Black Clover Preview (No Spoilers)
Asta, a boy with no magic, and Yuno, a boy who receives a four-leaf clover Grimoire, have grown up together and now compete to become the Wizard King. Although Asta doesn’t have magic, he mysteriously receives a five-leaf black clover Grimoire which grants him a weapon that uses anti-magic. After years of physically training his body and finally receiving his own Grimoire, the two set off for the capital to begin their journey of becoming the Wizard King!
Yami Sukehiro Highlights (Spoilers Beyond This Point)
1. He’s the Captain of the Black Bulls.
Becoming a captain is no small feat. Yami has overcome a lot of adversity just to become a Magic Knight and he’s climbed his way up to the top. At the beginning of the series, the Black Bulls have negative stars. In fact, he hardly ever promotes anyone in the Black Bulls. Whether this is on purpose or not is unclear, but don’t assume that he doesn’t notice how hard his subordinates work.
As the captain, he’s there for them when they need him, but he also knows when to let his subordinates grow on their own by using “tough love” on them, often pushing them more than they realize. His most famous quote is, “Surpass your limits. Right here. Right now.” And they do, even Yami himself.
2. He’s Got a Cool Personality.
One of the best things about Yami is that while he’s typically a quiet person (aside from when he’s drinking and having fun), he’s quite a hot-head and blows up at people over the smallest things. It really adds to his character and the comedy that flows through the show. A recurring event is that Yami often goes to the bathroom, but there’s no toilet paper.
In addition to his hot head, he’s also got a sadistic streak. He makes Asta do a ton of chores after he just gets his arms restored and he’s not above teasing other captains or picking fights, like he does at the Star Awards Festival (episodes 67-70). Yami’s personality is rough, but it’s one of the things that makes us at Honey’s love him.
3. He’s Rough, Yet Handsome.
Speaking of reasons why Honey’s loves Yami, his looks definitely make the list. Yami’s not by any means a “pretty boy.” At only 28 years old, he actually looks his age, unlike others who are sixteen and look like they’re thirty. He’s got that rough, rugged look going for him. While his scowl may make him seem intimidating, that strong jawline of his with scruff on his cheeks makes him really stand out as one handsome dude. Not to mention those dark eyes and full head of jet black hair he sports. It really seems like his dark features match his namesake, as yami means “dark” or “darkness” in Japanese.
4. He’s a Secret Ladies Man.
We at Honey’s aren’t the only ones in love with Yami. Vanessa Enoteca, a member of the Black Bulls squad, is constantly flirting with him and asking him to go drink with her. While it seems to only be in good fun at first, towards the end of the Invasion of the Witches’ Forest arc (episodes 57-65), she starts to view him in a new light as viewers get to see how she and Yami first met.
During the Star Awards Festival, she sees Charlotte Roselei, the Blue Rose squad captain, as a rival of some sort and challenges her to some contests. Although Vanessa hasn’t realized what her feelings may mean, Charlotte has already realized her own feelings for Yami, though she tries to shove it down. Yami is (seemingly) utterly oblivious to the two women, but has said that he likes “strong women.”
5. He’s Powerful.
With his dark magic, incredible sword skills, and insane ability to keep getting better, Yami is easily one of the most powerful mages in Black Clover. His katana skills are masterful as he easily keeps up with Patolli, the leader of Eye of the Midnight Sun, although the actual battle ends in a draw (episode 35). Not only is he skillful, but he’s got crazy endurance, strength, and durability. Not to mention his ki, which allows him to read his opponents' attacks and counter them with ease.
His actual dark magic is nothing to sniff at either. Yami has mastered his dark magic, but just when he thinks he can’t get any better, he overcomes his limits. The best example of this is in the Temple Battle Royale arc (episodes 42-50) when Yami uses a new spell escape capture and cuts Vetto in half. Yami had thought that he couldn’t get any more powerful, but Asta and his other subordinates keep inspiring him to surpass his own limits.
The Black Bulls squad without Captain Yami isn’t the Black Bulls. He’s the glue that holds them together, the driving force that makes them surpass their limits, and the one they all look up to. We all want a handsome, powerful captain like Yami. If you think there’s another reason why Yami is boss that we at Honey’s have missed, be sure to let us know in the comments!
