What?!?!?1 I thought this was going to be like 91 Days or Gangsta with lots of action, drama and more.

Oh, there will be action and drama. The more will be the intense silent homoeroticism of the characters after a brush with death. I hope that this is the next Yuri!!! on ICE!

Synopsis

New York.

Ash. He has extraordinarily good looks and excellent combat abilities. He manages a street gang and once poorly killed a man. When that man was dying, he uttered the mysterious phrase ‘Banana Fish’.

At the same time, a Japanese boy who has come to New York to collect data as a cameraman’s assistant. His name is Eiji Okumura and he meets Ash.

They then chase after the mystery of ‘Banana Fish’ together.

Three Episode Impression

As someone who rarely watches shounen ai anime, I didn’t quite know what to expect out of Banana Fish, but oh boy, does it remind me of shoujo anime from the 90s. This is an anime that has actual substance, which doesn’t seem to exist anymore in the shoujo realm. Yes, it’s boy love, but it’s done so wonderfully as each character has had to deal with different difficulties in their lives. Aslan was raped and taken advantage of by the people who took him in, and this really seems to affect how he feels about certain people, especially Skip who he really tries to protect. Then Eijiro has this whole innocent vibe going for him, which we think helps add to his awakening to boy love as his feelings for Aslan seem to cross between intrigue, adoration, and affection. Not to mention the darker aspects that are discussed like child pornography, gangs, killing, and drugs. This makes this anime probably one of my tops for the season. It’s just got so much substance
