Top 4 Anime We Love to Hate [Spring 2017]

Introduction

Some anime we can't help but hate. Whether it's the most popular anime of the season or a secret gem that other people apparently love, some anime series seem to have been created purely to be hated on. Sometimes you drop them straight away, not wanting to deal with them, but sometimes you just can't help yourself. You continue watching episode after painful episode, and you start to realise you love to hate it. Sound familiar? Well, here's our selections for four anime from spring 2017 we just can't help but love to hate!

1. Fukumenkei Noise

I am not going to sit here and hold hands with you and pretend like this is a good anime. Sorry not sorry, it’s not good, the story is not that interesting, and it’s not engaging in the least. The premise starts out okay which is that Nino is in search of Momo and she happens to meet Kanade who is there too along for the ride. It’s supposed to be a love triangle, and I guess it could be, but this, at least what I watched before I gave up on this cheap, bootleg version of Fuuka (which do NOT get me started on because that was TERRIBLE), was not a well thought out anime. There are countless shows that are just better and have done the whole love triangle better and made it more interesting. Some shows that spring to mind fast are Nana, White Album 2, Macross Delta, and more. Now I know some people will give me flak as a man for saying that a shoujo show is bad, but I rather enjoy shoujo series. This poorly balanced show is all about Nino singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and being emo about something that happened almost a DECADE ago in her life. I get it. It’s high school, so angst, love, feelings blah blah blah, but girl please you are going to leave high school and move on to better things so quickly. Also the art is really really cringey bad.

2. Busou Shoujo Machiavellianism

First of all, the author has misspelled Machiavellianism in his “original English title” as machiavellism, so you know we are already in for a good time. I should also preface this by saying that I translated the database page that we have for this here on Honey’s Anime and as such, I have seen what it is like in Japanese and how it is now in English. Get ready for another generic harem anime. I enjoy referring to this as Rakudai Kishi no Gakusen Toshi no Hundred, because that is what it is. Some dude needs to dominate the strong women in his school and magically come out on top. The best part? He is some nobody kicked out of his previous school for fighting and is going to take down all of these super powerful girls? Mmk. This is another poorly conceived semi-harem. I cannot call it a straight up harem because I am not watching it. That’s right, the initial story, trailers, and character bios were so bad, that I was completely turned off of the show altogether. Some people seem to be liking it somewhat, but it barely has over a 7 on MAL and the rating will probably not go up after the show ends. I hate to hate anime, but this show is full of what I do not want to watch yet again; more basic tropes, whiny characters, and another basic story. I enjoy critiquing anime and their pitfalls because I think that shows can do and be better, but it really takes a lot for me to dislike something to the point where I look at it and say “no”.

3. Tsuki ga Kirei

First off, I’d like to say that I find it very difficult to hate anime. I’m actually more the sort to watch pretty much anything without complaint. But if I had to choose an anime from spring 2017 that just isn’t doing much for me, the first would be Tsuki ga Kirei. Why? What’s wrong with this cute-but-awkward romance slice-of-life anime?! I hear you say. Well, that’s pretty much it. While cute romance/slice of life is all good, I can’t stand watching the characters in Tsuki ga Kirei squirm around each other. The awkward silences physically hurt me. And the whole purity thing? Yawn. I’d rather watch a hot mess of relationships where everyone screws over everyone else, like Kuzu no Honkai. There’s just not enough spice in Tsuki ga Kirei for me to enjoy it as much as everyone else seems to.

4. Little Witch Academia

Oh boy. As enjoyable as some episodes of Little Witch Academia are, it’s number two on my maybe-I-should-drop-this list. There’s a very clear reason for this: Akko. I can’t stand her. At first I felt the need to defend her against the haters - hey, at least she’s trying in her own way and being true to herself! - but as the episodes played on the more she started to grate on me. She so irresponsible and, considering how much she loves Shiny Chariot, she doesn’t half waste her time bothering other people instead of actually trying to learn any magic. Poor bland little Lotte annoys me too… Although Sucy and Amanda are sharing the Best Girl spot. Oh, and Andrew is a babe. But really, this whole series would be a whole lot more interesting with a different protagonist. Sorry.
