6 Anime Like Jingai-san no Yome [Recommendations]

The fall 2018 season has brought us a wide variety of amazing anime, but there is one show that stands out amongst the rest thanks to its zaniness. Jingai-san no Yome tells the story of a middle school boy who is chosen to be the wife of a strange creature named Kanenogi. With some very funny moments and a very wacky story, Jingai-san no Yome makes for one of the most unique anime of the season. While the show might not be for everybody, if you are a fan of comedies, this anime has so many great things for you to enjoy.

1. Miira no Kaikata (How to Keep a Mummy)

Over the years, Sora Kashiwagi has learned to take care of himself. With a workaholic aunt and an adventurer father, Sora spends his days either at school or at home taking care of the housework. After not hearing from his father for three months, Sora receives a mysterious coffin shaped package from him. The package opens itself revealing a tiny mummy. Although Sora is initially startled and reluctant to take care of the mummy, he finally gives in and decides to let it stay with him. Sora begins his new life alongside the mummy Mii-kun as he and his friends learn what it takes to live with a mummy.

Miira no Kaikata and Jingai-san no Yome are both very light-hearted comedies centered around the daily lives of humans and supernatural creatures. The anime start off very similar with the first episode being dedicated to the meeting of the human character and their new supernatural partner. After that, the anime begin throwing all kinds of heartwarming and comedic adventures your way. Outside of the comedy, the anime are also very similar visually with some soft and soothing colors that perfectly match the tone of the stories.

2. Gakuen Babysitters (School Babysitters)

  • Aired: January 2018 - March 2018

Tragedy strikes the life of Ryuuichi Kashima when his parents are killed in a plane crash. With his little brother being the only family he has left, Ryuuichi doesn't know how he will be able to make ends meet. While at his parents’ funeral, a woman named Youko Morinomiya approaches Ryuuichi and offers to take care of him and his brother. Youko is a chairman for an elite academy and in exchange for offering the brothers a place to stay, Ryuuichi must work as the school's babysitter. Ryuuichi agrees to the deal and his new life as a babysitter is about to begin.

Gakuen Babysitters captures the same light-hearted and easy going type of story that is seen in Jingai-san no Yome. Both anime feature some very laid back stories that focus on either making you laugh or feel good. Each episode is filled to the brim with some of these light-hearted moments, with only a few serious scenes sprinkled in infrequently. Gakuen Babysitter is also filled with some unconventional stories of love with one of them being the love between a boy and his brother while the other one is about the love between humans and supernatural creatures.


3. DRAMAtical Murder

  • Aired: July 2014 - September 2014

After Toue Inc. bought the island of Midorijima in Japan, they built a futuristic metropolis that now houses some of the wealthiest people in the world. The original inhabitants of the island were forced into an area called the Old Residential District. Aoba Seragaki enjoys his simple life in the Old Residential District where he lives together with his grandma, but one day he is forced into a match of a game called Rhyme. He finds himself entangled in a mystery. Midorijima gave birth to two games called Rib and Rhyme that involve the use of virtual reality to battle it out. Aoba learns at the conclusion of his Rhyme match that many Rib players have been going missing lately and he now must get to the bottom of what has been happening.

On the service, DRAMAtical Murder and Jingai-san no Yome wouldn't appear to have anything in common, but when you look deeper into both anime, they have many similarities. The main thing that both anime share is their use of BL and the way they go about it within their stories. While it isn't the main theme in either of the anime, it is still prevalent enough for fans of BL to enjoy. If you are looking for an anime that has the same low key type of BL like, but with a more serious story, DRAMAtical Murder is perfect for you.

4. Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon (Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid)

  • Aired: January 2017 - April 2017

On her way to work, Kobayashi runs into a big green dragon named Tooru sitting in front of her door. Apparently, Kobayashi had agreed to let the dragon stay with her while she was in a drunken stupor. Not wanting to go back on her promise, Kobayashi agrees to let Tooru stay with her; in exchange, Tooru has to work for her as a maid. Although things start out rough, Kobayashi and Tooru start to grow closer to one another. However, before Kobayashi is able to get to used to her new life living with a dragon maid, things get thrown for a loop when more dragons start appearing in the city.

Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon has all of the things you love about Jingai-san no Yome with even more things to enjoy. Both series involve a human and supernatural creature as they learn to live with one another. There are also some minor romantic elements that develop between the main characters that make up a good portion of each stories comedy. Both anime feature some very cute character designs and feature easygoing stories that allow you to enjoy without having to think about it. Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon and Jingai-san no Yome are both simple in style with only a few serious episodes, but they are both able to give you some fantastic comedy and some light-hearted stories that make them perfect shows for you to watch while you unwind.

5. Orenchi no Furo Jijou (Orefuro, Merman in my Tub)

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: October 2014 - December 2014

One day, while walking home from school, Tatsumi sees a man collapsed at the edge of the lake. Tatsumi runs to help the man, but he soon finds out that things were not quite what they seemed. The man turns out to be Wakasa, a merman who was trying to escape the polluted water. Unable to put him back in the water, Tatsumi decides to let Wakasa live at his apartment in the bathtub. Now with Wakasa and all sorts of aquatic life coming over to his apartment, Tatsumi's life is about to get a whole lot more chaotic.

Orenchi no Furo Jijou captures many of the elements of Jingai-san no Yome without the romantic subplot. The series tell similar stories of two completely different people living together and overcoming the hardships of living under the same roof. Once they get used to each other, the pairs start to form close bonds that make for some very heartwarming moments. With both anime, being shorts, they have a similar pacing and have fast-paced stories with plenty of comedy. With the short length and similar themes, Orenchi no Furo Jijou is one of the most similar anime to Jingai-san no Yome


6. Fukigen na Mononokean (Morose Mononokean)

  • Aired: June 2016 - September 2016

Although Hanae Ashiya was looking forward to starting high school nd making loads of friends, he has found himself stuck in the nurse's office for the entire first week of school. Hanae’s sickness started when a strange creature that nobody else could see latched onto him. With his sickness only growing worse, Hane is willing to do anything to get healthy, so he decides to visit an exorcist. After calling the exorcist, Hanae enters into a strange tea room known as the Mononoke by going through the doors to the nurse's office. The exorcist Haruitsuki Abeno helps remove the youkai from Hanae's body, but with Hanae unable to pay for his services, Abeno forces Hanae to work under him and help him solve the appearances of yokai.

If you want a show that features something similar to the deep connections formed between Tomoi and Kanegoi than Fukigen na Mononokean is perfect for you. Fukigen na Mononokean and Jingai-san no Yome both take place in colorful worlds that are filled with a variety of supernatural creatures. Hanae and Tomori both find themselves dragged into these worlds when they have chance encounters with one of the supernatural creatures. Jingai-san no Yome is mostly centered around Tomori and his relationship with Kanegoi, but Fukigen na Mononokean features a more episodic story that focuses on different yokai each episode instead of focusing on one relationship. Despite this difference, the stories still feel similar thanks to the relationships and deep connections being formed between Hanae and the various Yokai.
