[Comedy Winter 2019] Like Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san (Teasing Master Takagi-san)? Watch This!

Romance is a great many things. If Teasing Master Takagi-san is anything to go by, it can also be pretty hilarious. Shin-Ei Animation's anime centers around two classmates, Takagi and Nishikata, who engage in daily battles to crown one of them as the master teaser. Unfortunately for Nishikata, Takagi knows everything there is to know about her rival. More importantly, she seems to enjoy spending time with Nishikata, even if their interactions almost always devolve to the boy blushing as a result of one of Takagi's pranks. Appreciated Teasing Master Takagi-san's blend of humor and romance? These current anime are worth checking out!

Like Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san (Teasing Master Takagi-san)? Watch Ueno-san wa Bukiyou (How Clumsy You Are, Miss Ueno)

  • Episodes: 11+
  • Aired: January 2019 – Ongoing

How clumsy you are, Miss Ueno explores the meaning of love. Or, to be more exact, the female protagonist is fascinated with the concept of romance. Highly intelligent and a capable inventor, Ueno dedicates all her time and resources to crafting impressive but silly gadgets in order to impress Tanaka, a younger member of her Science Club. At one point, Ueno attempts to convince Tanaka to drink her urine. Lesprit's anime is not above getting weird!

Major Similarities Between Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san (Teasing Master Takagi-san) and Ueno-san wa Bukiyou (How Clumsy You Are, Miss Ueno)

1. Reversal

Basically, Ueno-san wa Bukiyou is the direct opposite of Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san. Takagi and Nishikata's teasing contests help further the couple's relationship; in other words, the comedy is in service of the romance. When it comes to Ueno-san wa Bukiyou, Ueno elects to use a more direct approach to express her interest in Tanaka. Well-intentioned as her inventions may be, Ueno's plans invariably push Tanaka away. Romance is merely a tool to produce another hilarious sight gag or unfortunate misunderstanding.

2. No Room for Subtlety

Compared to 99% of harem protagonists, Nishikata comes across as quite perceptive. If compared to any normal metric, Nishikata is rather dense when it comes to matters of the heart. Well, Tanaka wears obliviousness as a badge of honor! Ueno could literally dress up as a heart and Tanaka would still fail to pick up on the girl's subtle hints. Ueno-san wa Bukiyou explores considerably stranger situations than Teasing Master Takagi-san, and there would not be much of a story if Tanaka was even remotely observant.

Liked Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san (Teasing Master Takagi-san)? Watch Watashi ni Tenshi ga Maiorita! (Wataten! An Angel Flew Down to Me)

  • Episodes: 11+
  • Aired: January 2019 – Ongoing

Miyako Hoshino is an unassuming and clumsy college student who, at long last, experiences the thrill of falling in love. Unfortunately, the protagonist's person of interest happens to be Hana Shirosaki, an elementary school student and a close friend of Miyako's sister. Undeterred by the age difference, Miyako manages to befriend Hana, leading to many awkward but endearing adventures featuring a college student and a number of fifth graders. No need to call the cops, Doga Kobo's anime is surprisingly wholesome!

Major Similarities Between Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san (Teasing Master Takagi-san) and Watashi ni Tenshi ga Maiorita! (Wataten! An Angel Flew Down to Me)

1. A Battle of Wits

Hana is not quite operating at the same level as Teasing Master Takagi-san's eponymous expert, but the elementary student constantly succeeds in pushing Miyako's buttons. With romance obviously off the cards, Hana's interactions with the college student are primarily driven by the young girl's stomach. In exchange for snacks, Hanna puts up with Miyako's clumsy and unintentionally inappropriate behavior. Despite towering over the rest of the cast, the nervous Miyako is definitely Wataten! An Angel Flew Down to Me's Nishikata.

2. Liquid Goodness

Teasing Master Takagi-san's animation is visceral, dynamic, and calming. Shin-Ei Animation's vibrant color scheme adds an element of playfulness to Takagi and Nishikata's interactions. With shows like Yuru Yuri and New Game!, Doga Kobo perfected an animation style well suited for this type of series. While not the most detailed anime of the season, Wataten! is a feast for the eyes! Both anime utilize art styles designed to facilitate for a soothing viewing experience.

3. A Sweet Comedy

While not devoid of laugh-out-loud moments, Teasing Master Takagi-san's humor is quite harmless. Takagi's teasing is born out of a place of affection rather than jealousy or anger, and Nishikata tends to instigate most of the encounters. Consequently, the pair's sweeter moments feel earned and resonate on an emotional level. Despite the premise, Wataten! resists the urge to depend on shock comedy to elicit a laugh. Doga Kobo allows a lot of room for the characters and relationships to grow.

Final Thoughts

Who doesn’t love to laugh? Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san expertly toes the line between silly and sweet. Like Shin-Ei Animation's series, our recommended two anime believe romance is inherently funny!
