Mob Psycho 100 II Preview (No Spoilers)

As Mob grows more comfortable being himself and building relationships with other people, his mentor Reigen begins to go through his own crisis of faith. As the pair continue to solve supernatural cases at Spirits and Such Consultation Office, the espers associated with the shadowy organization Claw appear again. The leader of Claw, Toichiro Suzuki, is ready to reveal his plan for world domination. Only Mob and his friends coming together have any hope of stopping him.

Arataka Reigen Highlights (Spoilers Beyond This Point)

1. Confidence Makes the Man.

Reigen exudes boundless confidence in the face of all situations, including when he’s totally out of his element. As a professional conman, his outward persona is so boasting that it’s been made more and more a real part of his personality. With so many characters in Mob Psycho 100 being unsure of things, Reigen is there to show that belief is the difference between those who falter and those who rise to the occasion.

2. He’s Just a Normal Guy Fighting Espers.

As the espers of Mob Psycho 100 flaunt their various powers and abilities, Reigen is not one to be overshadowed. Though he is no psychic, he still gets stylish cut-ins and narrated descriptions of his “attacks” during fight scenes. Even powerful espers like Ryo Shimazaki assume Reigen is some sort of master who can completely hide his presence, when in fact the reason his powers can’t be detected is that he doesn’t have any.

3. Mob and Reigen Are The Ultimate Team.

A powerful esper who has a hard time understanding people and a fast-talking people pleaser are a match made in heaven. Reigen is the glue that helps Mob be the best person he can be. Their arrangement may have begun with Reigen looking to use Mob’s powers for his own benefit, but Reigen deeply understands and cares about Mob, going so far as to drive business away because the task was making Mob uncomfortable.

4. Fight Fire With Humor.

Mob Psycho 100 is full of gags and situations where comedy saves the day. From exorcisms performed with copious amounts of salt to his overeagerness to overhaul Spirits and Such’s website into a gaudy mess, there’s no shortage of hilarious situations when Reigen is involved. Who else is crazy enough to try to sucker punch a psychic?

5. What it Means to Be a Good Person.

Mid-season in episodes 6 and 7 of Mob Psycho 100 II, a lot of insight is given into Reigen and how flawed he is. When he puts down Mob’s growth in an attempt to feel better about himself, he exposes the deep-seated self-loathing he hides behind his bravado. As Reigen’s reputation crashes, Mob gives him back the very thing that Reigen gave him when they met, the idea that simply being a good person is the noblest ideal, and that Mob will always believe in him because Reigen will always believe in Mob.

Final Thoughts

Reigen is a cool and collected even when he’s being decidedly uncool and out of his mind. Despite his flaws, the endearing relationship he has with Mob makes Reigen a character that’s easy to love. Espers and spirits beware because his punches and kicks are covered in salt and coming to exorcize you if the price is right. Follow Reigen’s advice and be a good person by telling us in the comments what you think of him!
