Reasons Kenma Kozume is the Most Relatable Character in Haikyuu!!: To the Top 2nd Season

Haikyuu!!: To the Top 2nd Season is already on full throttle, and it’s only getting better. As Karasuno battle their way through the finals, more and more awesome characters are getting introduced one after the other. We’ve met more volleyball geniuses like the Miya twins, as well as oddballs like Bokuto and Kita Shinsuke.

However, there’s this one character in Haikyuu!!: To the Top 2nd Season that we just can’t help but relate to as we watch his background story unfold. It’s Kenma Kozume. Okay, we get it. He’s not entirely a new character as he’s been with our guys in Karasuno since last season, but we’ve only related to him this hard recently. Here are the reasons.

Gamer to the Core

It’s no news that Kenma likes to play games. In fact, Hinata’s first meeting with him was while he’s deeply engrossed in his game. Still, we didn’t expect just to what lengths he’s willing to go to just to play videogames. Kuroo revealed that there was a time when Kenma used to wake up at ungodly hours just so he could play. That’s because he wasn’t allowed to stay up all night and play.

We here at Honey’s Anime also love playing games if you’re still not aware of that. However, Kenma’s love of games isn’t what made us relate to him. It’s his effort to make it work. We’re reminded of that time when… We’ll stop there. We don’t really want to embarrass ourselves. Nevertheless, we’re certain that we’re not the only ones who went through stupid lengths just to circle around technicalities!

Hates Doing Anything Tiresome

Another not-so-shocking news is that Kenma doesn’t like doing anything that will tire him. Just who likes doing tiresome things, right? If Haikyuu!! were real, Kenma is that dude we’d never guess is an athlete. Actually, he’s still probably holed up in his room if not for Kuroo, but that’s for another article. Kenma uses his intellect more than his physical prowess inside the court, which is also the reason he gained the moniker “Nekoma’s Brain.” His quick wits allow him to lure opponents to dance to his own rhythm and play with them as he pleases. As he puts it, he “doesn’t like working hard, but doesn’t mind leveling up.” That just became our new motto in life.

Hates Losing Even More

Grinding in games and grinding in real life are two completely different matters. Sheer want of leveling up doesn’t and can’t provide all the fuel to go through sports training. Fortunately for Kenma, he has two things: absolute hate for losing and Taketora Yamamoto, a.k.a Tora. Tora has always been Kenma’s friendly rival. He’s cheerful, puts 110% in everything he’s doing, and pretty gutsy. Basically, he’s Kenma’s polar opposite.

It goes without saying that the opposite ends of the magnet repel each other, but since it’s Haikyuu!! we’re talking about, everything always ends on a good note. At the end of the day, Kenma always finishes the quest (as he would probably want to refer to it) given to him.

We do, too. We’ll accomplish our assignments in time… or maybe with a bit of an extension.

Final Thoughts

With Haikyuu!!: To the Top 2nd Season’s wide array of characterst, it’s idiotic to assume that everyone will relate to a single character. Still, we believe that a lot, if not most people will easily relate to Kenma. His dashing sass and gleaming will to do what he wants aren’t really that uncommon. As mediocre as we make him out to be, it’s undeniable that he’s a strong general inside the court. That said, we’re excited to see more action -- or lack thereof -- from him.

Manga and anime were big parts of my childhood. I grew up watching Yu Yu Hakusho, Slam Dunk, One Piece, and Dragon Ball Z. Those were probably one of the happiest and most carefree days of my life. In fact, most of my values are probably molded by manga. No, that's not an exaggeration.
