5 Badass Chicks Who Stole Our Hearts this Winter 2020

Many anime fans have waifus. Usually, these are cute, moe, adorable girls that one would just love to have by their side because they’re sweet, innocent, or really really sexy (read: ooki oppai). But then there are the other girls. The smart, tough ones that don’t take shit from anybody. They may not all have the biggest racks or devote themselves hopelessly to the main character but they don’t need to because they stand tall on their own. Usually with a man they respect or a group of close friends by their side.

Winter 2020 was a treasure trove of these killer queens. Some cute, some voluptuous, all intelligent, and all would have anyone saying “Yes ma’am. Sorry, ma’am.” if they got on their bad side, no matter how adorable a few of them look. Hope you’re ready for the 5 most badass chicks we fell in love with this season!

5. Koharu Hondoumachi from ID:INVADED

This tiny rookie detective is wet behind the ears when she joins Kura but she still gives chase when she spots Fukuda getting away, showing she truly cares about her job. Her badassery is proven further when she dives head-first into Fukuda’s drill so that her team could find her and catch the perp. Koharu is not afraid to put her life on the line for her duties.

After getting a hole drilled in her head, Koharu loses her chipper nature and becomes more serious, aggressive, tougher, and more self-confident and, honestly, we’re not mad at that! And when we get to see her pilot the Mizuhanome and Inception her way from well to well, we also find that the petite 23-year-old is also truly a brilliant detective, making us admire her even more.

4. Kotoko Iwanaga from Kyokou Suiri (In/Spectre)

The 15-year-old Goddess of Wisdom is a petite, blonde, purple-eyed loli. But don’t let that fool you, Kotoko is a force to be reckoned with. When she agreed to become the Goddess of Wisdom, she lost a leg and an eye in exchange for being able to communicate with and control yokai and become a mediator between our realm and the supernatural one. No teenager we know would agree to something like that!

As if that badassery wasn’t enough, this adorable little girl knows what she wants and she takes it! When she meets Kuro, her interest is piqued and she basically just tells him that he is now her boyfriend. Kotoko is intelligent, kind, playful, and caring but she also has a silver tongue and is incredibly shrewd, as shown by her ability to literally manipulate the opinions of people online to defeat the main boss of the series. Ok, so maybe Kotoko can also be a waifu, but that doesn’t take away her badassery!

3. Sayaka Kanamori from Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na! (Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!)

Kanamori is the one sane member of the Motion Picture Club. She seems to be greedy but it’s really because she grew up helping her grandparents run their store and what she learned has led her to become ambitious, opportunistic, and focused on her goals, or in this case, the club’s goals.

Kanamori is quick-witted and intelligent with a special knack for talking her way into winning arguments and getting her way with her calculating and manipulative nature and she is not afraid to raise her voice if needed either! She’s sarcastic, self-confident, stands her ground, and will not take no for an answer… unless that’s what she wants, of course. She may not be a fierce fighter like other girls on this list but she still takes shit from no one, knows what she wants, and doesn’t back down. Kanamori is definitely a girl to have on your team!

2. Shuka Karino from Darwin’s Game

At first glance, Shuka looks like a cute twin-tail loli, perfect for waifu status. She’s sweet and friendly and has an endearing smile. But as a top player in Darwin’s Game, you know she’s not some demure flower.

Shuka is a bit damaged so her reasons for playing were a bit skewed at first but she uses this to her advantage when fighting in Darwin’s Game. Her only weakness seems to be Kaname and that’s only because he’s the only one to ever beat her and because she likes the way he thinks. She respects him. Her infatuation, however, doesn’t take away that she readily cut off the hand of a guy who tried to touch her without her permission, killed the girl that tricked her into playing the game, and put Wang through the kind of torture he rightfully deserved without breaking a sweat. You go, girl!

1. Noi from Dorohedoro

“She’s a brick... house. She’s mighty mighty…” Noi is very tall and so muscular that it’s hard to tell her sex when she has her mask on. She has an innate magical power to heal herself and others which makes her practically invincible against physical attacks. On top of that, she’s as strong (or more so!) as Shin and can put down a gang of attackers easily. She’s so powerful, she was even approached by a devil who suggested she take the exam to become a devil herself! This training is what made her the big, strong, carefree woman she is today, though she sacrificed it all to save Shin’s life, and she doesn’t regret it at all.

Noi is also an incredible and reliable partner to Shin and has been for years, she’s loyal, caring, lighthearted (unless in mid-battle), and is absolutely stunning when she takes her mask off. In formal wear or her tracksuit, Noi is a woman to admire, but you don’t want to get on her bad side.

Final Thoughts

We’d like to give an honorable mention to Nikaido from Dorohedoro who is also an unstoppable badass. But, as we don’t really get to see this for most of the series, we gave the spot to our girl Noi. Likewise, Maple from BOFURI is pretty amazing, but the fact that she’s gotten to where she is by pure luck docked her points. Besides, we feel she’d be more at home on a waifu list. 😉 (Come back tomorrow for that list!)

So what do you think? Are you as smitten with these badass chicks as we are? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

An otaku as far as I can remember. I grew up playing video games, watching anime in Spanish in Mexico where I grew up, and then was a member of both anime clubs at UTEP for my entire university life when I moved to Texas. I love going to cons, I used to cosplay (always hoping to get back into it), and I got to live in Japan for 2 years and be an otaku there! It was literally a dream come true! Now back in the US, I love being a writer and editor for Honey’s. It’s a great chance to keep up with all the latest anime each season and up to date with all otaku news. And without our readers, that wouldn’t be possible so, thank you for being a part of our hive!!
