6 Anime Like Conception [Recommendations]

You have got to love studio Gonzo, folks. When other video games fail to get a studio willing to adapt it, studio Gonzo rushes in and see the potential with that specific title. Conception—based off a JRPG series—wasn’t a well known game, but it did well enough to warrant a sequel and even had said sequel make it across the seas for a release in the west. While Conception isn’t doing that well in the minds of anime viewers—we can see some of the flaws here and there—it’s still an anime we are enjoying even if we’re not wowed by it. Though maybe you’re not enjoying Conception that much or you’re loving it so you need a similar series to watch that mirrors the action/fantasy/harem series. If that’s the case we have you covered lovely readers.

Welcome, everyone, to our 6 Anime Like Conception article. Down below, you will find six different anime series that we felt echo the themes and ideas seen in Conception and might be a good match for those who either love or hate Conception. Are you ready to enjoy some series like Conception? Then scroll down below to begin our list!

Similar Anime to Conception

1. Yuragi-sou no Yuuna-san (Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July, 2018 - September, 2018

Being different has always been hard for young Fuyuzora Kogarashi. Even at an early age, Kogarashi was able to see spirits and even interact with them. Thus, Kogarashi decided to learn how to control his abilities and can even fight against spirits that might want to harm him or possibly others! Unfortunately, this lifestyle has left Kogarashi homeless and poor, which leads him to board at a place called Yuragi Manor. Kogarashi will soon learn that his rent is cheap for a reason…inside his room lies a ghost that has so far scared off everyone who has lived there. Can Kogarashi deal with this supernatural threat who might not be as scary as everyone makes her out to be?

Starting off our list of 6 Anime Like Conception, we look at Yuragi-sou no Yuuna-san from studio Xebec. While Conception and Yuragi-sou no Yuuna-san might be quite different in terms of settings and themes, both shows have randomness at all time maximums. Yuragi-sou no Yuuna-san focuses on ghosts falling in love with humans and then you have Conception which deals with relationships being forced to create “star children” to fight off evil beings. If you’re someone who loves shows that ooze with originality in some form or another, you’re going to like Yuragi-sou no Yuuna-san. Plus, it has a ghost girl who is quite well endowed and we always love to see that in an anime series.

2. Akiba’s Trip The Animation

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: January, 2017 - March, 2017

Akihabara, the mecca for all things anime and otaku. Tamotsu, alongside his sister Niawaka, was enjoying another beautiful day in Akihabara until a sudden vampire attack endangers both of their lives. While fighting off these strange vampires—known as bugged ones—Tamotsu is injured fatally as he defends a young woman who also is fighting against the evil invaders. In order to stop Tamotsu from dying, the woman he protected—Matome—revives him with a kiss that gives him powers similar to the vampires they were just battling against. Now the two warriors must team up to stop the bugged ones from damaging Akihabara and ensure the otaku mecca is kept safe from those who wish to sully its beauty.

Akiba’s Trip The Animation is another studio Gonzo creation that is also based off a video game series of the same name. While Akiba’s Trip The Animation is quite different than the game it’s going off of, the two are still filled with laugh out loud moments and is just downright bizarre…but in a good way. We also think Conception fans might like Akiba’s Trip The Animation as both shows are quite heavy on ecchi and action alike. Akiba’s Trip The Animation didn’t get as much love as many of the shows that aired in 2017, but we loved what it offered and think fans of the game—or anime that like to reference other series—will get a kick out of it too.

3. Caligula

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April, 2018 - June, 2018

Like many others, Ritsu has been teleported into Mobius a world built by a sentient AI that wishes to allow those within to be freed from their pain in the real world. Anyone who enters Mobius will live out lives as students forced to keep repeating the same cycle of life over and over again to live a happier existence. Ritsu must join several others who wish to break free from Mobius but they will soon realize that leaving this world is a lot harder than entering.

For the third recommendation on our list, we look at yet another video game-based adaptation in the form of Caligula by studio Satelight. We won’t lie to you reader, Caligula is a strange series that might be even stranger than Conception. That being said, Caligula—like Conception—is chock full of cool action scenes and some truly unique animation that keeps things fresh. We won’t say Caligula is for everyone though. However, if you are truly into Conception you might want to get Caligula a few episode test to see if a new series you want to invest some time into.

We hear you readers out there. You were thinking, “we need more random anime for this list of 6 Anime Like Conception.” Well folks, you’re in luck as our next recommendation for the list is a show from 2007 called Seto no Hanayome or My Bride is a Mermaid. While Seto no Hanayome relies on less action than Conception, the two shows both are not shy using fanservice to lure in the viewer and contain some serious comedy when the need arises. Did we also mention that Seto no Hanayome is made by Gonzo just like Conception? With that in mind, you should know that Seto no Hanayome will be filled with that Gonzo randomness that you’ve probably already seen mentioned on this list several times.

Similar to Conception in many ways, we know fans of the genres we mentioned above will truly find a lot to love with Rosario to Vampire! Though we do recommend reading the manga after finishing the anime series as we think the two are quite different!

Jil is one of these adventurers and hopes to become a hero who will gain the so-called Blue Crystal Rod that exists high in the tower. Jil begins his journey up the tower but will realize that being a hero means sacrificing more than anyone else…

Wrapping up our 6 Anime Like Conception recommendation list, we look at one last video game adaptation called Druaga no Tou: The Aegis of Uruk. There are a few readers out there who probably have heard of Druaga no Tou: The Aegis of Uruk, but we also know it’s a bit of a hidden gem in the anime world. Druaga no Tou: The Aegis of Uruk is filled with tons of action, romance and drama that keep the series constantly entertaining and addicting from episode one to the end. Yes, Druaga no Tou: The Aegis of Uruk might be based off an old—and we mean old—video game, but it’s like Conception in the sense that it was an anime adaptation that we never expected but were glad it came to be. Just be ready for some surprises when watching Druaga no Tou: The Aegis of Uruk. There are some truly “whoa” moments that we didn’t expect and we’re sure many of you will understand when you dive into this series too.

Final Thoughts

Conception probably won’t win any anime awards—again, we understand why—but we appreciate the series and how studio Gonzo is dealing with this adaptation. Conception is a fun fantasy harem series and we really see some people enjoying it for what it offers.
