Oh, the adventure! If you are an otaku that wonders how things are in the other side of the fence, you probably devour this type of anime. The thrill of the new and of the unknown was an important part of some animes that surprised us in 2017. Let’s remember the best adventure anime of 2017 in this article!
10. Shoukoku no Altair
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: Jul 8, 2017 to Dec 23, 2017
We will start travelling to a reimagined Turkey. The Balt-Rhein Empire is more and more aggressive every day, while Turkey’s government (the Divan) is divided about how to respond. Shoukoku no Altair follows Tughril Mahmut, a young pasha who is in a quest for peace for the country. However, not even sure of who is an ally and who is an enemy, Mahmut will have to bring the best of his abilities in this chess game of politics.
If you like historical manga that has to do with war and politics, search no more! Shoukoku no Altair was originally a manga before becoming an anime show. With marvelous environments and powerful characters clouded in mystery, Mahmut’s story will keep your attention. The show also gets points for taking the point of view of as many interest groups as possible, distancing itself from a simple narrative of the good guys against bad guys.
9. Shingeki no Bahamut: Virgin Soul
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: Apr 8, 2017 to Sep 30, 2017
There is this legend that a great threat exists in this world in the shape of a dragon called Bahamut. Humans, gods and demons once worked together to defeat it. Nowadays everyone has prosperous lives. However, will peace last, especially if humans exploit demons for their selfish objectives?
Our protagonist is the bounty hunter Nina Drango, who despite wishing to have a happy life, will have to face the rage of demons. Although Nina also has a crush on Kaisar Lidfard, a knight with a nasty temper and a hidden conflict. The attractiveness of this anime is how humans, demons and gods fight between them but also try to live their lives to the fullest. Comedy, romance and a lot of action and adventure are packed neatly in this anime.
8. Kemono Friends
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jan 11, 2017 to Mar 29, 2017
Welcome to a very special park, where instead of normal animals, we can visit “Friends”. This Friends are humanoid animals who live and hide in all corners of the park. When our protagonist Serval finds a new type of Friend called Kaban, they start an adventure to try to find which type of Friend Kaban is. Will they ever find the answer? Watch Kemono Friends if you want to find out 🙂
If your thing is safaris, then you definitely have to watch Kemono Friends. Travelling through exotic locations, meeting other Friends in problems and celebrating friendship in general, this heart warming animation was an unusual surprise last year. Don’t worry, because not everything is beautiful in this paradise. Something dark and mysterious is lurking, getting more and more interesting as the show goes on.
7. Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2
- Episodes: 10
- Aired: Jan 12, 2017 to Mar 16, 2017
Perhaps our recommendations so far are a bit on the sweet side for you. Isn’t there something that is pure nonsense and entertainment? Well, the answer is yes. Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku is the sequel of an anime aired in 2016. The story follows a NEET called Kazuma, who one bad day is transported to a fantasy world and has to survive accompanied by a useless goddess.
In this second season, the Kazuma’s group will keep us entertained with their “adventures” surviving in a land populated by demons and the law. The randomness, the hilarant personalities of the protagonists and unexpected twists will keep you entertained. If your thing (again) is RPG and beautiful ladies, watch this anime. It will make you laugh and perhaps feel a bit fortunate that you are not Kazuma :p
6. Mahoujin Guruguru (Magical Circle)
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: Jul 11, 2017 to Dec 20, 2017
If you like RPGs like The Legend of Zelda but feel that things could be a little bit more comical, keep reading. In this imaginary world, a demon King will be set loose and a young boy called Nike is chosen to defeat him. The tribe that long ago sealed the demon only has one survivor, a witch named Kukuri who accompanies Nike. Together, they will meet friends and foes in their RPG like quest.
This anime is inspired by a 90s video game franchise, so you can imagine there are some good old tropes thrown here and there. Even the pixels feel nostalgic! However, the rhythm of the adventure is fast, funny and cute. The protagonists are among the most adorable couples we have found in the anime of last year! So don’t forget, this is the retro anime packed with adventure that you can’t miss out!
5. Little Witch Academia
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: Jan 9, 2017 to Jun 26, 2017
Atsuko Kagari has always wished to become a witch, just like her idol Shiny Chariot, who has disappeared mysteriously since some years ago. That is why she enters Luna Nova Academy. She will become friends with Lotte Yanson and Sucy Manbavaran, who will accompany in her adventures. However, Atsuko finds an item that belonged to Shiny Chariot! Will she ever be able to find out what happened to her?
If you love stories about magic, witches, Harry Potter and the like, this is the anime you have to watch. Little Witch Academia is an adaptation of a film released in 2012 by the same studio. If you like simple but powerful stories about being true to yourself while pursuing adventure, search no more! The magic of Atsuko and her friends will enchant you in Little With Academia!
4. Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Oct 6, 2017 to Dec 22, 2017
Advancing towards the most coveted places on our list of the best adventure anime of 2017, we enter into an apocalyptic world. Among what is left of the civilization, the only apparent surviving humans are two tiny girls. They are travelling on their motorbike, collecting as many useful pieces and as much food as they can. However, somewhere inside their hearts, they still hope there are other humans like themselves in the world…
Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou was one of the simplest yet most emotional animes of 2017. This anime also has a great landscape art. Chito and Yuuri’s contrastant personalities sometimes enter in conflict mood, but what really stands out is how they care for each other and do their best for the sake of companionship. The daily struggle of the girls and the joy of the little things of life will make your heart a bit warmer.
3. Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World (Kino’s Journey: The Beautiful World)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Oct 6, 2017 to Dec 22, 2017
The competition between traveling girls was strong last year. However, 15 year old Kino took the third place of our Top Ten with her wonder lust through several worlds. She is armed and has a sentient motorcycle called Hermes. They will travel and meet people, but only during a three days stop.
The first thing that strikes you when you see Kino no Tabi is how beautiful and simple the anime is. This is another slice of life focused in the characters, the scenery, and of course, in the protagonist. Kino might look fragile and uneventful, but she has her own issues and secrets, which are slowly revealed throughout her journeys. The narrative, the slow pace and the feelings… everything is masterfully combined to make your day a little bit relaxed but thoughtful at the same time. If this is not art, we don’t know what would be...
2. Houseki no Kuni (Land of the Lustrous)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Oct 7, 2017 to Dec 23, 2017
Welcome to the future of our Earth, where humanity has disappeared and several species have evolved instead. We have the Lunarians in the sky and the Gems in the land, fighting against each other. The story revolves around Phosphophyllite, the youngest of the Gems who is eager to fight. However, Kongou-sensei assigns them the task to create an encyclopedia instead.
The adventures of Phos and company are among the most beautiful and masterfully animated shows of the year. Nevertheless, what makes the core of this anime is the story. Part fairytale and part dystopia, we get more and more intrigued by this world and the true nature of the Gems. Moving, funny and full of action, you can’t miss Houseki no Kuni from your watchlist!
1. Made in Abyss
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: Jul 7, 2017 to Sep 29, 2017
As much as we are impressed with many of the anime that made it onto this best adventure anime of 2017 list, the winner had to be Made in Abyss. It is rare to find a series that has child-like characters where the protagonist is not an upbeat boy. Yes, we love them too, but it is refreshing to have Riko around, dreaming of becoming a great explorer just like her mother. When she discovers Reg and surmises that he might have come from the Abyss, the adventure truly begins!
What has not been said about Made in Abyss? Fantasy, adventure and mystery mix together to bring us one of the best animes not only of 2017, but from the latest years. Riko and Reg are unforgettable leads! The cute style also helps their adventures to stand out in Made in Abyss, of course 🙂
