With this monumental series finally finished both in manga and anime form, it’s time to discuss the updated list of Fairy Tail’s strongest characters. The Alvarez arc ups the ante for powerful magic, so some new faces have cropped up on this list to contend with a selection of old favorites. Unleash your Third Origin and join us on this countdown of master mages from the world of Fairy Tail!
10. Lucy Heartfilia
Our point-of-view character for the story started out as a middling Celestial Spirit mage with a few strong kick attacks and a whip so she could fight alongside her summons, but Lucy has made significant strides since her humble beginnings. She commands 10 of the 12 Zodiac Celestial Spirits, pioneered the “Star Dress” spell that allows her to use their power as her own, and figured out how to rewrite Natsu’s Book of E.N.D. so she could save him from otherwise fatal injuries and release him from Zeref’s control. We’re so happy to see how far she’s come!
9. Anna Heartfilia
Lucy’s distant ancestor was also a Celestial Spirit mage, albeit one who had an even grander task to accomplish than just keeping Natsu alive. Anna was in charge of raising the Dragon Slayer children 400 years ago, setting them up with their adoptive dragon parents, and sending them through the (nearly impossible to open and close) Eclipse Gate to the future so that they could eventually grow up to defeat Acnologia. Even though she played more of a background role in the story, Anna’s magic had to be powerful to get the Dragon Slayers to the future in the first place.
8. Ultear Milkovich
Formerly a recurring villain in the early arcs of Fairy Tail, Ultear redeemed herself by saving everyone at the Grand Magic Games from certain death during the dragon attacks orchestrated by Future Rogue. She used the forbidden “Last Ages” spell, which reversed time by one minute at the cost of aging herself to near death. With the knowledge of what happened during that minute, countless people were able to dodge attacks that killed them the first go-around. Ultear even comes back in spirit form during the Dimaria fight to break Wendy and Chelia out of stopped time!
7. Irene Belserion
As one of the Spriggan 12, Irene is already at a much higher level than most mages we’ve seen before. She can enchant weapons to become living people, restructure the landmass of an entire continent at will, and pull meteors out of orbit to throw at people. She’s also the originator of Dragon Slayer magic and used to be able to turn into a dragon herself. The only one able to defeat her is her equally overpowered daughter, the indomitable Erza Scarlet.
6. Mavis Vermilion
The first Guild Master of Fairy Tail has slept underneath the guild hall for over 100 years, only able to appear as a spirit until the Alvarez arc when she returns to help lead Fairy Tail to victory. She grew up as a penniless child with only her illusion magic to keep her company, but eventually became a master tactician and mage who invented the three great Fairy spells: Fairy Law, Fairy Glitter, and Fairy Sphere. She also suffers from Ankhseram’s curse just like Zeref, so she’s the only one who can truly understand him. In the end, that knowledge is what allows her to defeat him once and for all.
5. Erza Scarlet
On the surface, Erza doesn’t seem to have enough magic power or strength to justify her virtually unblemished winning streak over opponents that could easily wipe the floor with her comrades. However, Erza possesses the most ironclad armor that any anime character can have: plot armor. It doesn’t matter if every bone in her body is broken, her pain sensors are turned up to eleven, or if she’s crushed by a meteor, she’ll shrug all of it off and claim victory over her dumbfounded enemies. Why? “Because she’s Erza.”
4. Gildarts Clive
Gildarts is one of Fairy Tail’s most elite mages – he barely appears in the series because he’s usually busy taking on S-class missions that nobody else can even hope to handle (Captain Marvel style). When he returns home, the entire town of Magnolia has to shift its layout with industrial lifts just so that his “Crush” magic doesn’t accidentally destroy everything in its path. During the Tenrou Island arc, the normally cocksure Natsu shakes in fear and admits defeat after just a sampling of Gildarts’ true power. The only reason the S-class hero loses points is that he doesn’t do much during the final fights with Zeref and Acnologia.
Zeref has been the mysterious “man behind the man” for most villain groups in the series, either as a shadowy general or just as an object of worship. He is burdened with Ankhseram’s curse, which kills everything that he cares about if it enters a small radius around him. However, he still manages to amass a gigantic army in the neighboring country of Alvarez because he doesn’t view them as people, so he’s still more than a match for the Fairy Tail guild. He can also create demons and control Natsu through the Book of E.N.D., so it’ll take more than just brute force to kill him...
This ancient dragon is so immensely powerful that, when the Fairy Tail guild first encountered him during the Tenrou Island arc, they had to freeze themselves inside a magical sphere for seven years just to survive one of his basic attacks. Once the last arc of the series comes around, Acnologia is determined to kill every single Dragon Slayer and take over the world. And since he’s the Magic Dragon Slayer, regular magic doesn’t work on him at all. How can our heroes possibly hope to scratch him, let alone defeat him?
1. Natsu Dragneel
Natsu is the Fire Dragon Slayer, adoptive son of the dragon Igneel and the intrepid main character of Fairy Tail. By all rights, he shouldn’t be able to outmatch Zeref or Acnologia, but with the combined power of his Dragon Slayer magic, his friends’ help, his own dogged determination, and even more plot armor than Erza, he prevails in the end. He even overcomes the magical tumor that nearly kills him through sheer willpower! Without a doubt, Natsu is the strongest character in the entire series.
We would be remiss if we didn’t mention Gray’s Ice-Make and Devil Slayer powers, Makarov’s Fairy Law and giant form, Dimaria’s time stop magic, and Laxus’ fiendish Lighting Dragon Slayer abilities. But what do you think? Did we leave out any of your favorite strong Fairy Tail mages? Let us know in the comments, and thanks so much for reading!
Whenever the classic topic of ranking the most powerful characters in an anime series comes up, series such as Dragonball Z, One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach tend to be mentioned the most due to the vast array of characters, the powerful abilities each of them possess, and the battles fought between them to demonstrate just how powerful they really are. While there are other anime that deserve to be included with them for those same reasons, one anime is already mentioned in their company: Fairy Tail.
In addition to the traits mentioned above, Fairy Tail also shares a similar debate with Dragonball Z and One Piece in the sense that among the strongest characters, the power gap is very small, leading to legitimate arguments as to who actually deserves to be considered the strongest and what criteria to consider. As a result, not everybody in Fairy Tail can be included in a top 10 list such as this. However, based on the feats they’ve displayed, who the characters have defeated/held their own against, their overall consistency with their power, and how other characters regard them, here are the Top 10 Strongest Fairy Tail characters.
This is an update to the original article, so when you are done, be sure to check it out as well!
10. Precht "Hades" Gaebolg
One of the original founders of the Fairy Tail Guild and the 2nd Master of Fairy Tail after Mavis Vermillion, Hades (known as Precht Gaebold then) ended up leaving the Guild in the care of Makarov Dreyar in order to discover the origin of magic. This journey would lead to the discovery of Zeref himself, resulting in a reformation of what he originally believed in as well as the founding of the Dark Guild known as Grimoire Heart in order to ultimately revive Zeref. Hades has a variety of techniques that make him a formidable foe, but among his most signature techniques in combat are his Demon’s Eye, which grants Hades abilities such as bringing things back to life under his control and immense Magic Power, and his abilities regarding Chain Magic, which were frequently used in his youth. Although he was defeated by Natsu (with some help from the Fairy Tail Guild as a whole) and is eventually killed by Zeref himself, Hades is certainly a force to be reckoned with.
9. Erza Scarlet
An intimidating S-Class Mage in the Fairy Tail Guild, Erza Scarlet’s abilities in combat are nothing to dismiss despite being ranked at #9. Erza is an opponent most people don’t want to cross not only because of her skills, but also because of her personality, as she tends to be pretty strict and impatient. Erza’s magic mainly revolves around requipping; she has a variety of different armors and outfits that she uses in combat, and combined with her quick reflexes, her swordplay and her durability, make her someone you don’t want to underestimate. Accomplishing feats such as defeating 100 monsters at once, mastering different swords, and temporarily serving as the guild’s 7th Guild Master during Makarov’s absence just shows how much Erza should be respected in terms of her strength.
8. Jellal Fernandes
Considered to be the main antagonist throughout the series, Jellal’s strength is balanced throughout his various techniques both in and outside of combat. Once a member of the Magic Council, Jellal worked towards permanently eliminating the members of the Fairy Tail Guild, and possessed the necessary manipulations skills to hide his true nature from those around him. However, a key part to Jellal’s character revolves around him losing his memory and holding himself accountable for his mistakes as he relearns his past, resulting in Jellal becoming even stronger. Jellal’s magical abilities span from Fire, Water, Wind, and Earth Magic to Heavenly Body Magic, Thought Projection, and even Darkness Magic, resulting in a variety of different techniques to defend against while fighting him. Through these techniques and more, Jellal is able to hold his own against almost anyone.
7. Laxus Dreyar
A second generation Dragon Slayer and Makarov’s grandson, Laxus specializes in Lightning Magic. This specialization results in Laxus’ techniques being incredibly powerful, such as producing and manipulating electricity at will from anywhere, turning himself into a lightning bolt and moving at incredible speeds, and (in conjunction with his Dragon Slayer Magic) powerful physical attacks that can cause mass destruction. As a result, Laxus can back up his arrogant attitude, something that eventually results in a head to head rivalry with Natsu. Considering that he is on par with Natsu and can go toe to toe with him, it’s safe to say that Laxus is among the best of the best when it comes to strength.
6. Makarov Dreyar
The 3rd, 6th, and 8th Guild Master of the Fairy Tail Guild and one of the Ten Wizard Saints, Makarov relies a lot on his experience in combat, which is impressive for someone that’s almost 90 years old. Despite his small stature and his unique eccentricities, Makarov makes up for these with his skillset. His Giant Magic allows him to grow to a size as big as Tenrou Island, his Maximum Defense Seal is among the best to rely on for protection, and his use of Fairy Law is so powerful that it defeated a fellow Wizard Saint in one blow. Make no mistake, Makarov’s abilities combined with his amazing sense to love and believe in people easily rank him among the best.
5. Natsu Dragneel
The protagonist of the series, Natsu has certainly seen his ups and downs when it comes to combat, as he has lost to all of Fairy Tail’s current S-Class mages despite showing abilities that prove he can hold his own with them if not defeat them. As a result, the consistency of his abilities can be lacking. Yet despite these setbacks, Natsu continues to grow in strength, and his use of Fire Dragon Slayer Magic as well as the power he achieved with Fire Dragon King Mode cannot be ignored. Combined with his enhanced reflexes, hearing, strength, and speed as well as his resolve for growing stronger, Natsu certainly has quite the case for being the strongest mage.
4. Gildarts Clive
The Fairy Tail Guild’s ace in the hole as well as its 5th Guild Master (albeit very brief), Gildarts is extremely laid back in his approach to fighting, never holding his opponent in too high a regard but never underestimating them either. His signature magic is a type of Caster Magic known as Crush, which is exactly what it sounds like: anything that comes into contact with Gildarts, including an opponent’s Magic spells, will be obliterated into pieces. In addition to his mastery of Crush, Gildarts is also an expert in hand to hand combat, something he effortlessly uses to overcome Natsu in their fight despite Natsu’s strength, and possesses an incredible amount of Magic Power, even among S-Class Mages. There’s certainly a reason why he’s Fairy Tail’s ace and the next choice for Guild Master.
Also known as the Black Dragon and one of the first ever Dragon Slayers, Acnologia quite simply possesses a massive amount of raw power that arguably puts him in the conversation as to whether he’s the strongest character overall. What Acnologia has accomplished with his abilities is nothing short of incredible: using his Dragon Slayer Magic to reap the souls of actual dragons, being the one responsible for why Gildarts has a prosthetic left arm and left leg, and possessing an immense amount of Magic Power to the point where even Zeref considered him powerful enough to rule the world. With his immense strength, Magic Power, and transformation abilities, Acnologia’s strength is easily recognized among the best of the best.
2. Mavis Vermillion
The first Fairy Tail Guild Master as well as a cofounder of Fairy Guild, Mavis’ strength lies in not only her Magic Power, but also her skills as a tactician, The strategies she employs in combat for both herself and the rest of the Guild allow them to overcome almost any opponent to the point where it seems that Mavis is reading the future. Mavis’ magic abilities themselves are also incredible: throughout most of the series she is comatose, relying on her powerful Thought Projection technique to communicate only to those that possess the Fairy Tail Guild symbol. In addition, Mavis can utilize her Illusion Magic to project some realistic and scary images, and her Fairy Glitter Spell allows Mavis to concentrate energy from the sun, the moon, and the stars. It is also because of Mavis’ Fairy Sphere technique that the Fairy Tail Guild are able to defend against Acnologia’s Dragon roar technique, something very few mages can defend against. She even has a few Dark Magic abilities in her arsenal to use as well. All in all, despite her age and her unique limitations, Mavis certainly has what it takes to possibly be considered the strongest Fairy tail character.
The strongest character in Fairy Tail bar none, Zeref is revered as the strongest Mage of all time as well as the most evil. Zeref’s character is complicated: he is very vindictive and won’t hesitate to kill those he believes are evil, yet feels he must atone for all the sins he has committed over the course of his existence. Zeref’s strength lies in his mastery of all forms of Dark Magic at a young age and the fact that his Magic Power is so enormous that at times he can’t consciously control it; the only way he can is if he remains cold-hearted and holds no regard for human life. Ankhseram Black Magic in particular allows Zeref to kill anything he desires, resulting in the side effect of immortality for Zeref as well as the inability to age. Zeref also has a mastery of Living Magic, resulting in some incredibly powerful demons. Not to mention techniques such as Law, a bright light that can inflict powerful damage to its target and also the technique Zeref taught Mavis, or Immobilization Magic, which allows Zeref to freeze time over a surrounding area. It’s without a doubt that Zeref makes the best case for being the strongest character in Fairy Tail.
Here is the final list for the top 10 strongest characters in Fairy Tail. What do you guys think? Are there characters that are higher than others that shouldn’t be? Should characters such as Igneel, Jura Nekis, Gray Fullbuster, and/or Gajeel Redfox have been included, and if so, who should have they replaced? Let us know in the comments!
“Fairy Tail” has grown to be one of the most popular shounen out there, following the classics like “One Piece”, “Naruto”, and “Bleach”. Naturally, it’s inclined to focus on the importance of relationships and bonds that you create with the people around you. The story is a little sneaky, though, because they leave out the aspect that appeals most to us, in terms of the fights. This aspect is: who are the strongest characters? Who are the characters that, no matter who they fight, are able to hold their own and prove that they shouldn’t be messed with?
10. Precht "Hades" Gaebolg
Dubbed the second guild master of Fairy Tail, Hades turned over to the dark side and abandoned his guild members, including Makarov. He’s only introduced in the Tenroujima arc, right before the members on the island are introduced to Zeref. His overall appearance is intimidating, but what truly makes the members of Fairy Tail feel petrified is the fact that he wears an eye patch to cover his Demon’s Eye. When activated, it changes a few of his physical appearances to make him seem more intimidating.
The power of Hades’ Demon’s Eye is a caster-type magic, which means that his magic power is expelled from his body as opposed to through a weapon or another external source. Of course, all mages in the “Fairy Tail” universe uses magic power that comes from their body, but having a Demon’s Eye is related to the reawakening of Zeref, automatically making someone like Hades a hundred times more petrifying than he originally was. The fact that he was a former Fairy Tail guild master makes the whole situation much worse too, since it’s obvious he abandoned and deserted the very people he was supposed to protect.
9. Minerva Orland
Daughter of Jiemma, Minerva is introduced in the story as having absolute control over the members of the Sabertooth guild. She’s unforgiving, vindictive, and definitely places herself over the others, with the exception of her father. Of course, that only lasted until the end of the Grand Magic Games. The reason Minerva is so feared by the members of her guild, as well as others who witness how she treats others, is because she uses threats as a way to ge what she wants.
After Sting Eucliffe lost his battle against Natsu in the GMG, Minerva zapped away Lector, Sting’s trusted Exceed. As a “Fairy Tail” fan and knowing how important Happy and Carla are to Natsu and Wendy, having an Exceed taken away from a Dragon Slayer — even if they’re the enemy — is something that is sure to pull at your heart strings.
Not only is Minerva a master of manipulation, but she was also ruthless in her fight against Lucy during the GMG, and even more so during Erza and Kagura’s fight. Seemingly strong characters would have bowed down to Minerva, because she knew how to find what was most important to a person, and threaten to put its existence in danger. Characters like Sting were perceived as strong, but not as strong as Minerva. Her heartless and cold reputation was even more enforced when she killed her own father without hesitation, making her even more of a spectacle to fear.
Of course, in the end, she was taken down by none other than Erza, though that still doesn’t diminish the actions she had already committed in order to gain more power.
8. Erza Scarlet
Although there is a bit of bias on my part because Erza is my favourite female in “Fairy Tail”, it’s pretty obvious that she does deserve a spot in the top ten strongest characters, since all characters who have heard of her name fear her greatly. After countless missions and her requipping magic that houses her different swords and armor, Erza had truly made a name for herself across most guilds, if not all. Her strong sense of justice and ethics drives her to protect those important to her, and those who are innocent, simply because her desire to make things right make it easy for her to recognise what is valuable and what isn’t.
It is no secret that Erza doesn’t know who her biological parents are, and it is definitely known that she was thrown into a sort of concentration camp, where children her age as well as people in their old age were tested on for experiments. Having such a dark background caused her to develop a sense of protectiveness over anyone she loved, which ultimately is what gives her the strength and the title “Titania”, making her a truly frightening yet admirable foe — she doesn’t fight to win, she fights to protect, which sets her apart from her enemies and makes her unique.
7. Jellal Fernandes
A previous member of the Magic Council, it’s only natural that Jellal is thought to be considerably strong. As we know, he originally had a counter identity named Siegrain, who was, in one word, evil. Essentially, he wished for the destruction of Fairy Tail guild members, and while he worked in the Magic Council as a cover up for his illegal crimes, no one was able to figure that out until later on. He was conniving, manipulative, and something else about him simply screamed intimidating! Like Minerva, Jellal/Siegrain used manipulation as a tactic to establish fear and power so that people wouldn’t question his actions.
Having been a member of the Magic Council isn’t enough to call Jellal strong, in this case. During the Nirvana arc, he is revealed to have lost his memory of his actions, though he does know that he has committed crimes he cannot keep track of. At this moment, we feel absolute sadness for his character, and when he opens up the portal of Nirvana that was supposedly to kill himself, we truly learn of his strength.
His personality is one that carries many burdens and he holds himself accountable for his mistakes, which, similar to Erza, causes him to develop a sense of justice that is gentle, yet firm. Coming from the same background as Erza is no surprise as to why he is strong, either. Without his past, Jellal might not be as strong as he is now.
6. Laxus Dreyar
Grandson of the third guild master of Fairy Tail, Laxus is known amongst his guild members to be monstrously strong, and with appearances such as his, who wouldn’t think so? The title of a Dragon Slayer is already one that has most people in the Fairy Tail universe shaking in their boots. Of course, Laxus is only a second-generation Dragon Slayer, which gives him disadvantages that first-generation Dragon Slayers do not. However, he still possesses a considerable amount of magic power inside him, which essentially means that he can exude as much magic as he pleases. Being a Lightning Dragon Slayer is already intimidating enough.
When Laxus is first introduced, he’s perceived as cocky and arrogant, which automatically sets a difference between the usual Fairy Tail members from him and thus, it possibly makes you dislike him. When he disrespects Makarov and inadvertently assumes that he is the strongest of the guild, it sets off Natsu, and there is a clear rivalry between the two that seems to simmer. Ultimately, his brute strength is on par with Natsu’s, and anyone who opposes him in a fight will surely lose, with their tail between their legs.
5. Natsu Dragneel
Surely you didn’t think that the protagonist of Fairy Tail would not make his way to the top ten strongest characters! All the way back from episode one, we see that Natsu is, simply put, a freak of nature. Known notoriously for destruction, eating and breathing fire, and having a blue cat that goes with him everywhere, Natsu is the kind of character that no one would want to mess with. Having been introduced as having a title known amongst others as “Salamander”, it’s pretty clear that he’s caused enough ruckus for people to give him a nickname. Not only that, but he is incredibly protective over his guild and his friends, which makes for a fearsome foe.
At this point in the anime, it’s pretty obvious that out of the three first-generation Dragon Slayers, Natsu can be considered the strongest. With a resolution to protect everyone he has come to care about, as well as the resolve to become infinitely stronger, it’s not so surprising that many enemies of the guild know his name and want to fight him. Never willing to turn down a challenge, Natsu usually wins his fights not because he knows how strong he is, but because he relies on the strength that his loved ones give him.
4. Makarov Dreyar
A member of the Ten Wizard Saints as well as the master of the strongest guild in Fiore, Makarov, although originally tiny and deceptively frail, is actually quite dangerous. A lot of the stronger characters in “Fairy Tail” received their titles through brute strength, and while Makarov is physically strong, he also has ideals that place justice in favour over his own desires, which is what makes the members of his guild admire and love him. Traditionally, characters with a strong sense of justice and the need to protect those dear to him are the very ones that their enemies underestimate. Once you come across a character like Makarov, it’s wise to be careful!
While the anime has shown many opportunities for Makarov to shine, I feel the best moment was when he, along with the S-Class Wizard candidates, were on Tenroujima. Just as the existence of the people he refers to as his children is threatened, Makarov jumps in to protect them. This specific and touching moment is what defines Makarov’s character and his strength. Without him, the very core of the Fairy Tail guild would feel empty.
3. Gildarts Clive
Who in their right mind would accuse Gildarts Clive of being weak when he has destructive magic? Being able to take any form of matter and destroy it is something anyone should be afraid of, because it basically means that if you get in his way, he has no problem with destroying you. Yikes! His general appearance is one that intimidates others, though of course for characters like Natsu, he’s considered someone to train with, in order to improve to become better. Natsu, who’s considered to be a prodigy in terms of strength because of the origins of his magic, was not able to defeat Gildarts at a fight — and Gildarts didn’t even have to try to fight the kid.
It’s also a known fact that Makarov had asked Gildarts to become the next guild master after him, in case anything ever happened. Naturally, those who are assigned or asked to be guild master of Fairy Tail are those who are not only strong, but who have a strong sense of family and would put their lives on the line for their comrades. For whatever reason he had though, Gildarts denounced his title as guild master and gave it back to Makarov, before taking off again and continuing his journey, partaking in S-Class jobs like he normally would.
2. Jura Nekis
Also a member of the Ten Wizard Saints, Jura is stated to have incredible strength stats during the Grand Magic Games. Being an expert in Earth Magic may not seem like such a big deal, especially when compared with Dragon Slayer Magic, but it does play around with the elements, which should be enough indication as to how much strength really comes along with that type of power. Another character that focuses on hard work being the pinnacle of strength as opposed to relying on skills that one is born with, Jura is someone that most characters fear, merely due to his patience and his ability to calculate a situation under pressure.
When faced with Hoteye in the Oracíon Seis arc, he is asked by his enemy whether he thinks Earth Magic that melts is stronger, or one that hardens is stronger. As a simple answer, Jura tells his opponent that, “the quality of the Magic itself is immaterial. He who has the stronger conviction will always prevail”. While he obviously doesn’t show up constantly in the story, the times that he does, you can count on Jura being a badass and blowing his enemies out of the water.
Not so surprisingly, it is difficult to think of a character in the entire anime series that is stronger than Zeref, mostly because all the other villains have been defeated. When this villain was officially introduced in the Tenroujima arc, we are thrown off by the fact that he starts crying when he sees Natsu. Naturally, this also throws off everyone on that island, as well, which is why it’s incredibly frightening when he brings out his dragon Acnologia. Suddenly, no one knows what to do or how to defeat him! The characters that were on the island at that time were all taken aback by how much power Zeref, as one entire person, could have, and it made them afraid of the consequences if they were to lose this battle.
At this point in the anime, Zeref’s demons has been introduced to the plot. Essentially, the reason for the existence of these demons is so that they can ultimately revive him or kill him. There has been no character in “Fairy Tail” where their life was being hindered by multiple factors, and the fact that there are specific demons that were created for the express purpose of ridding of Zeref is enough to tell you how terrifying he really is.
Although with a little bit of unconventionality in terms of the genre it is meant to be placed under, “Fairy Tail” has created some unique characters that aren’t quite that comparable with other series! Surely, the more you watch it, the more you will experience individual characters’ strength as they grow into admirable people. But hey, isn’t that the point of shounen manga and anime?
