Goodbye 2015 and hello 2016! Before we completely let go, let's look back at the best male characters out of all the seasons that aired in 2015. Instead of focusing on the cutest or sexiest guy, I want to go for the characters that actually meant something in the series. I'm kind of glad this year had many great male characters but not all of them made the cut. Im sure my selection of characters have already making a big fuzz in the internet and in Honey's Anime but i'm certain that some of my selections will take you by surprise. Here we go!

10. Zen Wistalia from Akagami no Shirayuki-hime
[Snow White with the Red Hair]

Zen Wistaria Akagami no Shirayuki-hime
akagami no shirayukihime-s2
  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2015 to September 2015

Zen is our knight in shining armour for 2015. He’s the second prince of Kingdom of Clarines and he has a cute first love going on with the red haired protagonist, Shirayuki. He’s a bit of a childish guy but definitely a reliable one. This sweet prince was swept by Shirayuki’s hair and kindness just like everyone else, but he’s the only stubborn guy to actually make a move on her; better yet, he’s the adorable jealous type. What girl wouldn’t become the bride of this promising prince? He also had the guts to kiss Shirayuki before the season ended; that made him have the cutest guilt trip i've seen in this year.

He ended up swearing love and loyalty to the girl on his knees!? That’s a classic proposal we surely don't see in anime often!

9. Daryun from Arslan Senki [The Heroic Legend of Arslan]

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: April 2015 to September 2015

Nobility and loyalty is Daryun’s theme. This skilled kight would risk all for the king and prince - fighting under Camp of Arslan. His dedication to Arslan and saving Pars is impeccable, he’s not only a warrior, but Arslan’s counselor. He is one of the coolest fighters in the series and probably the most badass looking. His near-death experience brought out the true power or Arslan. These two have a strong bond and friendship but Daryun’s commitment stands above all, making him Knight of the year!

8. Korosensei from Ansatsu Kyoushitsu [Assassination Classroom]

Assassination Classroom
  • Episodes: 22
  • Aired: January 2015 to June 2015

Korosensei is “male”, right? He’s worth nominating because of his popularity, good teaching skills, incredible defense and well… he’s a cool humanoid octopus dude. Putting aside he destroyed half of the Moon and is a top secret most wanted criminal, he’s a top notch teacher. He wants to destroy the world in one year, unless a bunch of kids from his homeroom class can kill him first.

Not much is said about Korosensei, we do get a glimpse of his past occasionally. We suspect that he wasn't always like this, but an accident involving him and another chick went terribly wrong, ending her life. This girl happened to be the homeroom teacher of the classroom he’s currently handling and that his motives to teach came from this girl’s death wish. Surely, teaching must remind him every second of that accident, but he still does the job flawlessly - the way Korosensei helps these children better their grades and their personal lives is almost heroic. I nominate him Teacher of the year!

7. Worick Arcangelo from Gangsta.

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2015 to September 2015

Can’t decide between calling him Badass of the Year or Best Friend of the Year. Worick works as a handyman for the company Benriya. He’s the kind of guy you’d think would love his handgun more than a person but that’s misleading due to his appearance. Tall, blonde and attractive with a pinch of mystery because of his eyepatch. Who wouldn't think he’s badass? He’s always smiling, positive and kind natured, buuuut… his door is closed shut from others. He comes from a wealthy family with an abusive past, therefore giving up his fortune and opting to becoming a gigolo to pay off his rent.

Behind his humor there’s always sarcasm, but other than that, he’s caring of his friends, especially Nicolas, his best friend and partner. He learned sign language to communicate with Nicholas and they even have the same tattoo; maybe he’s grateful Nicolas killed his whole family? Who knows. This anime thought outside of the box compared to others that aired in 2015. Action, blood and dirty jobs are maturely represented in this dark, gritty anime. Make sure to see Worick kicking some butt if you already haven't!

6. Momonga from Overlord

Ainz Ooal Goan (Momonga) overlord

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: July 2015 to September 2015

A Powerful wizard, leader, caring in nature and tall... skeleton? Ok, we know Momonga is a guy because of the voice and he once said he was a salaryman in real life. He’s playing an online game so we can only see his avatar (we don't see his “real” human form in this season). He’s the protagonist in Overlord, the only human playing the game, YGGDRASIL. Evil overlord and creator of a powerful guild and base named Great Tomb of Nazarick, Momonga doesn't want to accept the game he poured all his life and effort into is now shutting down forever. Like the generic Video Game genre, he can’t log out yada yada…

Momonga goes along with the whole deal of the game becoming his reality (his real life sucked anyway) so he doesn't even try to go back - he continues his role as an evil ruler. Lucky for him the NPCs can now feel emotions but there's a problem; the more emotions the NPCs feel, the less humanity we see in Momonga. Will he finally snap out of his role playing and think of a way out of the game in the next season? For me, the series and characters felt like something right out of Final Fantasy XI or that Final Fantasy XIV Version 1. Momonga did what many players do in the death of their favorite online game, therefore winning him Gamer of the year.

5. Yuu Otosaka from Charlotte

Yuu Otosaka Charlotte
Charlotte dvd
  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: July 2015 to September 2015

If you could become another person, what would you NOT do? Especially if you can become yourself again. Yuu can possess people for only 5 seconds but it’s more than enough to get him to the top in test results. To be fair, you would do the same. He uses his powers to his own benefit and lies excessively, winning him a very cocky attitude. What happens when other kids with powers find out and try to blackmail you to stop what you’re doing in order to save you from crazy scientists that will use you as a guinea pig? You’d have no choice but to say “No thanks”, right?

The people that want to “save” Yuu actually need him to get rid of their “cursed” powers. It happens to be that Yuu has a special ability that when he controls other people’s bodies he can also absorb their powers. Yuu’s character starts evolving throughout the series, he no longer controls people for his own gain but now he does it to help others only gaining empathy in return. Charlotte’s story turned Yuu from a prick, to a caring and loving young man. Check out the series and see what it can change in you!

4. Gouda Takeo from Ore Monogatari!! [My Love Story!!]

ore monogatari Takeo Gouda
ore monogatari
  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: April 2015 to September 2015

Takeo is our protagonist in the innocent love story of Ore Monogatari!!. Takeo had given up on his chances of ever finding love until a little ray of sunshine named Rinko, enlightened his path in life. He was cursed by the typical case of “judging a book by its cover” as his body is enormous and scary in the eyes of girls. His intimidating body was the total contrary of his true self, he’s a gentle guy that genuinely wants to help and protect everyone. He’s also clueless and a bit stupid, which is why his best friend Sunakawa is always there to help him.

Takeo finds his soulmate and would do anything for her. He over analyzes anything that has to do with Rinko because he truly loves her, but has a bit of trouble expressing it verbally. Suddenly, his universe orbits around this girl and changes his life to be a better guy for her. He gets a part-time job, studies to attend the same college as Rinko and most importantly, he loves her so much he was willing to give her up to a better suitor with a better future. This couple’s love is so bright it cuts right through all the obstacles. Takeo is without a doubt, boyfriend of the year.

3. Souma Yukihira from Shokugeki no Soma [Food Wars!]

Souma Yukihira Shokugeki no Soma
Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma dvd 2

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: April 2015 to September 2015

Everything Souma cooks looks exquisite and apparently, it's so delicious it gives people foodgasms. He’s only 15 years old but is already an incredibly talented chef only second to his father. His attitude is still similar to an immature teenager, bragging how his food is always the best (and so far he’s right). He likes to experiment with food, usually mixing ingredients that don't match; this is what actually makes him outshine from the others since he knows his ways around condiments. His lifetime experience working for the family restaurant is also a big plus but his father decided that wasn’t enough, that he needed competition and experience outside the restaurant, so he forcefully enrolled him in the Tootsuki Culinary Academy.

So far, Souma has struggled a little bit in school but he still hasn’t met his match, though his only weakness is not being in charge. He is persistent, religiously dedicated to cooking, and always has a trick under his sleeve to leave us at an awe. Souma’s cooking style is refreshing and unique, and is always being flexible while making food. He is so confident in his cooking, he isn't afraid to bet his career on it or turn down a challenge. Striving to defeat his father in cooking is the goal that keeps him going, but is this the only thing he needs to become the ultimate chef? WE DON’T KNOW because the series isn't over yet *sob*. Best cook of the year!

2. Morokuzu Takehito from Prison School

Morokuzu Takehito Prison School

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: July 2015 to September 2015

My kudos to whoever thought this guy should be in the list. He is the absolute best character in Prison School. Without him, the story wouldn't have developed. His nickname is Gakuto, and he attends the Hachimitsu Private Academy, where male applicants are now accepted into this once all girls school. The “gozaru” guy is the most intelligent of the five male protagonists and the one that stands out the most in character development. He plans all of the significative escapes from the prison and truly takes one for the team every time.

He cut his hair in order to make a wig for Kyoshi’s escape. He farts in a classroom full of hot babes and shits his pants only to record the sound that is going to be used in an escape plan. He pretends to be crazy to the point of mental illness, fooling even the spectators, and finally saves all the boys from their terminal expel with an unthinkable plan. Of Course, he also did this because Kyoshi promised him he’d get an ultra rare action figure of his beloved “Guan Yu” from the Three Kingdom’s history. Definitely mastermind of the year!

1. Saitama from One Punch Man

one punch man Saitama
  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: October 2015 to December 2015

I mean, if I don't place this guy in the number one position, not even God will forgive me. I feel sorry for all the anime that aired in 2015 that now walk in OPM’s shadow. We all have to admit this is one of THE best characters in anime. So simple yet, so satisfying. With only the first episode, Saitama and his series won the adoration of anime fans, he shook every otaku’s top anime list like a magnitude 10 earthquake - making him reach number one everywhere this year. The internet has an infestation of Saitama vs. Goku discussions, and when something compares to Goku, it’s a big deal. Is he the new generation’s equivalent to Goku? Personally, Saitama is my new husbando, sorry Goku, lol.

If you like anime, there’s no way you can skip this series; it’s now being edited into the commandments of the otaku bible. Trust me - you have to watch. So, Saitama is just an average guy that wanted to stop being a zero on the left and do something for his city. Z-City was full of crime and abuse; this is what made Saitama take up the position of Hero, first training his ass off (or hair, in this case).

Somehow, he now defeats everything with a single punch, heck, he can even stop rain with a single punch! (And, wait for the last episode, woah). Saitama is freaking hilarious, yet he still shows dull expressions. He’s envied/ hated by 90% of the population and yet he tries to become popular. He saves the lives of hundreds and doesn't brag about it. Hell, just give this guy an award for best everything of 2015 (just kidding, maybe just best hero of the century).

This is the end of the list. What do you guys think of the selections? I’m glad 2015 was a good year for guys in anime and I’m grateful there’s lots of memorable characters that are not your average Joe. This year was filled with characters I’m sure we’ll be seeing again very soon. Are you guys excited to see them again? Do you think 2016 will bring even better guys? Let me know in the comments!
