Year 2015's fall season did not showcase a myriad of fantasy-themed animes and neither did it bring us much hype over a particular fantasy themed anime, nor the whole fantasy theme in general. Despite the limited choices of fantasy themed anime for Fall 2015, the whole season compensated the lack of fantasy themed anime with the high quality on the ones that were produced.

For example, if you are a fan of magic in anime set in a high-school setting, consider yourself very lucky as there are a few selections on this list alone which employs the high-school setting to illustrate a key element in fantasy themed works - magic.

Join us as we pick out fantasy themed animes in Fall 2015 and what they have to offer!

5. Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen

  • Episodes: 25

Following up from its prequel of the same name, Utawarerumono, the series begins in quite a similar manner. A nameless man wakes up in the middle of nowhere with nothing but a hospital gown. He meets a half-animal half-girl like creature named Kuon, who declared herself his guardian. Normally it would be weird, but if you've just escaped death by being chased by a giant insect and then morphing into a giant red slime, you'd be happy with anything. And do begins a new life for this young man.

Utawarerumono is a simple anime. There is no epic magic fight scenes or legendary creatures inside. It is simply a guy who had to adapt to a brand new life in a new world where it's inhabitants possess other-worldly physical characteristics (tails, cat ears etc.). So far, the presentation is almost kind of like a fantasy slice of life. If simplicity is your thing, you can try this anime out.

4. Garo: Guren no Tsuki

  • Episodes: 26

Instead of an European setting, this alternative setting takes place in ancient Japan, during the Heian era. In this part of Japan, where the rich is heavily protected and the poor are left to fend for themselves, demons and monsters known as 'Horror' roam the streets and attack humans after sundown. While the situation may look very dim, there exists a group of heroes that battles against these monsters, protecting the townsfolk.

Disregarding the alternative setting, it can even be said to be the second season of Garo. Fans of the original Garo can expect the same level of battle dynamics that this new season brings. This series is a mash up of samurai swordplay and supernatural entities. The swordplay if anything, has been enhanced with the supernatural abilities which gives it the extra edge during battle. While samurais can also be classed as fantasy, this anime is a whole new and different kind of fantasy. It is a must try for samurai lovers and fantasy lovers alike.

What happens when you always wish for a sister and that wish comes true? For Basara, that wish came true but unbeknownst to him, his new sisters are actually a Demon Lord and a Succubus. Continuing where the previous season left off, we see the 'family' of Basara, Mio and Yuki trying to live a normal life. Unfortunately for them, magic wielding human suddenly appears, leading them back to a life of survival.

Like the previous season for those who have watched it, the series is primarily focused on the themes of magic and highly advanced spells with large AOEs, lightning speed projectiles and magic-enhanced fighting. The series have also decided to emphasize more on sisterly-brotherly love between the main characters and with Yuki being a succubus and all, it makes it all the more easier. This anime spares no effort in toning down ecchi moments between the siblings.

This anime is for you, especially if you like fantasy elements, and you are a fan of siscon. If you think that incest is morally wrong, be glad that they are technically not siblings, but Mio still calls Basara Onii-chan, so it is not that wrong after all!

2. Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Oct 2015 - Dec 2015

The 35th Test Platoon has been contemptuously called the Small Fry Platoon ever since their initiation at the Inquisition. This small unit consists of Kusanagi Takeru acting as captain, Usagi Saionji (we just call her the bunny girl imouto) and Suginami Ikaruga, the analyst and intel provider of the group. They are soon joined by Ootori Ouka, a demoted high ranking officer of the Inquisition and Nikaidou Mari, a witch that was left to the custody of the platoon. Tasked with restraining the use of unlawful magic, watch this platoon literally screwing up every D-ranked mission as they find compromises with each other along the way! Maybe there is truth to the nickname Small Fry platoon...

Taimadou feels like a mixture of genres. The main theme however, would still be the usage of magic and the war with magic users. This show is quite underrated, possibly due to a blend of many elements and genre. It tries to blend magic and action together, something like Fate/Stay Night. Although it falls short from Fate, it honestly does a decent job combining both elements as it keeps you enthralled by the numerous magical-themed battle scenes with projectiles and protective shields.

Then there is harem tag... If you're a fanservice kind of viewer, you'll be glad to know that this anime has numerous scenes and situations specifically built for fanservice. There is after all, comedy to this anime as well.

We recommend you to watch this Fall 2015 anime, not just for the fantasy theme, but in general as well. While appearing disjointed, the anime sums all of the elements in a tidy package with no exemplifying qualities but yet offer good snippets and bits of each.

1. Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Oct 2015 - Dec 2015

Literally called The Chivalry of a Failed Knight, Rakudai sees Ikki Kurogane on his journey to be inducted as a Mage-Knight. He is the representation of effort in this series, being born with average abilities. Next we have Stella Vermillion, a rank A Apprentice Knight. She is the representation of natural talent in the series (but does work hard as well). Whatever will happen next, as this seemingly mismatch of characters meet for the first time... when Ikki walked in on Stella changing clothes???

Does this sound familiar? Ikki walks into Stella changing. Realising the predicament he is in, he stated that he will not lie about not seeing anything and get embarrassed (unlike a certain person from Asterisk) and proceeded to strip as well to even the odds. Very cliché, very funny to watch every time.

You will soon realise that Asterisk and Rakudai both share very common elements such as the numerous fanservice, the usage of highly advanced magic spells, a mismatched duo in battle scenes, and even sharing the same premise for the meeting of characters.

Why we placed Rakudai in the list however, is the meeting sequence. While Asterisk plays a cliché part, Rakudai makes a joke of the cliché and ends up in the same comical situation. You can already guess that Rakudai employs more comedic elements. Further, Rakudai keeps closer to the theme of fantasy with the whole world based strictly on magic. Above all else, we simply just love the opening. To save yourself from an embarrassing situation, you embarrass yourself. Pure genius!
