Entering the first month of January in 2017, first and foremost, we would like to wish everyone to have a jolly Happy New Year and a prosperous one. Just like how we should face the new years with much positivity and joy, this list coincides with the New Year nuance. As humans, emotions have a great way of influencing people, ultimately changing and molding our personalities to become the person we sought to be. Perhaps it was based on this simple fact that Game Freak were inspired to create Pokemon that feel the same way. Happiness and sadness.
This became a reality in the 2nd Generation Pokemon of the franchise, introducing new Pokemon that have the ability to evolve into a unique Pokemon if, and only if, their Happiness levels are maxed out. Curious? Say no more, let’s get right into the list! Let’s go!
10. Alolan Persian

— Pokémon (@Pokemon) October 27, 2016
- Generation: 1
- Pokédex #: 53
To start this joyful list, we have Alolan Persian. Although originally this feline Pokemon was first introduced in the 1st Generation of the Pokemon franchise, it wasn’t until the 7th Generation that Game Freak decided to give the originally simple looking Persian the new ‘Alolan’ form.
For starters, the Alolan Persian does have distinctive characteristics that differ from its regular counterpart. In terms of appearance, it has a sort of grayish, darker skin color, which complements its Dark-type element. The head is slightly larger and much rounder than the previous, which gives the Alolan Persian an overall elegant and sophisticated look. Of course evolving from its previous form, Alolan Meowth, it required a high-level of happiness to evolve.
9. Leavanny
- Generation: 5
- Pokédex #: 542
Next, we have Leavanny on the list. This uniquely shaped Bug/Grass-type Pokemon was introduced in the 5th Generation of the Pokemon franchise. In terms of its appearance, you might have seen it in real life, as it resembles the ‘Leaf Insect’. Although this Pokemon might not appeal to some of those who are not big fans of bugs, the appearance of Leavanny says otherwise. Also known as the Nurturing Pokemon, Leavanny has a really gentle appearance which will definitely win fans hearts over.
Leavanny has a 3 stage evolution line, starting off as a Sewaddle, which then evolves into Swadloon and then finally just like the previous entry on this list, it requires a high level of Happiness for a Swadloon to be able to evolve into a Leavanny. Who wouldn’t want a cool, gentle-looking bug in their Pokemon collection?
8. Lucario
- Generation: 4
- Pokédex #: 448
Taking the number 8 spot on the list is Lucario! This unique Pokemon evolved from a Riolu, which you would’ve guessed it, must have its Happiness Level Maxed out. Not only that, this Fighting-type Pokemon would only evolve during the day, so that’s one extra thing to keep in mind if you want your cute Riolu to evolve into the awesome Lucario!
Lucario can often be mistaken as one of the Legendary Pokemon, which probably because Lucario has its own feature film. The release of the 8th Pokemon movie titled, “Lucario and the Mystery of Mew” brought much attention to this wondrous Pokemon. So make your Riolu happy today, and stand a chance to obtain this cool Pokemon.
7. Crobat

— Pokémon (@Pokemon) October 22, 2015
- Generation: 2
- Pokédex #: 169
Now I’m sure we are all familiar with Zubats, and Golbats, and how annoying they can be in the Pokemon franchise games. It can be emotionally upsetting if you didn’t carry Repels with you and you enter a cave, literally it’s like every 5 – 7 steps you take, you’d have a high chance of encountering either a Zubat or a Golbat. But don’t hate them completely just yet, because Golbat, starting the 2nd Generation of the Pokemon franchise, has another evolution line, as it’s able to evolve into a Crobat.
Just like all the other Pokemon that are on this list, Golbat has to have its Happiness Levels maxed out first before able to evolve into the cool-looking Crobat. If played the 2nd Generation franchise games, you’d know that one way to do so is to give your Golbat a haircut every day in the game. Unlike Riolu that only evolves during the day, Golbat doesn’t go through the same process. As long as Golbat reached its required Happiness level, then come day or night, it will definitely evolve into Crobat!
6. Espeon
- Generation: 2
- Pokédex #: 196
This next Pokemon in the list is quite the unique one. Espeon, also known to be the Sun Pokemon is introduced in the 2nd Generation of the Pokemon franchise. Espeon evolves from an Eevee, which I’m sure Pokemon fans out there know that to be the only Pokemon capable of such unique evolution line. Using different element stones, such as Fire Stone, Thunder Stone, Water Stone, Eevee is able to evolve into 3 different type of Pokemon according to its evolution stone.
With the 2nd Generation released, Game Freak decided to add 2 more unique evolution line to Eevee, the Psychic-type Espeon, and Dark-type Umbreon. It often becomes a common misconception to people that since Espeon was the Sun Pokemon, it would require a Sun Stone to evolve, but the truth couldn’t be further, as an Eevee required its Happiness level to be at a Maximum and during daytime to evolve into an Espeon.
In terms of appearance, this Psychic-type Pokemon has a velvety-pink skin color and slender legs and a peculiar forked tail that gives it an alien-like look, but nonetheless a very elegant Pokemon to look at.
5. Umbreon
- Generation: 2
- Pokédex #: 197
If you have read the previous entry of the list, then there should be no surprise that Umbreon would be next on the list. This Dark-type Pokemon is the counterpart to its Psychic-type Eevee evolution line, Espeon. Umbreon, also known as the ‘Moonlight’ Pokemon evolves just like Espeon, which requires a Max Level Happiness, but instead of Daytime, Umbreon can only be evolved during Nighttime.
As a Dark-type Pokemon, Umbreon’s appearance says it all with its sleek black body and crimson eyes. Not to mention its yellow ring markings on its forehead, ears, and legs that are said to glow during the night giving it a striking appearance. A Pokemon that truly fits the characteristics of darkness. A definite must have in your Pokemon collection!
4. Lopunny

— Pokémon (@Pokemon) August 10, 2014
- Generation: 4
- Pokédex #: 428
Moving on from both the Eevee evolutions, we have the cute, feminine-looking bunny Pokemon Lopunny! The Normal-type Pokemon from the 4th Generation really has appealing characteristics, so much so, that it has sparked some controversy over the years of being overly sexual. It was also said that its bunny-like appearance was based on the infamous Playboy Mansion bunny girls, resembling a woman with fur cuffs.
Appearance aside, it evolves from its base Pokemon Buneary, the ‘Rabbit’ Pokemon and will only do so if its Happiness levels are maxed out as well. The sight of this Pokemon will surely melt hearts and bring smiles upon Pokemon fans. So cheer up, and be happy as a bunny!
3. Snorlax
- Generation: 1
- Pokédex #: 143
If you’re working all day long or attending classes and lectures, you’d know how valuable sleep time is, and how much joy it brings you. Meet the Pokemon that does nothing else but sleep and eat; Snorlax, the Sleeping Pokemon. What a life huh? This ridiculously obese Pokemon is said to eat around 900 pounds of food every day and then goes back to sleep. Because of its lazy nature, Snorlax is known to be extremely docile to the point where small children would use its gigantic belly as a place to play.
During the first 3 Generations of the Pokemon franchise, Snorlax doesn’t have any evolution line, and it wasn’t until the 4th Generation that Munchlax was introduced as its base Pokemon. Being the baby pokemon of Snorlax, its eating traits remained as Munchlax is also known to be quite the eater. It was also featured during the 7th Pokemon Movie titled: Destiny Deoxys, where Munchlax was seen to be gobbling down massive amounts of food. Munchlax evolves into a Snorlax only if it has its Happiness levels at the maximum.
2. Blissey
- Generation: 2
- Pokédex #: 242
Taking the number 2 spot of the Happiness Pokemon list is Blissey, also known as the ‘Happiness’ Pokemon. This Pokemon evolves from the rare Pokemon Chansey when its Happiness level reaches the maximum. For the Pokemon players out there, you’d know how painstaking it is to find a Chansey, let alone catch one. It’s even mentioned in the Pokédex that it’s said to bring happiness to whoever that manages to catch one. That’s only Chansey.
With its evolved form, Blissey is the very definition of happiness and it reflects through its appearance as Blissey has grown feather-like wings around its waist and shoulder, giving it an angelic look. It’s also mentioned in the Pokédex that one bite of Blissey’s egg that it carries in its belly pouch will render the person kind and pleasant to everyone. Truly a cure to every sadness!
1. Togetic
- Generation: 2
- Pokédex #: 176
And now for the number 1 spot of the Top 10 Max Level Happiness Pokemon list, is none other than… *drumroll* Togetic! Introduced in the 2nd Generation of the Pokemon franchise, this cheerful looking Pokemon is also known to be the ‘Happiness’ Pokemon. It evolves from a Togepi when its happiness levels reach maximum.
If you had seen the Pokemon TV Series, then you’d be familiar with a Togepi since Misty carried one during her journeys with Ash. Just like in the anime, the majority of the time, you can see that Togepi is often smiling and waving its small short arms. Even in the Pokédex, it was mentioned how Togepi’s shell can bring luck and happiness. With its cute smile and grace, who wouldn’t be charmed?
Final Thoughts
That’s it for the Top 10 Happiness Pokemon! Which Pokemon in the list that appeals to you? Do you have any other pokemon in mind that should’ve made it into the list? Leave them in the comments below!
Happiness is something that a lot of people seek these days, some say there’s no point in chasing it as it resides in the heart of each individual, so what are we chasing exactly? Is it really possible to rely on things to make individuals happy? Like Money? Fame? Prestige?
Perhaps it’s the small moments in life that we kept forgetting since we are too busy focusing on the bigger picture. Perhaps it’s the time when you did well on a test, or that time someone complimented on your work, or perhaps just a warm welcoming dinner after a day's hard work. Nevertheless, with the start of 2017, perhaps it’s refreshing to take a moment to look back and notice the little things once in awhile. Perhaps you too might feel happy about something! Cheers!
