6 Anime Like Kenja no Mago (Wise Man's Grandchild) [Recommendations]

We love Kenja no Mago, aka the anime with the overpowered reincarnated super mage. We like seeing just how powerful a programmer from another world became when he got ahold of another world’s magic and reverse engineered it for his own purposes. Seeing Shin Walford completely leave the entire cast with mouths agape is quite thrilling. But now we’re looking for other similar power fantasies, and we think these next 6 anime fit the bill. Here are 6 anime just like this season’s Kenja no Mago.

1. Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku (Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: January 2018 - March 2018

Game programmer Suzuki Ichirou passes out while working only to wake up as the character Satou inside the game he was just slaving away on. Not quite sure what’s going on, he begins to explore this new world and discovers it matches up with just about every one of his expectations. Using his understanding of the inner workings of the game, Satou aids many of the inhabitants while searching for clues as to how he got there and a way to go back.

Satou and Shin have a lot in common with their previous lives in the real world. They were both underappreciated and overworked, but now they’re using their skill sets to become incredibly powerful in their new worlds. We don’t see anything wrong with this strategy. If you have to be isekai’d you might as well profit from it.

2. Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni. (In Another World With My Smartphone)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2017 - September 2017

Killed by God on accident, Mochizuki Touya was reincarnated in another world, with his only request being to take his smartphone along with him. God also gives him a strong affinity to magic in order for him to cope with this new fantasy world, and thus, Touya explores it to his heart’s content. It isn’t long before people begin to realize that despite his claims of being a normal person, he’s nothing normal at all.

Touya might not necessarily be as skilled as Shin at using magic, but he is heavily overpowered. Only a few days in another world and he’s fighting hordes of monsters, slaying dragons and curing incurable diseases. The reactions he’s getting are very similar to those that Shin gets from those around him. Maybe they should text each other sometime.

3. Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime)

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: October 2018 - March 2019

After reincarnating, Mikami Satoru is now the slime lord Rimuru Tempest. He has all the strength of the ancient dragon he freed (well, ate) in the first cave he revived in, and has amassed a following of ogres, goblins, lizardmen, and dryads. He’s head honcho, and the world is quickly realizing they have a nation of monsters on their doorstep. Overpowered in every possible way, Rimuru isn’t a bad slime you know?

We love just how Rimuru goes from being an ordinary person to accepting his peaceful life as a slime, but it doesn’t last long. He’s getting stronger with each battle, and his followers see him more as a god than just a leader. We love overpowered protagonists like Rimuru and Shin in our anime!

4. Hyakuren no Haou to Seiyaku no Valkyria (The Master of Ragnarok & Blesser of Einherjar)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2018 - September 2018

After exploring an urban legend with his childhood friend, Suou Yuuto is transported to another world pulled directly out myth and lore. Alone in this new world, he is taken in by the Wolf Clan and quickly uses his knowledge to bring prosperity in agriculture and battle to their society. It isn’t long before they’re following his word as gospel and calling him ruler of the clan. Now Yuuto has a harem of women all vying for his affection, but he’s simply trying to win enough battles to find a way home to his childhood friend. Will he succeed?

While Yuuto isn’t overpowered physically or blessed with magic, his knowledge of history’s greatest military tactics makes him incredibly skilled at warfare. His opponents don’t know how to counter him, and his followers would march into hell on his orders. Both Yuuto and Shin have brought their worlds something they’ve never seen and are being revered for it.

5. Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records (Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 2017 - June 2017

Alzano Imperial Magic Academy has a new star instructor. He’s brash, arrogant, lazy, and apparently can’t beat his students in a magician’s duel. Glenn Radars might seem incompetent, but when sinister forces target his students Sistine and Rumia, he springs into action. Wielding a comprehension of magic that leaves his opponents caught off balance, what’s the secret to this lazy teacher’s skills, and where did he come from?

Both Kenja no Mago and Akashic Records are set in a prestigious magical academy. Shin and Glenn’s command of magic might be completely different, but they’re both standing out in different ways at their new schools. Although between one blowing parts of it up and the other gaining a perverted reputation we’re not sure which the students and faculty prefer.

6. Knight's & Magic

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2017 - September 2017

Ernesti Echevalier was a mecha otaku programmer in his previous life, but now he’s the young son of a Silhouette Knight pilot with a daring command of magic. These war machines are magical versions of the giant robots he loved back in Japan, and he’s deadset on piloting one ASAP. Studying day and night, he uses his deep understanding of programming to reverse engineer the magical syntax that governs everything in his new world, leaving his classmates and teachers speechless. His goal is right in front of him, he just needs to assemble his own mech!

Ernesti understands magic in the same way as Shin Walford, and they’re both able to bring their ideas from Japan into their new worlds by recreating things. Although he’s a bit younger, Ernesti and Shin both have been impressing people from a young age. By the time they’re finished, their new worlds will probably never be the same.

Final Thoughts

Well, there you have it. If you are going to reincarnate into another world, it’s best to be drastically overpowered after doing so. We’re kinda liking these stories that put protagonists at a serious advantage over the rest of their peers, how about you?
