What is Romance Anime? [Definition; Meaning]

Romance is cliche and full of hopes and dreams that come out in a story involving love. It’s no wonder romance is a popular genre, especially for those who dream of a whirlwind romance in their future. There are only a few types of people who wish to forever be alone, but the amount that actually do, and mean it, are few compared to those who dream of having partners. That’s why romance stories really speak to people, who dream of something similar. They even speak to lonely housewives who want something a bit more exciting than their domestic lives. With that in mind, we want to explain more about the genre of romance so that you can enjoy it more! Please hang tight as we also explore a few romance anime that really dig into our love of romance.

It’s everywhere

Like the title says, romance is everywhere. It’s funny how you think that romance will be some lavascious beauty who steals your heart at a single glance, when in fact, it can exist right under your nose. Or maybe it could very well steal you away and make you forget reality. Essentially, it doesn’t always exist in the way you think it does. People’s lives aren’t as predictible as they’d like you to think. Yearbook polls don’t accurately depict the futures of students. As such, you shouldn’t expect to find romance in all the places people tell you it exists.

Tamako Love Story

  • Episodes: 1
  • Aired: April 2014

Kitashirakawa Tamako hasn’t really given any thought to aspirations, but now, she’s got to think of the future as high school life is almost up. At the same time, Tamako is going to have to do a baton performance. Meanwhile, Tamako’s long time rival and friend, Ooji Mochizou, is making plans to move to Tokyo, leaving Tamako behind, but he hasn’t had a chance to tell her his feelings. Will Mochizou get the courage to confess before he goes?

One such example of love being everywhere is in Tamako Love Story. In Tamako Market, it is quite evident that Mochizou has always loved Tamako; he had great difficulty straightforwardly expressing himself, and Tamako has never noticed. Tamako was always oblivious, but it starts coming to life in Tamako Love Story. This is one of those situations that shows us that childhood romances are not just a fairytale or pipe dream (although this is just an anime), but it exists right near us. Watching Tamako grow up and have to figure out her future is relatable on such a large note for many of us, but it’s her finding out her love story that gives us hope and excitement!

Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii (Wotakoi: Love is Hard for an Otaku)

  • Episodes: 11
  • Aired: April 2018 - June 2018

Old middle school friends are reunited as adults in the same company. Despite the time away from each other, they both still enjoy each other’s company as they can just relax and be otaku around each other. However, it may not be exactly the same as before. Will their relationship ever be anything more?

When Wotakoi first starts off, we don’t really think too much about the relationship between Narumi and Hirotaka since it feels very sudden when Hirotaka asks out Narumi. Heck, Hirotaka is rather aloof about his own feelings for many episodes. The couple often feel like two friends who enjoy hanging out and sharing their hobbies, however what really captures our heart about these two is watching as Hirotaka slowly reveals how he really feels about Narumi, even if it’s mostly only revealed to the audience and not the girl herself. It’s cute to see the small nuances of romantic feelings in Wotakoi, which are so few and far between, and so easily missed with all the silliness and otaku references. All the same, it’s such a good anime for a somewhat realistic portrayal of romance. It’s not all drama and big romantic gestures.

Love is Complicated

Well, speaking of drama, love does have a lot of it. Hopefully, your love life won’t be full of it, but it does happen. This is shown in anime as well, and you know that you just can’t get enough sometimes. Like Kdramas and Jdramas, you can be drawn to the complicated romances and lives of people. Why can’t these two characters just get together and be happy? It’s just a substance so addicting that of course, we understand why you need more of it in your romance anime.

Kimi no Na Wa. (Your Name.)

  • Episodes: 1
  • Aired: August 2016

Mitsuha Miyamizu is a country girl who wants to live in the city while Taki Tachibana has real aspirations that he works towards while juggling his responsibilities in his life in Tokyo. These two teens has such different lives, but that doesn’t stop them from being linked together as they start to switch bodies every few days.

Kimi no Na Wa. really plays with the idea of fate and these two star crossed lovers really start off rather strangely. However, as you watch, you realize just how much impact they have on each other’s lives. Taki’s life is changed with Mitsuha’s introduction in his life, and due to that, he does something so unimagineable, it sets off waves in Mitsuha’s life. Their complicated circumstances are what we are drawn to in the movie, but they make it to be the wonderful romance that it is. If you are dying to know what we mean, you just have to watch and find out.

Nagi no Asukara (A Lull in the Sea)

  • Aired: October 2013 - April 2014

Humans weren’t always land animals. In fact, there was a time when humans roamed the seas and were able to breathe underwater. However, at one point in the past, a few humans broke away from their deep sea roots and gave up their ability to breathe underwater in order to live on land. It’s been many years since then, but now a handful of friends who live in the sea will leave the water to go to a school on land because their own population are in decline.

Nagi no Asukara is one anime that really grips at you, especially in the romance department. The story does a good job laying a complicated love web that is made even more complicated by the circumstances that each of the kids have involving their being humans of the sea. Things are made even more complicated in the middle of the anime, right at about the start of the second cours. This is when the story takes a direction more towards romance than before and boy, is the story a good one.
