[Goblins Goblins Goblins! Fall 2018] Like Overlord? Watch This!

Overlord is centered on a fantasy world set in a shut-down video game, which ended up continuing with the great wizard Momonga at its head. With a combination of funny moments and plenty of dark action scenes, Overlord never stops entertaining! If you’re looking for another anime that has plenty of fantasy creatures and humor, we have a couple more suggestions for you. These anime all have equally interesting protagonists and great mythical settings, but most of all, they are all series that we love to watch!

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: October 2018 – currently airing

A young adventuring party finds themselves set upon by goblins. But they quickly are saved by a man known as the Goblin Slayer, a high-rank adventurer. Though he may not look like much, he is stronger than he seems! Of course, he seeks the extermination of goblins above all else, only taking quests and going about his life with that in mind. Will his single-minded path lead him to an even darker place than the goblins he is hunting?

Major Similarities Between Overlord and Goblin Slayer

1. Fantasy World Overrun with Monsters

The worlds of Overlord and Goblin Slayer are both similar in their fantasy settings. Both are dangerous places full of monsters that prey on humanity, causing a need for adventurers and warriors. These are worlds of magic and myth, both worlds that are in need of the respective main characters to come hunt down the threats!

2. Powerful, Mysterious Main Character

Each of these anime focuses on a male protagonist who is strong, and a great asset to his world. Both of these characters also have their own mysteries, spending most of their time in strange masks and armor so that viewers continue to question what they look like. However, these characters still have their own quirks, gradually revealing a bit more of their personalities as the anime series continue on.

3. Scenes of Disturbing and Violent Nature

The violence and gore in both of these anime is unlike many in the same genre, giving the two series a more serious nature overall. These disturbing moments in both shows may turn some viewers away, but for others it is a realistic change to the genre, despite the dark atmosphere. After all, without true despair and fear, it would be difficult for our heroes to shine as much as they do!

Liked Overlord? Tensei Shitara Slime datta Ken (Watch That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime)!

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: October 2018 – currently airing

After he is killed by a passing robber, Satoru Mikami does not die normally; he is reborn in another world as a slime! Though he is confused by this turn of events, our protagonist soon begins to like his new form, invincible as he is to a great many dangers of the new realm. He finds he is able to learn quickly as well, absorbing attributes and strengths from the different things he intakes. As he meets strange creatures and makes new friends along the way, the newly named “Rimuru Tempest” gains quite a following thanks to his powerful abilities. With his new life still just beginning, great adventures are sure to follow!

Major Similarities Between Overlord and Overlord? Tensei Shitara Slime datta Ken (Watch That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime)

1. Action And Fantasy Meet Humor

Though Overlord can be darker in many parts due to the violence and gore, both Rimuru and Momonga have small moments of humor in their adventures that keep us laughing! A good part of these scenes are thanks to the other characters that our protagonists find along the way. Without these vibrant supporting characters, as well as our lead characters being able to strike a balance between action and humor, we would not find these anime nearly as entertaining as they are!

2. Main Character Thrust In A Brand-New World As Something Else

If you enjoy the isekai aspect of Overlord, Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken follows along with the same sort of premise. Both Momonga and Rimuru were regular humans in their former world, though they lacked a normal life in some ways. In their new fantasy settings, the two protagonists become entirely different creatures, thanks in part to strange fantasy game-like mechanics.

Final Thoughts

Not all fantasy anime can be as exciting as the ones on our list, as they all bring something unique to the genre and make us genuinely look forward to watching the next episode! With both Goblin Slayer and Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken as great options for anime to watch this season, we hope you’ll find them both to be just as entertaining as Overlord.
