A lot happened in the anime industry during 2017. There were tons of amazing shows that the community loved, but there were shows that really didn’t catch the spotlight because they weren’t good enough. Naturally, there were also shows located in the middle of the spectrum. You either love these kinds of anime or outright reject their existence. Reverse harem anime is somewhere along those lines. Whether you hate it or love it, 2017 anime wouldn’t be complete without reverse harem. Unlike the past years, 2017 only showed the community a few of this type of anime. However instead, there were tons of manservice shows that we were able to enjoy. We must say, that isn’t a bad deal, right?
Still, we’re are here to appreciate reverse harem anime shows, although they may be few. We have listed 4 reverse harem anime that may pique your interest! While waiting for that anime show that you have been watching this season to update, why not give these listed shows a try since most of them are completed. Anyway, here are the top 4 best reverse harem anime of 2017!
4. Sengoku Night Blood
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Oct. 2017 - Dec. 2017
In Hakuouki, you can fall in love with the chivalrous man of the Shinsengumi. Meanwhile in Kamigami no Asobi, you can be together with any Greek god of your choosing. The same goes for Sengoku Night Blood where you are basically surrounded by a bunch of handsome young man from the Sengoku era. Same with the other two anime mentioned earlier, Sengoku Night Blood is originally an otome game made by the collaboration of Otomate, Marvelous, and Kadokawa. You take the role of Yuzuki who finds herself in a parallel world called “Shinga”. She finds out that, along with humans, other unworldly creatures reside in this world. Particularly, vampires and werewolves exist and each warlord is at war with one another. In order to bring peace once again, Yuzuki ventures out to find Himemiko, the protector of the world “Shinga”
Handsome men with cheesy lines? You will surely get those if you watch Sengoku Night Blood! Especially since the voice actors did an amazing job in giving life to their characters. Same with the game, you get a chance to know different warlords or their subordinates intimately. There are so many of them that it’s hard to choose your most favorite! Besides that, the story is very easy to digest since most of the time you get to meet various characters in the show to learn about their past and the reasons why they fight. While it is overflowing with cheesy cliches, the anime is quite entertaining if you look past the plot and just enjoy the interactions between the characters. Think of the show as a mix of Hakuouki and In Another World with My Smartphone.
3. Kenka Banchou Otome (Girl Beats Boys)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Apr. 2017 - Jun. 2017
Most reverse harem heroines are either dull or bland. However, it seems that negative part of the genre is starting to change, and Hinako Nakayama is a true testament to that! The story starts when Hinako “accidentally” bumps into Hikaru Onigashima, the son of a famous yakuza family. To her shock, she finds a reflection of herself and realizes that she has a twin brother. In order to atone for “injuring” her twin brother, Hinako forcefully accepts Hikaru’s request. His request: to enter Shishiku Academy disguised as him and beat the strongest delinquents in the academy to prove the might of the Onigashima family. Fighting isn’t really a problem for Hinako, the hardest part of the whole ordeal is whether she can hide her true gender or not.
The show is quite short, spanning to 8 or 9 minutes per episode. Nonetheless, the show is hilarious! While it is based on an otome game, the anime doesn’t really focus on the romance, rather it centers around Hinako’s adventure as “Hikaru” and her ridiculous interactions with her potential suitors. Each time Hinako fights her way up the ladder, she ends up being friends with her former enemies. It’s a very nice touch because the friendships between her and her former enemies are truly a treat to watch! Still, the best part of Kenka Banchou Otome: Girl Beats Boys is the heroine herself, Hinako. She totally kicks butt and is more level-minded than any character of this show. Hinako certainly shines in this show and that’s how it should be.
2. IDOLiSH7
- Episodes: 17
- Aired: Jan. 2018 - Currently Airing
IDOLiSH7 or i7 for short is a famous visual novel slash rhythm mobile game made by Bandai Namco. The first two episodes of IDOLiSH7 was released in November 2017 and officially started in January 2018 beginning from episode 3. The story revolves around the group IDOLiSH7 as they try to make their name known to the entertainment industry. Together with them is their headstrong manager, Tsumugi Takanashi. Although each member is talented in their own right, they lack that X factor when they are together. What must Tsumugi do to harmonize the unique idols of IDOLiSH7?
While it is a reverse harem anime, it’s quite different than the others on this list. Firstly, there’s no romance in here, although we have a pretty heroine supporting the male cast. The story isn’t really new since there are tons of idol anime that have the same premise as IDOiSH7. Nonetheless, the characters themselves are the reason why the show is worth watching. What is so nice about this anime is that each character falls within a stereotype at the beginning of the series; however, as the show progresses and to its viewers’ shock, there is more to these characters. As expected, the music will not disappoint nor will the funny and lovable interactions among the main cast. The anime does not only show how the entertainment industry works, but it also shows that hard work, determination, and believing in oneself is essential to chase one’s dream!
1. Code:Realize: Sousei no Himegimi (Code:Realize ~Guardian of Rebirth~)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Oct. 2017 - Dec. 2017
Cardia Beckford is feared by many because of her unique ability to melt whatever she touches. Seemingly accepting her fate of living in isolation, a handsome gentleman thief by the name of Arsène Lupin comes to her rescue. Along with Lupin, she meets Victor Frankenstein, a famous researcher; Impey Barbicane, a creative inventor; Saint-Germain, an enigmatic noble; and Abraham Van Helsing, an expert shooter and fighter. With these amazing people surrounding her, will she finally be able to find who she really is?
Now, this is one reverse harem anime that you will certainly enjoy! The artwork is nicely done and the voice acting is also a reason to watch this lovely anime. While it has few romance scenes in it, the show mainly focuses on Cardia’s true identity. Besides that, the premise and the worldbuilding are very interesting. While it may not be a perfect adaptation of the game, it still delivers and is very entertaining overall. Surely, you will fall in love with the male characters since most of them are charming and extremely gorgeous as well!
Final Thoughts
All of these anime are merely long advertisements to entice newcomers to the series. Still, these kinds of adaptations are not bad since you get an introduction to the series and they can add some things or information that were missed in the games.
