimate Clairvoyant, Yasuhiro should have been able to see the events of the series before they happened but as we learn his power is kind of weak. Thankfully, while Yasuhiro might be poor at telling the future, he was good at something; Being the main form of comic relief in the first game. With his jumbo hair and silly attitude, Yasuhiro bought us a lot of humor to an otherwise bleak setting.

If you need some examples of the silly Yasuhiro, all we need to do is examine some of the quotes from Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1). In Chapter 1, one of our favorite lines is when he was late to a meeting with the fellow Ultimate Students. Here, Yasuhiro says “I didn’t oversleep, just so you know. Nope, got lost! I blame the Bermuda Triangle…” Quite frankly, this is one of the lines that made us here at Honey’s Anime know Yasuhiro was going to be destined for comedy. Which is good because Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1) needed it at times. The whole killing game was indeed stressful and Yasuhiro would tell you that’s bad for your skin to be stressed.

Name9. Sakura Ogami

At first glance, Sakura Ogami can be considered anything but feminine. Bulging biceps, a huge frame and incredibly tall, Sakura is more man-like than your everyday girl. As we learn, Sakura fell in love with a strong warrior known as Kenshiro but when he died, Kenshiro passed on his title of Strongest Human Alive. Here, Sakura trained in both body and mind to become the living embodiment of strong. Though we love that about Sakura.

Sakura, as we know, was also a very important character in the first Danganronpa title. During the motive video release, Monokuma blackmailed poor Sakura to do his bidding. In return, those Sakura cared for would be kept “safe” and thus, Sakura was forced into an ultimatum. Sakura was meant to cause those in the game to commit murder if the game itself became too peaceful. Sakura, at one point, would not allow herself to be tied to such a restriction and quickly was forgiven for her mole status. Sakura might have been tough on the inside and out but we all can agree, her heart was tougher and that made her an all too important character in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1).

Name8. Leon Kuwata

Every killing game has to begin with the first murder and that’s why Leon Kuwata is so important in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1). While Leon acted initially in self-defense when he was attacked by Sayaka Maizono, Leon could have left her and warned the others. Instead. Leon returned to kill Sayaka and became the first murderer in the game. The Ultimate Baseball Star went from a bright future to a very dark one and that is a shame indeed.

Though let’s be honest for a moment here, folks. Imagine if Leon didn’t kill Sayaka. Then Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1) wouldn’t start properly. Everyone would be alive and happy yes, but no murders would need to be solved. That’s why Leon, we might hate you killed Sayaka the Ultimate Idol, but we thank you for allowing us to begin Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1) properly.

Name7. Aoi Asahina

One of the survivors of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1) comes in the form of Aoi Asahina. Cute, energetic and a bit air headed, Aoi is perfect for our list of the Top 10 Characters in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1). Though, are the reasons we mentioned the only reason Aoi is on our list? Well, glad you asked; Let us explain.

Aoi might not be a super astute student and/or mystery solver in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1) but her energy and kindness make up for her lack of detective skills. Aoi would be there several times for someone when they needed companionship and equally, would stand up for something when she felt someone crossed the line. An example of this comes in the form of going toe to toe with Byakuya when he said some rather harsh words about her friend Sakura. There was a brief moment where Aoi was angry—namely after Sakura was killed—but eventually, she realized her anger needed to be vented into stopping the killing game and we were glad for that, a mad Aoi makes our hearts sad and equally mad, too.

Name6. Byakuya Togami

Smart, cunning, cruel and a loner; These are just a few of the adjectives we could use to describe Byakuya Togami. In many ways, these principals of Byakuya making him believe he is the best could be considered reasons not to have him on our list. However, Byakuya does several important things in the Danganronpa series and especially, in Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc (V1). Time to show the world Byakuya’s best moments.

Early on, we wouldn’t blame anyone for hating Byakuya. We, too, here at Honey’s Anime felt some utter hate for this cold dude. However, in not one but several trials, Byakuya used his strong mind to help solve various cases. Equally, Byakuya was quick to name those who were innocent as criminals but often, he would realize his errors and correct his thought process. Byakuya would be one of the survivors of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1) and this would lead to a brighter future thanks to his influence and money sense.

Name5. Toko Fukawa

Bookworms like Toko Fukawa can be seen as normal people. Even with the title of Ultimate Writing Prodigy, Toko isn’t seen as anything special in the beginning of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1). Though all it takes is for one sneeze and we see something amazing happen. Toko goes from Ultimate Writer Prodigy to a serial killer known as Genocide Jack.

As we learn, Toko at an early age was treated incredibly poorly by her parents. This would cause her mind to snap and gain an alter ego in the form of Genocide Jack. While Toko is quick to get scared and tense up when things go array, Genocide Jack is quick to lash out on those who annoy her and isn’t afraid of using her deadly scissors as threat devices. Toko also provides some fun moments when she falls in love with Byakuya. We can’t tell if we should be envious of Byakuya or scared for him.

Name4. Monokuma

The robotic bear responsible for overseeing the killing game taking place in Hope’s Peak Academy. That is the role of Monokuma and he makes sure to take this role very seriously. Quick to agitated and even quicker to let loose some dark comedy, Monokuma was a must have on our list of the Top 10 Characters in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1). The white and black bear might be scary and far from cuddly but we love him as a character.

Created by Junko Enoshima—who may or may not be on this list—Monokuma acts a propagator and mediator in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1). While he can’t directly influence the game, Monokuma will tend to bend the rules slightly making the Ultimate Students want to kill one another for various reasons. Monokuma also acts as the judge for the class trials and deals out the punishment for those who are proven guilty. Monokuma is scary and definitely evil, but as far as antagonists go in video games, Monokuma is one of the best around.

Name3. Makoto Naegi

Hope’s Peak Academy was supposed to be a great place for those lucky enough to be enrolled. That’s why, when Makoto Naegi won a random raffle to go to Hope’s Peak Academy, he truly thought he gained the role of Ultimate Lucky Student. Though as we know having played Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1), Makoto was far from lucky as he ended up becoming yet another student in the deadly killing game. However, Makoto would become the most important character in the Danganronpa series and it would all start in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1).

Players would end up controlling Makoto as they solved each case using his investigative skills and his unending sense of hope. Makoto would continually solve cases to save his new friends and in turn would never fall victim to what Monokuma and the mastermind wanted, despair. That’s why Makoto found his name being changed from Ultimate Lucky Student to Ultimate Hope and we agree, it was fitting for his character. Makoto earns the 3rd spot on our list and we know many of you out there won’t disagree with our choice here.

Name2. Junko Enoshima

We know some of you probably were filled with despair not seeing Junko Enoshima appear on the list in the first 8 spots. Well, as you can see we saved Junko for 2nd on our list because she is indeed a special type of girl. Junko, as we all know, is the true mastermind behind Hope’s Peak Academy killing game and The Biggest, Most Awful, Most Tragic Event in Human History which makes her quite an evil girl. Yet, let’s face it, folks, Junko’s evil nature makes Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1) truly an amazing story.

Junko Enoshima started off as fooling everyone that she died in the beginning of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1). However, the one who died was actually Junko’s servant and twin sister, Mukuro Ikusaba. Using her deceased status, Junko hid within Hope’s Peak Academy and watched her robotic bear Monokuma deal out her killing game ideals and revel as she witnessed despair falling upon all the survivors after each kill. Junko would eventually lose to Makoto’s hope, but Junko’s despair wouldn’t be completely gone from the world of Danganronpa. Even after death, Junko Enoshima’s legacy would last and equally, she would be in our minds as the most interesting villain ever.

Name1. Kyoko Kirigiri

Known as the Ultimate Detective, Kyoko Kirigiri takes number one on our Top 10 Characters in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1). While Makoto would solve many of the murders, Kyoko would always be near by helping him using her skills as an Ultimate Detective. Starting off cold and callous, Kyoko warms up to some of the students—especially Makoto—and is a big factor in stopping the killing game in Hope’s Peak Academy. Though we aren’t done showing our love for Kyoko and have much more to talk about.

Kyoko’s past can be considered pretty tough. Raised by her grandfather, Kyoko was taught her detective skills by her grandfather and would eventually solve numerous cases where she would also fall victim to a failure that caused her hands to burn thus, why she wears gloves all throughout Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1). Though these tough life lessons would make her think harder about every situation Kyoko comes across and eventually, make her into the Ultimate Detective that helped Makoto, Aoi, Byakuya and Toko all survive and escape the school. Kyoko is easily our favorite girl of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1) and the best character of the game hands down.

Final Thoughts

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1) was an excellent game and even today, we have such fond memories of it. It brought to the world a cast of unique and quirky students and that’s why this list was a real tough one to make. Honestly, none of the various characters in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (V1) were bad and if we could, we would have featured all of them on here.
