To be honest, I was slightly skeptical about this until I enjoyed the first episode. This show is cute, has decent characters, and so far is so cute it hurts. Ore Monogatari is a rom-com (romantic comedy) with just a dab of slice of life. The slice of life genre comes from the face that it’s not all centered at school or at home.
Ore monogatari also looks at a protagonist, Gouda, who has self-esteem issues (a common issue in Japan and for teenagers everywhere). He’s hopelessly tortured and teased his whole school life because he is different looking (another common theme in Japan). One day he meets Yamato Rinko and suddenly his life changes. Supporting who he thinks she is after for romance, he sets up his best friend Makoto and Rinko as best as he can, but many Rinko isn’t in it for his super cool best friend after all? Everything seems to be getting better for Gouda when he saves Rinko from a falling metal beam by catching it right before it crushes her.
Ore Monogatari quite heavy on comedy, usually due to Gouda being a bit slow on the pickup, or Makoto setting up Gouda. At least, that is how the series has been playing out.
I tried my best to find six anime that really stood out in my mind when I saw this. These are the six that I found. If I could spam you with gifs, I would while I wrote this. But!!! This is not a review article. (Look forward to one though if I get the chance to write one!)
Similar Anime to Ore Monogatari!! / Similar Anime to My Love Story!!
1. Kimi ni Todoke (From me to You)
- Episodes: 38 + 1 movie (live action)
- Aired: Oct 2009 – Mar 2011
First let me start out with one reaction. YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! Within the first couple of minutes of watching Ore Monogatari, All I could think of was Kimi ni todoke, but with the gender roles reversed! Kimi ni Todoke is a romantic comedy and a similar slice of life anime just like Ore Monogatari!
Sawako is a sweet and shy girl, but she has problems voicing anything properly. She looks a bit dark, and so people refer to her as Sadako from The Ring. She even has crazy rumors surrounding her that she can see ghosts and can place curses on people! However, she’s really sweet and just wants to be friends with people. After befriending the tough girl Ayane and tomboy Chizuru, they find out that she’s got a major crush on a boy, Kazehaya, in their class.
However, she’s not alone as basically everyone in the school likes Kazehaya! One day he starts talking to her and introducing her to people. However, can she get over her shy and hilariously awkward personality flaws to get Kazehaya to notice her? And maybe she can even confess her feelings for him? Check it out to find out!

2. Toradora!
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: Oct 2008 – March 2009
One phrase: “Bros before hoes.” AMIRITE Bro-Ami? Toradora is a classic. It’s like Hayate no Gotoku; you cannot ever find a reason to dislike it! Toradora is another romantic comedy with a little bit more emphasis on the comedy aspect. Which is why I feel it compliments Ore Monogatari well!
Toradora follows Ryuji Takasu who is actually a nice, average 17 year old boy. His face however, makes him look like a delinquent and therefore people are a bit scared of him. This leads to funny misunderstandings. One the first day of school he’s placed in the same class as his best friend Yusaku Kitamura and his crush Minori Kunieda. Things are looking up for him! Nope. He runs into Taiga Aisaka who is probably the most volitale girl you’ll ever see. True to her tsundere roots, she instantly hates Ryuji and decides to protect her best friend Minori.
Taiga is rich but lives alone due to family issues. As both have crushes on each other’s best friends, they work together to help each other achieve their romance goals… well kind of… Taiga exploits Ryuji to make him her slave leading to really funny instances. But is working together something that leads to something else? Check it out to find out what happens next!

3. Accel World
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: April 2012 – Sept 2012
Next we are taking a bit of a step away from the shoujo genre to bring you some action, because who doesn’t enjoy a good action anime? Not to mention, too much shoujo can get a bit dry, so let’s change it up! Now this anime does have a good romance plotline as well and the whole setup of an awkward male protagonist versus a cute female similar to Ore Monogatari.
Accel world starts with chubby Haru Arita who is bullied in school which, surprise, leads to slow self-esteem. So he unhealthily buries his feeling in an online game of squash versus himself. He grabs the attention though of Kuroyukihime (Black snow princess) who is the Vice-present of the student council. She introduces him to Brain Burst, which is a popular game that seems to speed up the human thinking process to the point that time seems to stop.
Haru learns that this isn’t a game, but rather something that affects actual reality. He can win points to buy acceleration points for use in the real world! So as they team up and assemble allied, they aim for the highest level in the game and to meet the game creator. But is working together having side effects a la Toradora? Watch below and see!

4. Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: July 2014 – September 2014
Now let’s return to that friendly, shoujo, cute, adorable, romance and comedy route. Gekkan tends to fit the bill for this show. It’s a romantic comedy through and through. Similar to Ore Monogatari in that it also has the misunderstood protagonist, it’s great!
Chiyo Sakura is a young, high school girl who finally gets the nerves to confess to her crush Umetaro Nozaki. When she does, he’s confused and his knee jerk reaction is to give her an autograph. Perplexed, she says that she wants to be with him. Agreeing, he invites her over to his house… Yea we all know where this is going. Psyche!
She shows up at his place, and he asks for her help with some drawings??? He’s actually a very famous shoujo manga artist!! They work together on his manga titled, “Let’s fall in love...” However, is that all that ends up happening? You’ll just have to watch to find out if Nozaki-kun does finish his manga, and if Chiyo gets what she wants!

5. Ao Haru Ride (Blue Spring Ride)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: July 2014 – Sept 2014
Slightly more dramatic, but still comedic in nature and a romance. I think that Ao Haru Ride belongs on this list too! The gender roles are reversed in this show compared to Ore Monogatari, but somehow the personalities are the same…
Futaba Yoshioka is too much of everything. In middle school she was hated by her fellow female classmates because she was too cute and too lady like which lead to all the boys being obsessed with her. One would argue that this isn’t a bad thing for her… However she messed up and never actually confessed to her crush Kou Tanaka! Then he moved away! Skip ahead to high school and now she wants a fresh start. It’s time to be as disgusting and unladylike as possible in order to be liked. (I mean really… wat /logic) She actually happens to be quite happy in her new… “lifestyle choice.”
Only problem is now Kou is back with a swapped name. Now he’s Kou Mabuchi and he has a bad attitude. He says that he liked Yoshioka in middle school too, but now… she’s not looking too attractive. Oops. Well score one for the “Yoshioka-is-a-genius club.” What should she do? Drop this fake persona and go again for Kou? Or stay with her “friends” who like her for her fake persona? Check it out and see what happens next!

6. Isshuukan Friends (One Week Friends)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: April 2014 – June 2014
This one is similar to Ore Monogatari in that is has a loner protagonist but is still a comedy and romance. This show though… how do I put this mildly… this show has such a “wat” factor that I put it on this list. Read on and find out why!
Kaori Fujimiya has no friends. No one really seems to notice her which sounds super exciting for the viewer! Not! One day though, she’s noticed by her classmate Yuuki Hakase and he tries to befriend her. They’re start to become friends for about a week and then suddenly as of Monday she has no memory of anyone. No idea why…. However, every single Monday she loses all memories connected to friendship. What about daily life? What about her family? Studying? Yea? No? WHY does she only forget about friendship? You’ll just need to watch this one and see what happens!
Isshukan Friends Fanmade Trailer (It’s really good!)
There you have it! 6 anime similar to Ore Monogatari!! I’m going to be honest, this was hard mainly because only 3 episodes aired when writing this article. Also, there’s a slew of great manga that would be perfect to be paired with this show if they were anime… However, they haven’t been made into anime! Yet… So I really hope you like the shows I chose! If I had to make a recommendation of where to start, it has to be Kimi ni Todoke because yaaaaaas, why not? (deathdrop.gif)
What do you think? Is there a show you’d put on the list? Let me know in the comments!
