2. Hachigatsu no Cinderella Nine

  • Genres: Sports, Slice of Life
  • Air Date: April 8, 2019

Tsubasa Arihara has just entered Rigahama Public High School and has just learned that this school doesn’t have a baseball team. So, she goes and founds an all-girl, regulation baseball club.

The ones that gather are girls who have never even touched a baseball, girls who played once, but gave up, and girls who continue to climb higher…

This all-girl baseball club is all over the place as sometimes girls clash, sometimes they compete, and sometimes they help each other up.

The hottest summer of the world is starting...

What We Got:

Tsubasa loves the game of baseball. Unfortunately, the school she is attending doesn't have a team, and thus she decides to start one of her own, together with her best friend and two newbies to the world of baseball, Akane Ukita and Yuki Nozaki. As Tsubasa starts to build up a team, they set their sights on getting to compete at the highest level.

Hachigatsu no Cinderella Nine tries to do a little bit of everything and tackle several genres and story ideas at once, leaving us slightly disappointed in the overall outcome. The anime gave us a story that was less about baseball and more about what the game of baseball meant to its characters. As Tsubasa brought her team together piece by piece, we got to see a wide variety of emotional stories all focused on the game of baseball. All of the girls had their own reasons for why they wanted to join the team, and getting to learn about each one of them was a real treat.

With one student down, Bocchi turns to the rest of the class as she slowly befriends them one by one.

Few anime genres have been done more than moe slice of life shows. We’ve seen it done time and time again, but Hitoribocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu is how you do a moe slice of life right. This show blew our expectations out of the water and proved to be one of the best slice of life anime of the season. With stellar characters and loads of comedy, the anime captured the essence of slice of life anime perfectly. The story was heartwarming, but at times could also be serious and make you cry. Every episode brought us more hilarious situations with Boochi and her friends.

The second season is about what we expected it to be; it didn’t do anything too crazy and was just a nice little series to watch when you had a few spare minutes.

5. Joshi Kausei

  • Genres: Slice of Life, Comedy
  • Air Date: April 9, 2019

This is a story of silent high school girls who are adorable even if they do not speak! Centered around the tragic yet beautiful Momoko, this anime is about the lives of three high school girls and includes the cool, glasses character, Shibumi, and the iyashikei, chibi, Mayumi. This silly, comical daily life of these girls is about having fun alone or together with each other.

What We Got:

Joshi Kasuei is a story about a group of girls who go about their daily lives without ever uttering a word. This anime is all about making you laugh while focusing on the lives of Mayumi, Momoka, and Shibumi. The comedy comes in all different styles and they throw in some fan service here and there. To be honest, we couldn't help but be a little disappointed thanks to the way silence was used throughout the series and the hit or miss comedy. Just give it a go and see if it fits your taste!

6. MIX: MEISEI STORY

  • Genres: Sports
  • Air Date: April 6, 2019

The stage is Meisei Academy from Touch.

Thirty years after the story of Touch’s main character, Tatsuya Uesugi, the door opens again on the story of these two fateful brothers…

Souichirou Tachibana and Touma Tachibana are two boys with the same birthday who happen to have become twin (?) brothers due to their parents remarrying. The two are second-year middle school students who attend Meisei Academy’s middle school.

Souichirou is a catcher and a batter. Touma is a third baseman for some specific reason, however he’s actually an excellent pitcher but has decided to conceal this. Then, there is Souichirou’s blood-sister and Touma’s step-sister, Otomi Tachibana. She has just entered into middle school and the two boys have become even more lively.

Now that the two are getting ready for high school, will they be able to set foot on the pitcher’s mound at Koushien...?

What We Got:

Toma and Soichiro Tachibana are a pair of stepbrothers who find themselves fighting to surpass the legacy of those that came before them. Thirty years before they attended Meisei High School, Tatsuya and Kazuya Uesugi won the school their only National High School Baseball Championship. Toma and Soichiro are a talented pitcher and catcher duo that make an instant impact on the team despite being first years. Together with the rest of the Meisei High School baseball team, the boys begin their long journey to becoming Koshien champions.

If you took the other two baseball anime of the Spring 2019 season and mixed them together, the result would be MIX. This is a much more interesting show than we expected it to be, combining exciting baseball action with a fantastic drama, a story about a pair of stepbrothers trying to make the most of their talents while still enjoying their youth. Not only does MIX an excellent job at providing us with some great baseball matches, but the way it also develops its characters and their relationships with one another is fun to watch. There is so much to love about MIX that we're already excited to see what happens throughout the rest of the series!

7. Senryu Shoujo

  • Genres: Slice of Life, Comedy, Shounen
  • Air Date: April 6, 2019

Her name is Nanako Shirayuki. She says everything she wants to say in a 5-7-5 senryu (human haiku).
Eiji Busushima is a boy who looks scary but is kind and a member of the literature club.
With just 17 syllables, their daily lives are spun together full of constant joy.

What We Got:

Nanako Yukishiro is just like every other ordinary high school girl, except for the fact that she is only able to communicate through senryuu. As she enters high school, Nanako decides to join the Literature Club at her school along with a former delinquent named Eiji Busujima. From there, the pair meet all sorts of fun and interesting people as they go about their daily lives.

Going into the series we thought this was just going to be a cute little story we might enjoy, but we got way more than we thought we were going to! Out of all of the slice of life anime of the season, Senryuu Shoujo may have had the best set of characters. The story of Nanako and Eiji is incredibly cute, and getting to watch them grow closer together throughout the series just melts your heart. We loved how every character had such a unique quirk and how it was utilized throughout the series. Although there isn't any meaningful story, we still enjoyed seeing what new adventure Nanako and Eiji would go on each episode.

8. Sewayaki Kitsune no Senko-san

  • Genres: Slice of Life, Supernatural, Comedy
  • Air Date: April 10, 2019

Nakano is a company employee who spends his days going between his company that exploits him and his home. That’s when Senko-san, a fox deity pushes her way into his house. She may appear to be a little girl, but she’s actually 800 years old. She cooks, cleans, offers ‘special services’ (?) and generally takes care of Nakano to help him release his stress. This is where their special situation begins.

What We Got:

Sewayaki Kitsune no Senko-san tells the story of a rundown salaryman named Nakano, whose life gets turned upside down when a fox god named Senko shows up at his home to take care of him. After seeing how much he struggled with being overworked, Senko is sent down to take care of all his needs. With some love, care, and a few hot meals, Nakano slowly starts to recover from being overworked.

This may have been the biggest surprise of Spring. Sewayaki Kitsune no Senko-san was not only one of the best slice of life anime of the season, but it may have just been one of the best anime of the year. There is just so many things about Sewayaki Kitsune no Senko-san that warmed our hearts. This show doesn’t do anything new or different from a typical slice of life anime, but it still managed to set itself apart as one of the best in the genre thanks to its characters and story. It did a good job at creating a story that was easy to digest and made you feel good along the way.

In an alternate universe, a group of alien invaders known as the Neuroi arrive on Earth. With regular humans unable to stop them, they turn to witches to stop the invasion. Combined with a special machine called a Striker Unit, the Strike Witches protect the planet no matter the cost. Witches: 501 Butai Hasshin Shimasu! follows the comedic hijinks of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing, as they go about their daily lives.

Strike Witches: 501 Butai Hasshin Shimasu! is all about the comedy. We were interested in seeing how the girls from Strike Witches would look in a more comedy focused anime, and we weren't disappointed! With only a 13 minute run time, each episode was full of cute characters and funny moments. This anime didn't do anything spectacular to separate itself from other titles in the genre, but it was still nice to see our favorite girls from Strike Witches in a new light.

10. Yatogame-chan Kansatsu Nikki

  • Genres: Comedy, Slice of Life
  • Air Date: April 4, 2019

The first person Kaito Jin, a transfer student who has just arrived in Nagoya from Tokyo, meets is a girl named Monaka Yatogame. Monaka speaks with a thick Nagoya-ben accent. Resembling a cat and openly speaking in Nagoya-ben, she doesn’t even embrace him or anything. While observing this adorable girl named Yatogame, she makes Katio head all over Nagoya, learning about it.

What We Got:

Kaito Jin is a second year of high school student who moved to Aichi from Tokyo. There, he joins the photography club at his school and meets Monaka Yatogame, a girl with a heavy Nagoya dialect. Through his interactions with Monaka, Kaito learns all about Nagoya and everything it has to offer.

This was one of the anime that really caughts us off guard with just how good it was. Yatogame-chan Kansatsu Nikki is one long commercial for Nagoya, of course, but this show still finds a nice balance between the comedy and the Nagoya info to keep you entertained. All in all, we really enjoyed learning about Nagoya while watching a comedy featuring a bunch of cute characters.
