Honey’s Highlights

bee-douche Gamers! - Summer 2017 Anime
School Romcom with a gaming element? Bee likes. Bee likes a lot.

Really Bee-kun? This is not ecchi. If anything, it is a lot like Shoujotachi wa Koya wo Mezasu or Saekano. Maybe even Genshiken!

Whaddaya talking about Honey-chan?! This is so clearly going to be just like Netoge no Yome wa Onnanoko Janai to Omottta? I am ready for the gratuitous fan service.

Wait... but... uhh... actually now that you say that, the only difference here is that Gamers! does not happen online it seems. Hmm...

Synopsis

“Would you follow me and join the gaming club?”

Having no standout characteristics other than the fact that he really likes video games, lonely NPC-esque gamer, Keita Amano is suddenly asked one day at school the above question by the head of gaming club. The beautiful club president is named Karen Tendou. From that moment on, Keita’s everyday does an about face, and he starts to spend his days with the beautiful girls of the gaming club as this love comedy begins…. or so he thought!?

Lonely, NPC-esque female gamer Chiaki Hoshimori is the same save for how she values video games. Next up is Tasuku Uehara who is the leader of his class and has a girlfriend, but secretly loves games and is unfortunately satisfied with his real life. Aguri is Tasuku’s girlfriend whose knowledge of games is nil. She is also sucked in where there are complete misunderstandings, spinning your wheels and coming up empty, as well as continuing to stray off course, complete with low self-esteem gamers. This surely different complicated youth romcom begins.

Three Episode Impression

Gamers! is an anime like Netoge no Yome wa Onnanoko ja Nao to Omotta? or Shoujo-Tachi wa Kouya wa Mezasu that seems to attempt to appeal to the gamers niche. The premise being about a boy, Keita, who just loves playing video games and has no real experience with girls or really...other people over all. Gamers! is a pretty OK anime that focuses more on humor than anything. By episode 3, I’m not exactly sure where Gamers! is headed since it went from Karen wanting to recruit people to her gaming club and winning prizes to her falling in love with Keita to Keita trying to make friends with a girl who also doesn’t like Karen’s gaming club. However, Gamers! does follow the progression of your normal gamer and his life as one. How he is pulled into a club but wants nothing to do with a general style of competitive gaming, enjoys arguing about the small nuances of gaming, and making friends in his own way. It can be quite relatable to gamers who just don’t fall under a generic umbrella term for the word “gamer”. Gamers! takes a different approach to the plot than most anime and perhaps that is what has viewers so enticed. They don’t know the general direction of where Gamers! is heading, but it’s less predictable and mundane that way because we all know how boring Shoujo-Tachi wa Kouya wa Mezasu could be. There’s no focus on the school club aspect here and they’re not going to randomly create a club of their own to play like Netoge. It’s just an anime where they game for fun.

Characters & Voice Actors List

Keita Amano

Voice Actor: Megumi Han

Keita is a second year high school student who’s hobby is gaming. From mobile games to console games, he loves them all greatly, but his actual ability is lacking. He has a tendency to be lonely in class.

Karen Tendou

Voice Actor: Hisako Kanemoto

Karen is an amazing high school student who has great looks and a great body, excellent grades, has a sharp mind, excels at sports, -not exactly the specs you would imagine a real-life girl having. At the academy, she is a beautiful girl who adored as an idol. Within the academy though, she has secretly set up a gaming club and works as its president.

Chiaki Hoshinomori

Voice Actor: Manaka Iwami

Chiaki is a second year student who is bad at speaking and enjoys playing games silently alone. Not only is she an excellent gamer, she also is currently working on her own open source video game. When it comes to Keita, it does not matter if they like the same game or not, since they value different things, they get along like cats and dogs.

Tasuku Uehara

Voice Actor: Toshiyuki Toyonaga

Tasuku is Keita’s classmate. He is akin to a class leader position in his class, he has a girlfriend, and it seems as if he is stereotypically satisfied with his life, but in reality, he also actually loves video games.

Aguri

Voice Actor: Rumi Ookubo

Aguri is Tasuku’s girlfriend. She looks and speaks like a gyaru, but in reality, she is innocent. Her one drawback is that she is a bit of an airhead and can come across as a bit of an idiot. Out of all of the members of the club, she is the one with the least knowledge (see: none) of games.
