10. Akuma to Dolce

  • Mangaka: Suzuki, Julietta
  • Genres: Comedy, Demons, Romance, Shoujo
  • Volumes: 2
  • Published: April 2005 - August 2008

Mayuri considers herself to be a loner in school, but has a strong passion for cooking and magic which had been taught to her by her mother. As a form of practice with her magic, Mayuri summons a demon familiar to help assist her in her daily chores and cooking routines. As she’s baking she accidentally spills a load of tea on her skirt, and somehow summons a powerful demon named Beaut, who grants her any wish she desires. Mayuri wishes that the stain on her skirt would disappear in exchange for some sweets. Totally appalled by her decision he tries to sway her out of it, but is distracted by the aroma of sweets which is his ultimate achilles heel. Now with Beaut under her command, Mayuri intends to use him for all that he’s worth.

Nothing feels better than to somehow summon a random high level demon after spilling tea all over yourself. Not only that, but now you get to tell it what to do because it simply can’t resist the savoriness of the sweets which Mayuri bakes. It’s so funny watching the two bicker back and forth as they try to develop a better relationship, but it’s also heartwarming knowing that Mayuri no longer feels alone and that her life is actually full of wonderful people. While these demons aren’t out to kill her, it creates a nice balance between human and non-human interaction which serves up a sweet little treat full of entertainment.

9. Black Bird

  • Mangaka: Sakurakouji, Kanoko
  • Genres: Action, Comedy, Demons, Drama, Fantasy, Mystery, Romance, Shoujo
  • Volumes: 18
  • Published: July 2006 - December 2012

Misao Harada has the ability to see and interact with the mythical and magical world, but deep down she truly has no interest in any of it and would rather just avoid it all together. All she cares about is living out her life as a normal young girl in high school, in hopes that she can find a relationship to be in. What she doesn’t realize is that she’s actually the bride of a demon, and that her blood contains incredible powers while her flesh is imbued with immortality. Now the entire demon realm is chasing after her so that they can walk down the altar in marriage, and if she doesn’t comply her life may be on the line.

Black Bird is a romantic tale of a young woman who finds herself deep in the heart of the demon realm, and must somehow deal with all of these handsome demons chasing her down for love. One of those demons is Kyou, who shows great devotion to Mayuri and will do anything to protect her from anyone who intends to harm their relationship. Demon clans along with the Senka Maiden try their hardest to break the bond between them, but Kyou makes an effort to ensure that nothing could stand between them. As mushy as it sounds, the story is very compelling as you’re drawn into their fairy tale love story between a demon and a young girl yearning for love.

8. Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist

  • Mangaka: Takadono, Madoka
  • Genres: Comedy, Demons, Fantasy, Historical, Josei, Mystery, School Life
  • Volumes: 12
  • Published: October 2009 - Present

William has been blessed with an abundance of wealth and intelligence, and attends a prestigious school. His uncle owns a business but unfortunately one day all of it comes crashing down, and his uncle loses everything leaving the Twining family with empty pockets. As William scoured through his home looking for things to sell, he stumbles across a room he’d never encountered before and notices that there’s a magical seal. Unknowingly he summons a demon known as Dantalion, who informs him that he now has absolute power in selecting the next king of the demon world. Now William is in for a handful as every candidate is after him to seek after the position.

There’s so much to learn from in this manga as it deals with various different topics such as biblical and historical references, which all provide a great amount of information. It looks at angels and demons and how many of us seem to depict them as good or evil, but in fact there’s no such distinction. Everything is subjective and in this manga the devil, or demon lord, is in fact a calm and endearing being, while the archangel is seen as cruel and violent brat. The entire story is unfiltered for the reader to truly dive deep into, while William tries to piece everything together in comedic fashion as heaven and hell continue to fight against each other.

7. Sengoku Youko

  • Mangaka: Mizukami, Satoshi
  • Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Demons, Drama, Romance, Shounen
  • Volumes: 17
  • Published: December 2007 - May 2016

Youko and her younger step brother Jinkou are demon siblings who strongly believe that one must stop their evil deeds and walk on the path of righteousness. They travel across the country in search of those who conduct evil, and to cleanse them of their harsh ways. Along the way they meet a weak willed swordsman named Hyoudou Shinsuke, who eventually travels with them in their quest for peace. They soon embark on a suspicious monk organization that at first glance seems harmless, but there’s a much darker intent going on as they seek out war and suffering instead of harmony and oneness.

There are no loose ends in this wonderful work by Mizukami Satoshi, as he throws you into a world that’s full of twists and turns, and events that demonstrate growth as each battle grows increasingly larger. Once you’re introduced to Senya however, that’s when the story takes a huge leap and the action just explodes as Senya just takes out one demon after the next with his incredibly strong demon hunting skills, and more secrets behind the organization are revealed.

6. Hataraku Maou-sama!

Until he can somehow manage to crawl out of the hole he’s in, Sadao applies for a job at fast food restaurant and now must use his devilish ways to make his way to the top of management as his new adventure begins.

Who would’ve thought that the devil would somehow find himself behind the counter of a fast food joint, serving customers up a hot meal that he clearly doesn’t enjoy. You laugh hysterically as Sadao clings to dear life trying to get the hang of everyday routine, and trying to understand just why he was thrown into this world in the first place. He runs into constant problems and can’t seem to wrap his head around romantic encounters, so his awkward behavior leaves him dazed on frustrated which evolves into more crazy antics between him and his colleagues.

5. Maoyuu Maou Yuusha: 'Kono Ware no Mono to Nare, Yuusha yo' 'Kotowaru!'

  • Mangaka: Touno, Mamare
  • Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Demons, Fantasy, Romance, Shounen
  • Volumes: 18
  • Published: April 2011 - April 2016

The Hero arrives at the Demon Queen’s castle after battling an arduous journey to get there, and is now asked to help out. The Hero explains that much of the war has brought misery to the land, and that the demons are unrelenting in their quest to seek victory. The Queen disagrees and states that humans have since united as a society and that the population has seen exponential growth in various areas. She further argues that by ending the war it would only disrupt the balance and create more bloodshed as time passes. The Hero, persuaded by her word, complies with her and joins forces to see that her plans flourish.

Economic simulation and interdependence is what this manga truly emphasizes in its story, as you see a young demon queen who strives to see that her kingdom grow into something powerful and graceful, with the help of an intelligent man who eventually grows fond feelings for her. A lot of philosophy is embraced within the story as well, as details pertaining to sustaining agriculture, warfare, and political relationships are all explained in detailed context. While it is a lot to swallow for some, the basic premise is that demons and humans should work together in harmony to rebuild a world that’s been riddled with war for years, and these two are determined to see that happen.

4. Crimson Spell

  • Mangaka: Yamane, Ayano
  • Genres: Action, Adventure, Demons, Drama, Fantasy, Romance, Yaoi
  • Volumes: 5
  • Published: May 2004 - Present

Prince Val no longer wants to see his people suffer at the hands of bloodthirsty demons, so he tries to use a demonic sword to protect them but is then cursed in the process of it all. Desperate to find a cure, he races out of the kingdom with the intention to restore himself. Along the way he encounters a mysterious person named Halvir, who supposedly knows how to break the curse and rid Val of his suffering. Clinging on to dear life, Prince Val has no choice but to take heed to Halvir’s negotiation as they now must work together to tame the beast that lies within Val.

Expect to see lots of sex happening between these two as their passion for each other grows over time. When we mentioned taming the beast, perhaps yaoi will paint that picture for you in one form or another, but basically it’s a lot of man love and Val trying to cope with his demonic side. Havi uses secret “techniques” to help relieve Val of his inner pain, while they encounter enemies along the way. It’s a romantic action manga that throws in a lot of Uke and Seme moments, and it’s complex story is very gripping that you’ll keep coming back for more as you read.

3. Kanata Kara

  • Mangaka: Hikawa, Kyoko
  • Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Demons, Drama, Fantasy, Romance, Shoujo

With no other choice but to survive in this world, Noriko decides to take the side of a mysterious man she encountered during her arrival.

Noriko gets thrown into this crazy world that’s filled with evil demons who are out to cause havoc and bring about torment, but to work with this mysterious man she needs to learn the language. Noriko’s feelings for Izark, the mysterious man, grow fonder as he acts as her protector through hard times while doing the best she can with her own abilities to see that they survive. Their interaction may come off as typical shoujo at times, but what truly sells this manga is their true devotion to hang on despite being constantly threatened at every corner.

2. Hana to Akuma

Vivi slowly starts to shed off his demonic persona as he develops a more softer and nurturing side, but you beg to question just why Vivi was chosen as the sole caregiver of Hana in the first place. As you read more into it, more truths are illustrated and your heart starts to quiver as the plot will leave you clamoring for more.

1. Berserk

What more can we say about this incredibly powerful and action packed rollercoaster? Anyone who finds themselves in Guts’ position will know exactly what this man is going through. His unrelenting desire to completely decimate anything that walks is an understatement, because he just doesn’t know when to put his sword down and take a breather.
