Chinese animation isn’t too well known in the world of anime, yet. However, over the course of the last few years with shows like The King’s Avatar, Chinese anime is growing in popularity. Ku Pao Ying Xiong is an isekai focused story that while not perfect, has its strengths. The colorful art and comedic story make for a rather unique isekai world. Add to that the parkour element and Ku Pao Ying Xiong actually quite different than most isekai works. The series has ended yet so now your chance at catching up to this chibi tale.

Yuzuki was in Japan one moment and then the next, she wasn’t. For reasons unknown, Yuzuki is now in some strange world. Vampires, werewolves and mysterious beings will be just a few things our young Yuzuki will run into. Can Yuzuki find her way home or will she be taken by these various forces who want her hidden power that’s within her blood?

It’s not often that isekai stories are reverse harems like Sengoku Night Blood. Though that’s what makes Sengoku Night Blood so different. We love the action, animation and characters within Sengoku Night Blood and we know many of you might like it too. Now here’s hoping we get a sequel sometime soon. Otherwise we’ll never know who Yuzuki ends up with or if she ever finds her way home.

7. 18if

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: Jul, 2017-Sept, 2017

Dreams are meant to end, aren’t they? That’s what Haruto Tsukishiro thought, at least. However, for whatever reason Haruto can’t wake up from this strange world he’s in and learns that he’s not alone. Several girls have entered this dream world and have become corrupted individuals known as Witches. Now, Haruto must team up with a cat-like professor named Kanazaki as they try to awaken the Witches before their actions affect the real waking world. Haruto’s strange dream is about to become even stranger in 18if.

18if is an anime adaptation of a cell phone game that was released a few years back. However, 18if is quite different with a story that has our hero trapped in the dream world rather than being able to leave freely like in the cellphone game. Though this change of story actually adds a nice isekai theme to 18if and makes for a truly fun and unique twist on the different world concept. Instead of an actual world, Haruto is a dream world and that leads to some very funny, strange, nightmarish and quirky worlds that make each episode of 18if quite different from one another.

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni. delivers multiple genres on top of the isekai theme. Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni. at times acts as both a harem and fantasy show. Often, you’ll have magical battles with dragons and other fantasy-like beasts and you can also expect several cute girls with some minor fanservice. Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni. didn’t reinvent the wheel when it comes to isekai works. Yet, that didn’t mean we didn’t enjoy the story for what it delivered to us. If you need an isekai work with harem vibes and fantasy themes then you’ll want to watch Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni.

5. Isekai Shokudou (Restaurant to Another World)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jul, 2017-Sept, 2017

In Japan, there exists a building that lies near an office district. Here, a restaurant exists called Youshoku no Nekoya with a cat symbol etched onto the door. Most of the time, you can find office workers and salarymen eating here since its conception 50 years ago. Though every Saturday, this small café is closed and only opened for those from other worlds. Various people like elves, lizardmen and even dragons come to dine at the restaurant. No race is forbidden from eating at the café, as long as they can find the door in their worlds, they can dine in this mystical restaurant.

We’ve mentioned a lot of different isekai stories, but Isekai Shokudou takes the cake for being quite a different story then the rest. Unlike the other narratives, no one from Isekai Shokudou is trapped in a parallel world or died and been reincarnated in one. Instead, Isekai Shokudou tells the tale of various travelers that have found their quests in life leading to this mysterious restaurant. Watching Isekai Shokudou essentially gives you different isekai narratives all in one 12-episode anime. We highly recommend checking out Isekai Shokudou, if you need a break from the traditional isekai works. Speaking of unique isekai works, that brings us to our next choice for our Top 10 Best Isekai Anime for 2017 list.

4. Re:Creators

  • Episodes: 22
  • Aired: Apr, 2018-Sept, 2017

Throughout time, humanity has created countless numbers of various forms of literature. Video games, manga, books, light novels, and anime have all breed different characters with different tales to tell. Though have you ever wondered what would happen if mechs existed in our world or even magical girls? Young Souta Mizushino is about to find out when his normal life becomes flooded with various beings from different worlds. They brought with them their unique powers, Souta is about to witness a battle between different creations that threatens the lives of everyone in his world.

Now we know many of you out there are going to get kind of mad Re:Creators isn’t higher on our list. Trust us folks, we would have loved to put it higher, too. However, as great as this action focused story is, the isekai themes in Re:Creators are a stretch at times. While characters from different worlds do come to our world—think of a reverse isekai story—our main character is still in the real world. That’s why Re:Creators can’t be on our top 3 for our Top 10 Best Isekai Anime for 2017 list, but we can at least put it at number 4. Seriously though, go watch Re:Creators if you haven’t already. Amazing music and animation are just a few things to expect from this wickedly great show.

3. Knight’s & Magic

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: Jul, 2017-Sept, 2017

Once he was an otaku with a supreme love for all things mecha. Though when this otaku died, he found a new world awaiting him and a new body. Now known as Ernesti Echevarria, or Eru for short, the mecha otaku now lives in a world filled with actual mechs. Eru, luckily, also has quite the aptitude to use mechs and is already showing signs of being an excellent student at his school for those who wish to pilot them. Unfortunately, being quite short makes Eru’s piloting abilities come under question…

You know what there isn’t a lot of in isekai stories? Mechs, and that’s why we love Knight’s & Magic. Eru’s intense piloting skills made each episode he fought in fun to witness and served as a breath of fresh air for the isekai genre. Now we only have one more wish for Knight’s & Magic. We need a season 2 and we need it now!

2. Youjo Senki (The Saga of Tanya the Evil)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jan, 2017-Mar, 2017

A Japanese businessman one day fired his coworker and was then subsequently killed by him. As he was about to die, God intervened and asked if he believed of which the man said no. Thus, God decided to reincarnate the businessman into the body of a female called Tanya Degurechaff whose fate is to become a powerful military leader within an alternative world. Tanya will show her strength and cruelty as she leads her troops to numerous victories all while proving that God is nothing more than some supernatural being with powers.

Most isekai stories are fantasy like with nice and calm themes. Youjo Senki, however, throws all of that out the window. Focused on a magical based war, Youjo Senki is filled with drama and mature themes of violence and the horrors of war. While Tanya might be a scary character, we can say without a doubt in our minds that she makes for one truly unique isekai protagonist. If you need a break from the usual cliché isekai stories then you’re going to want to watch Youjo Senki.

1. Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2

  • Episodes: 10
  • Aired: Jan, 2017-Mar, 2017

Kazuma Satou has now been in this strange fantasy world for some time since his “selfless” death. However, this fantasy world hasn’t been the one Satou has hoped for. Satou’s team of women are so strange and annoying that he finds himself more in danger with each passing day. Though at least Satou can admit life in this strange world hasn’t been boring. Satou’s adventures continue in Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2.

Filled with laughs, fan service and tons of just overall what-the-heck moments, Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2 easily takes the top spot. We loved the first season of Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! and the second just adds upon the love we have for this series as a whole. Our entire cast returns with some new friends and enemies to spice up this already eccentric isekai comedy. While a season 3 of Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! might not occur, Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2 at least provided us with more laughter and even more Aqua, Darkness and Megumin then we could prepare for. If you haven’t seen either season 1 or 2 of Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! then you are missing out!
