The Best Comedy Anime of Spring 2021

Now that we’re starting off the summer season, it’s time for us to look back on the season that’s just past and talk about which shows deserve more attention, which ones did incredibly well and which ones completely missed the mark! This time, we’re going to be looking at the anime that had us dying of laughter with various hijinks, ridiculous jokes and even more ridiculous characters! Here’s the top 5 comedy anime of the spring season of 2021!

5. Mairimashita Iruma-kun! (Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun!) Season 2

A seemingly underrated series, Mairimashita Iruma-kun! (Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun!) has the various makings of an interesting shounen anime aimed at teenagers and preteens. It delivers a quirky premise, with the protagonist’s useless parents selling him off to a demon because they wanted money (Hayate, is that you?) and ending up becoming the only human being at a school of vicious, voracious, human-eating demons! The humour of the series comes from how nothing is ever really that serious in this show, from the horrific sale of Iruma to the demon Sullivan, to Amy Kiriwo’s plan to destroy the entire school in the first season, nothing is ever complete without a couple of gags and jokes in between!

4. Sentouin, Hakenshimasu! (Combatants Will Be Dispatched!)

This hilarious anime follows an operative of the Kisaragi Corporation, an evil entity that seeks to conquer the whole universe! Combatant 6-5’s has an incredibly important mission that could change the fate of the very world – he must infiltrate the Kingdom of Grace. However, 6-5 wrongly considers himself a superb fighter! What he doesn’t realize is that his companion, the android Kisaragi Alice, was assigned to him by Kisaragi Corp to ensure that this mission is successful, creating various hilarious instances of 6-5 biting off a lot more than he can chew and having to deal with being a double agent for Kisaragi Corporation and the Kingdom of Grace! His arrogance, expressions and the uke-seme routine that he and Alice develop almost instantaneously create a ridiculous feel, perfect for someone not looking to think about things too much and just laugh!

3. Shakunetsu Kabaddi (Burning Kabaddi)

Shakunetsu Kabaddi is another alternative anime about a sport that quite frankly, sounds like a great time! The point is for a runner to tag all opposing team players without getting tackled themselves. We’ve had anime for all kinds of sport, but this ancient Indian sport is getting an anime for the first time. The comedy comes from how ridiculous this sport can appear to someone seeing it for the first time, and with the amount of dramatic effect that goes into sport anime in general, Shakunetsu Kabaddi is a hidden gem not only for comedy, but sports anime too!

2. Tensura Nikki: Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken (The Slime Diaries: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime)

After the dazzling second season of Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime), this spin-off series is the slice of life component that the main series didn’t have the time for but had enough of! With the edge of the original series taken off a little, The Slime Diaries focus on developing the lore and characters we’ve fallen in love with, but with less fighting and more laughter from the perspectives of more than just our favorite slime!

1. Ijiranaide Nagatoro-san! (Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro!)

Ijiranaide Nagatoro-san! (Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro!) is the show everybody didn’t know they would love! The premise of a sadist pairing up with a masochist isn’t particularly new to anime, but the titular character Nagatoro Hayase is one of the few times the sadodere character archetype has been depicted. Quite frankly, Nagatoro Hayase is one of the most interesting characters from this season, and her incessant teasing, tugging and pushing of her senpai didn’t seem like it would be anything all that good. It’s better than good, and the various supporting characters around the main pair create even more chaotic energy and humour than Nagatoro herself! This show is a great time and it never tries to be anything more than what it promised, but somehow, it’s turning out to be the best comedy out this season, and even one of the best romance titles we’re getting this year!

Final Thoughts

Everybody loves a good laugh, and that’s what each of these shows does really well, if anything! This season paled in comparison to the winter season, but some of the new shows did incredibly well, turning out to be much better than we thought they’d be (we’re looking at you, Nagatoro!). I’m South African, harbouring an obsession for anything remotely related to Japan, mostly anime, of course. I draw sometimes. Some people call me Naledi, it’s my real name, or something like that. People think I’m stoic because I don’t smile often (I do sometimes). I like languages. Hoshi-kun and Naledi are the same side of the same coin.
