Dr. Stone Preview (No Spoilers)

3700 years after a mysterious light petrified every single human on Earth, a new stone world has emerged. Teen genius Senku reawakens in the changed world and vows to rebuild society using the power of science. Helping him along on his journey are his school friends Taiju and Yuzuriha, as well as an island full of villagers who grew up in the new Stone Age. Among them is Kohaku, a young warrior who quickly makes friends with Senku. It’s the dawn of the Kingdom of Science!

Kohaku Highlights (Spoilers Beyond This Point)

1. She is a Highly Capable Fighter

Despite being a beautiful young woman, Kohaku is one of the village’s strongest warriors. She uses stone knives, a lacquered shield, and her own martial arts skills to take down any opponent she comes across. She can even hold her own when fighting against depetrified people from the modern age! How can she pack so much strength into such a little body?

2. She Cares Deeply For Her Sister

Kohaku’s older sister Ruri, who serves as the village’s priestess, has been struck with an unknown disease for over 15 years. Every day, Kohaku diligently brings her a massive jug of water from the nearby hot springs to bathe in, and she repeatedly admonishes her father for treating Ruri like an invalid. She also tells Senku that she entered and won the tournament a few months ago that decided which man would marry her sister, just because she didn’t think any of the men were worthy.

3. She Hates Being Called a “Gorilla”

Kohaku may be strong, but she still values her femininity. She gets annoyed when people refer to her as a “lioness”, but quickly turns threatening when anyone dares to call her a “gorilla”. Chrome found that out the hard way when he said that he thinks of her as more of an animal than a pretty girl. Not a moment later, Kohaku stares him down with doom in her eyes and he pleads for mercy. Don’t mess with this lioness!

4. She’s Smarter Than She Looks

The village Kohaku comes from is so primitive that they think of soap bubbles and colored fire as sorcery, but Kohaku is still very intelligent in her own way. She can easily suss out people’s motives, such as her instant reading of Senku as an honest person when she first meets him, and she even figured out how to do multiplication on her own while hunting large schools of fish. Senku and Chrome have the scientific know-how, but she has street smarts.

5. She Works Well With Senku

Speaking of Senku, Kohaku was his first native ally in the new world. When he used pulleys to help lift a tree off of her, she recognized him as a smart and capable person who she’d like to work with. Of course, she phrased it as “falling for him”, which the strictly scientific Senku didn’t appreciate... But over time, they form a tight bond and implicitly trust each other with their lives. Even though they still bicker, it’s clear that they’re friends.

Final Thoughts

Kohaku is an excellent addition to the Dr. Stone cast, bringing with her a fiery personality and dangerously efficient fighting skills. We can’t wait to see what she gets up to next!
