Nisekoi is one of the better rom-coms. True to its genre, it offers a bit of romance and a bit of comedy here and there providing for the best light hearted romance anime. It does not send you on an emotional rollercoaster ride as this is balanced out by the comedy. The characters in Raku’s harem are also diverse and each character is highly developed such that you will find your waifu amongst one of them. If light-hearted romance that will keep you laughing and engaged to the story is your thing, check out our updated list for 6 anime like Nisekoi. If you want the old list, you can see it below. Here goes~

Similar Anime to Nisekoi

1. Ore Monogatari

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: Apr 2015 to Sep 2015

Gouda Takeo is not an average high school student. Extremely tall and muscular, he is often mistaken as being way older than his age. On a train one day, he rescues Yamato Rinko from a groper. Secretly though, he has romantic interests for her. It wasn’t long before they are able to confess to each other therefore starting one of the sweetest and cutest relationship ever. This is a high school romance anime focused on the two of them developing their relationship.

If you are a fan of high school, slice of life and rom-com, Ore Monogatari will not fail to please. Both animes are set in a high school setting, giving both a simple and easy to understand setting. Light hearted with a dash of humour, both animes are good for a relaxing time while watching. Unlike Nisekoi, the love in this case is requited. Ore Monogatari explores love with dating as the main subject. Every single episode is so sweet to the point that you might even get diabetes from this series! Simply put, Ore Monogatari is an almost equivalent scenario of what it will be if the love is returned in Nisekoi.

2. Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Oct 2012 to Dec 2012

Chuunibyou refers to the eighth grade syndrome. In common language, that just means someone who is still living in and acting in the past. For Yuuta Togashi, this is often the cause of many embarrassing memories. As much as he tries to live a normal life from then on, everything changed when he meets Rikka Takanashi – the self-proclaimed ‘Evil Eye’. Too bad for Yuuta, no matter how hard he tries to escape, his Dark Flame Master persona will always come back to haunt him. With Rikka constantly being the way that she is, how will he ever adapt to her or even try to change her?

Like Nisekoi, this is a tale of a developing relationship between high school students. The numerous scenes of daily lives activities and the interactions between the protagonists are almost reminiscent to our daily. The plot of Chuunibyou progresses linearly giving ample space for the development of the different characters. Although Chuunibyou features lesser female heroines than Nisekoi, it is still an anime that features group situations and different individuals who tick each other off for comedic errect. As a whole, Chuunibyou is a very cute show with many moe moments just like Nisekoi.

3. ToraDora

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: Oct 2008 to Mar 2009

Ryuuji Takasu is not as he appears. Gentle with a penchant for housework, his danpaku eyes gives him the impression of being a fierce delinquent. On the other side of this love story, Aisaka Taiga is a diminutive girl with a fiery hot temper. She is known as the ‘Palmtop Tiger’ due to her size. Both of them enter into a mutual relationship to pursue their crushes. Both of their crushes happen to be the latter’s’ best friends. With an unlikely alliance such as theirs, will they secure the attention of their respective crushes?

Both anime features a lot of comedy and drama. Like Nisekoi, the start of the relationship starts off unpleasantly with the male character often being abused by the heroine. Eventually, the proximity and the gentle and caring side of the male protagonist manage to win the heart of the female heroine. However, along the way, there are many obstacles amongst their common friends that prevent them from professing their love to the other such as their present feelings for their crushes. This often leads to situations in which the true feelings both parties are kept bottled within them. Despite all that, the efforts by their friends and their own care and concern for each other led them together eventually.

4. School Rumble

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: Oct 2004 to Mar 2005

Tenma Tsukamato is infatuated by Karasuma Ouji. Unbeknownst to her, she is also admired by another boy – Harima Kenji, a delinquent. As Kenji tries his best to confess his feelings for Tenma, so too does Tenma in her endeavours to grab the attention of Karasuma. This usually amounts to plenty of unnoticed declaration of love. Amidst the chaotic relationship, Tenma and Kenji still have to deal with school, their friends, activities as well rivalries. Will everyone finally get a partner in the end?

Nisekoi is well known for inserting a lot of filler episodes that prolongs the story. Often, while the characters are in pursuit of their crush, the episode usually cuts into a filler episode to develop on other aspects of the different characters like their personality. Further, School Rumble also features an extensive cast of different character. In this manner, School Rumble highly resembles Nisekoi as there are a lot of random moments. Highly energetic, full of zest and opportune comedic moments, School Rumble is a fantastic romance comedy show that is sure to make you laugh.

5. Boku wa Tomadachi ga Sukinai (Haganai)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Oct 2011 to Dec 2011

Literally, the title says I do not have many friends. Kodaka Hasegawa’s blond hair certainly makes him a central character of note… as a delinquent. Instead of finding more friends, many tend to shun away from him despite it being his natural hair colour. As he laments his predicament, his life was about to change upon the meeting of another loner, Yozora Mikazuki. Together, they create the Neighbour’s Club for the people who do not have many friends or those that are outcasts in their classes.

Awkward characters, random funny moments and love triangles. These are the defining characteristics that define both animes. Haganai borders more on being ecchi than Nisekoi. But other than that, the setting and character line-up of characters are almost similar with each character being uniquely funny in their own way. If you appreciate the high school setting filled with random moments that Nisekoi provides, definitely give Haganai a try as it gives Nisekoi a run for their money.

6. Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: Jan 7, 2010 to Apr 1, 2010

Akihisa Yoshii is a true airhead. He is the titular baka of the series. In the academy in which he studies in, different people with varying abilities are classed into different rooms. Obviously, he is categorised into the last class with the room facilities furnished with tatami mats and tables which are falling apart. Yet however, being the idealistic person that he is, he rallies the F class in an effort to secure the best classroom available. With his test scores however, he is going to need all the luck he can get…

Baka to Test is yet another harem comedy like show with the bonus of having more fanservice. However, it places less emphasis on the romance portion and instead accentuates on the comedy portion. You can’t go more than a minute without laughing! Eventually a love triangle does surface as well which only leads to more fan service. Baka to Test like Nisekoi has a very straightforward story that is easy to grasp with the capacity to make your day feel great. If you’re looking for an easy anime to brighten your long day, both of these animes is sure to put a smile on your face and leave you feeling refreshed!

Conclusion

Whether you liked the characters, the plot or the art style of Nisekoi, there is a wide selection of similar anime to watch. The series includes all the things we love about harem romcoms: the tsundere, the exaggerated comedy, and the suspense regarding which team the main character will choose in the end (but we’re all rooting for Chitoge, right?).

However, the beautiful animation and the addition of the Yakuza element makes this show stand out from the other predictable, often mediocre romcoms out there – Nisekoi is a romcom with a twist.

Check out this list for our selection of 6 anime like Nisekoi!

Similar Anime to Nisekoi / Similar Anime to Nisekoi: False Love

1. Rabu Hina (Love Hina)

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: April 2000 – September 2000

“When we grow up, let’s go to Tokyo U together, okay?”, a girl asks the male protagonist. As you might have already guessed, the storyline of Love Hina also revolves around a childhood promise, and also has the main character caught between several different girls – the classical harem premise.

Keitaro Urashima is far away from fulfilling his dream of entering Todai, and is kicked out of his house as a result of him repeatedly failing the university entry exam. Looking for a place to stay, he ends up as the manager of his grandmother’s old hotel, which has now been made into a girl’s dorm. Here he meets Naru Narusegawa, an archetypical tsundere characters, much like Chitoge in Nisekoi.

This anime was an enormous box-office success, with over one million DVDs sold. Some may claim that Nisekoi is nothing but a Love Hina-rip off; I remain journalistically objective and urge you to see for yourself, it’s a brilliant series worth watching.

2. Seto no Hanayome (My Bride is a Mermaid)

  • Episodes: 26
  • Aired: April 2007 – October 2007

While on a so far eventless vacation at his grandmothers house, our main character Nagasumi Michishio wakes up on the beach after being saved from drowning. He recalls seeing a mermaid pulling him up to the surface – was it a dream? More like a nightmare.

As he is discussing the incident with his grandmother, the girl in question pays him a visit: he was indeed saved by a mermaid called Seto Sun, the daughter of the terrifying head of the Seto Clan of the Seto Inland Fishkind Alliance – a mermaid Yakuza. As it turns out, according to mermaid law, if a mermaid exposes her identity to outsiders, the punishment is death. There is a loophole, however, if the person she has exposed her true self to agrees to marry her, no one has to do die.

Also a show that doesn’t take itself too seriously, Seto no Hanayome includes a forced relationship, a harem, and a wacky premise with a fair share of funny scenes. If romcoms, yakuza and mermaids are your jam, make sure to check out Seto no Hanayome.

3. Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: January 2011 – April 2011

While Madoka’s storyline may be completely different from that of Nisekoi, it was also directed by Akiyuki Shinbo from Shaft, meaning that the animation is a delight to the eye. In case you haven’t already seen it, be sure to do so ASAP; it received widespread acclaim for its dark, twisted storyline, strong character design and original art style.

If you were impressed by the stunning visuals of Nisekoi but want a deeper plot, Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica is definetly going to leave you satisfied. The animation is truly psychedelic, the take on the magical girl genre is groundbreaking, and it also features good character: This is a modern classic.

4. Bakemonogatari

  • Episodes: 15
  • Aired: July 2009 – June 2010

Another title by Akiyuki Shinbo & Shaft, Bakemonogatari has a slightly more serious tone, and a plot with significant supernatural elements. High school student Koyomi Araragi has survived a vampire attack, and is about to be dragged into a world of various strange beings.

The show was praised for its originality – the parodical approach helps the anime transcend it’s romcom/mystery premise. “I guess my character is what people call “tsundere”, right?”, Hitagi Senjogahara says in an example of the show’s self-referential humour.

Claiming that her harsh remarks are made by transmuting 40g of copper, 25g of zinc, 5g of hiding her embarrassment and 97kg, this quick-witted character is reason enough to be watching Bakemonogatari. It also has interesting animation sequences with (seemingly) random flashes of words and pictures, reminiscent of Neon Genesis Evangelion. And, of course, vampires.

5. Baka to Test to Shoukanju (Baka and Test)

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: January 2010 – April 2010

The high school-themed Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu is another hilarious harem comedy produced by the animation studio Silver Link, a newcomer with links to Shaft (the director of the majority of its series is Shin Onuma, a former colleague of Akiyuki Shinbo).

Akihisa Yoshii’s school has introduces a meritocratic system where students are divided into classes based on their test results. As his academic performance is sub-par to say the least, he is placed in the bottom F-class, which has the worst facilities in the whole school.

This time the twist is that the students of each class can summon their own avatars (Summoned beings), in order to challenge other classes to a battle – the winning team gets the classroom and facilities of the loosing team. As one of the school’s sharpest minds, Mizuki Himeji, is placed in the F-class after fainting on the placement exam, the class gets an opportunity to take on the higher-level students.

Akihisa is, of course, immediately enchanted with the talented but frail Mizuki, but she’s not the only romantic interest in his class, and a love triangle eventually emerges.

For more or less brainless fun, Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu delivers the goods.

6. Toradora!

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: October 2008 – March 2009

Ryuuji Takasu is in his second year of high school, he is not particularly popular with the opposite gender, and is, for some undisclosed reason, feared by both the pupils and the teachers – it may have something to do with him resembling his father.

He comes into contact with (yet another) a tsundere character, Taiga Aisaka, described as the school’s “most dangerous animal”. After a bad start, they develop a strange relationship due to the fact they both have a crush on someone else, and decides to help each other out. Or, rather than cooperating, Ryuuji promises to do everything he can to help Taiga, “like a dog”.

The comedy of Toradora! is less pronounced, instead opting for a character-driven plot. The narrative unfolds at a leisurely pace, creating a sense of mystery that makes you want to keep on watching. The characters backstories are not immediately revealed, and the story is told in a more non-linear manner, utilising slice of life-techniques and voice-overs.

Toradora! is often included in all-time favourite anime lists on various blogs, and received good reviews from critics. This show clearly inspired Nisekoi, do yourself a favour and check it out!
