Kyokou Suiri (In/Spectre) Introduction and Story
In a world where yokai exist, they come together through a young girl named Kotoko Iwanaga. Kotoko is the bridge and peacekeeper between the spirits and the humans, but even she has her own unique set of worldly problems. She seeks a romantic relationship with Kurou Sakuragawa who is cursed with unique abilities from consuming two yokai when he was younger. The two form an unlikely relationship that blossoms from the problems of the yokai world. The duo is uniquely suited for this type of work when they come across the yokai of a late celebrity brought back to life through Kurou’s cousin’s actions. Kotoko and Kurou must defeat the murderous yokai and bring peace back to their world while maintaining their relationship in the process.
1. The Mystery
The mysteries that present themselves in Kyokou Suiri are fascinating because this anime builds a whole world around the yokai. While yokai are unique and stem from old legends in Japan, Kyokou Suiri is able to combine these elements to create an interesting and unique plot.
2. The Protagonist
Kotoko Iwanaga is a character that immediately draws the viewer in. She is technically handicapped due to her missing an eye and a leg but she does not let this slow her down. She is a powerful and intelligent leading lady but still has the normal human issues of romantic crushes making her quite relatable.
3. The Pacing
The pacing of this anime overall was inconsistent. They rushed certain aspects, such as the explaining of Kurou’s cousin being behind Steel Lady Nanase and then focused too long on others. There were also many scenes in the hotel that felt inconsequential and if they had been taken out, nothing would have been confusing to the viewer or made the plot turn out differently.
1. Kurou Sakuragawa
Kurou’s character falls flat despite being so important to the plot. He never seems truly invested in Kotoko and their relationship but he also has moved on from his past girlfriend. His character is extremely frustrating to watch despite having such an interesting backstory. The creators could have done so much more with him but he is just plain boring when he enters the scene.
2. Steel Lady Nanase
Steel Lady Nanase is the antagonist for the majority of the anime but the episodes start to feel rather repetitive after she is introduced. This character is one dimensional and it doesn’t feel like she should have taken up as many episodes as she did. The creators could have introduced more antagonists to keep Kyokou Suiri moving at a more interesting pace.

Final Thoughts
Kyokou Suiri was an anime with a great concept but the execution could have been better. If you are looking for an interesting mystery anime, then you should definitely check this one out but it would definitely not go down as one of our best anime of the year. Kyokou Suiri gives us lots to work with for a season 2, though, so let’s hope that season 2 will be all that season 1 could have been.
