Top 5 Waifus of 2020 – From Traditional Cuties to Skull-Crushing Sweethearts

2020 was a year that lacked many things, but at least we had an abundance of quality anime waifus to keep us smiling through the carnage. Some were cut from the traditional mold of adorable moe girls whose smiles must be protected at all costs, others were badass warriors who could kill a man with a well-placed glare, and there were even a few who perfectly combined aspects of both. Let’s reminisce together about our top 5 waifus of 2020!

5. Noi from Dorohedoro

Coming in at 6’10” and 273lbs of pure muscle, Noi might not be everyone’s idea of the perfect waifu... but to us, this carefree mafia cleaner is a blessing sent from the anime gods (or the anime devils, considering what series she’s from). Although Noi is a sorcerer with the rare ability to heal people and deeply cares about her teammates, she mostly spends her time gleefully murdering the En Family’s enemies with her bare hands alongside her best friend and work partner Shin. We particularly love when she wears formal outfits, since it shows off her mane of white hair and cheerful smile, but even in her blood-stained tracksuit and Hellraiser-esque mask, we still adore her.

4. Echidna from Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu 2nd Season (Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 2)

Instead of arguing over the merits of Emilia vs. Rem until the end of time, we’d like to humbly suggest a new Re:Zero girl to simp over – Echidna, the Witch of Greed. She’s a powerful spirit who oversees the Trials of the Sanctuary and has devious plans to use Subaru’s respawning ability for her own purposes, but she’s also a socially awkward dork who’s been sitting at a tea table for 400 years and gets flustered when visitors don’t regard her with adequate reverence. Her black-and-white-themed design is striking, with the small accent of iridescent green in her butterfly barrette and her characteristic smirk rounding out the look. We hope we get to see more of her in the future!

3. Ha Yuri Jahad from Kami no Tou (Tower of God)

Tower of God is chock full of outstanding waifus, from the sassy tsundere Endorsi to the focused lizard girl Anaak to the reformed thief Serena (Rachel, on the other hand, is the absolute worst and we’ll hear no argument otherwise). But standing atop them all, despite her tragically short screentime, is the incomparable Yuri. This nearly 6-foot tall Jahad princess has massive authority within the tower, controls two legendary swords, curb-stomps an opponent that gave the rest of the cast all kinds of trouble, and introduces herself to Bam by launching a flying kick straight into his face. She also has two devoted assistants to attend to her every whim... perhaps she’ll have some job openings soon?

2. Chizuru Ichinose from Kanojo, Okarishimasu (Rent-a-Girlfriend)

If you can get past the rampant incel-itude of Rent-a-Girlfriend’s protagonist Kazuya (which we realize is a pretty tall order), you’ll find that the main love interest Chizuru is actually a top-tier waifu worth worshipping. Not only is she effortlessly beautiful, but she also takes pride in her job as a rental girlfriend, carefully planning her dates down to the tiniest handhold so her customers can have an enjoyable experience. She doesn’t take kindly to people like Kazuya who trash her choice of occupation or see her as deceitful just because her bubbly “date persona” isn’t the same as her more down-to-earth and straightforward real self. Chizuru, we hope you find someone who respects you for who you are one day!

1. Tsukasa Yuzaki from Tonikaku Kawaii (TONIKAWA: Over the Moon For You)

Tsukasa is the sweet, kind, beautiful, and possibly immortal wife of Nasa Yuzaki, a boy she saved from a speeding truck and married once he turned 18 (it’s complicated). Despite barely knowing Nasa to start with, she clearly loves him and his uncomplicated earnestness pairs well with her snarkier and more worldly personality. She’s also a massive pop culture nerd, with some of her favorites being the original Street Fighter game and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Honestly, we could watch Tsukasa and Nasa be cute together all day long... and luckily, that’s pretty much exactly what Tonikaku Kawaii is! She may already have the perfect husband, but that doesn’t mean she can’t be our waifu in our hearts.

After the hard-hitting East Coast lifestyle hit me a bit too hard, I started pursuing my passion as a writer in my cozy home state of Ohio. Aside from that, I spend my time cooking, cosplaying, collecting anime merch, and being an improv comedy actor. I also love sneaking alliterations and stupid puns into my writing, so be on the lookout for them! 😉
