Kanojo, Okarishimasu 2nd Season (Rent-a-Girlfriend 2nd Season) First Impressions!

Rent-a-Girlfriend returns with a second season this Summer based on the manga of the same name by author Reiji Miyajima. After a successful launch of the first season, many have been anticipating this release to see the continuation of Kazuya and Chizuru’s love story on the small screen, as well as the complications that come from a complex web of lies and half-truths.

Season two picks up a year after Kazuya and Chizuru first meet, the two still meet regularly through the rental girlfriend app despite Chizuru’s desire to quit to pursue her passion for acting. Kazuya endeavours to support Chizuru’s goal financially by renting her every week!

Blending Work and Pleasure

Chizuru’s focus in season two is pursuing her dream of becoming an actor, using the money from her job as a rental girlfriend to help pay for acting classes, and eventually getting a part in her first play. Kazuya attends, amazed at Chizuru’s talent to captivate the audience, believes she’ll be scouted by the director in attendance but is shocked by the other actress that is recruited.

In support of Chizuru’s dreams and pursuing the feelings he clearly has for her, Kazuya promises more rental dates in the hopes that his support can spur her on and they can spend more time together. The dynamic of worker and customer between our two main love interests is a rare relationship to see in a romance anime, which adds a level of complexity to the story of Rent-a-Girlfriend and the second season builds on this brilliantly. Kazuya’s ex-girlfriend, Mami, discovered the secret renting relationship with Chizuru at the end of the first season, and season two starts with her hunting around for more information about their relationship.

Three’s a Crowd, But Five’s a Party!

Since the start of Rent-a-Girlfriend in season one, Kazuya has gone from being dumped by Mami and seeming destined to be forever alone to starting season two with a fake rental girlfriend in Chizuru, a girl that actually wants to be his girlfriend in Ruka, and a jealous ex-girlfriend that can’t seem to leave him alone. Alongside this, Kazuya has had more screen time with Sumi Sakurasawa, Chizuru’s shy friend from season one, who goes on rental dates with Kazuya as practice meaning the story is set up for a five-way love pentagon that would fry anyone’s head!

The parallel between Kazuya’s love life in seasons one and two sets the character up for some form of considerable conflict further into this season, and we’re all kinds of excited to see silly situations befall our main character. But, of course, all bets are on for which powder keg will explode first, be it Mami discovering Kazuya’s true feelings for Chizuru, Ruka realising that she’s third wheeling on the main love interests, or if a new dynamic will blow the whole anime wide open.

Final Thoughts

Building on a popular first season, Rent-a-Girlfriend season two is continuing its story in a similar fashion to the original, meaning if you enjoyed Kazuya’s antics and the messy love pentagon developing the first time round, you will love it again with this Summer’s iteration.

We’re excited to see where Rent-a-Girlfriend goes with the new season as it continues this Summer season. So, what are your thoughts on Rent-a-Girlfriend Season 2 so far? Has it lived up to your expectations or fallen a bit flat? Let us know in the comments below!
