Fall is a time of year where we pull out our scarves and jackets and prepare for the cold of winter under a canopy of changing leaves. Though it may not be a season inherently associated with love, past season saw the release of a number of memorable anime series featuring romantic themes.
With all the thrilling action and fantasy releases packed full of magical creatures and edge of your seat battles, these titles may have flown under your radar. Despite them being less numerous, the best anime containing romance this fall season are nothing to sleep on.
5) Shinmai Maou Keiyakusha Burst
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: October 10, 2015 - December 12, 2015
Basara Tojo is an ordinary high school student. His average light is disrupted when of nowhere, his father decides to adopt two girls, his new sisters Mio and Maria. However, things soon get even more complicated - they find themselves entangled in the supernatural when a demon realm surfaces. Pretty soon the trials and tribulations of school and family life seem inconsequential in comparison.
This show has an interesting plot, and a little healthy dose of everything from comedy and action, to fan service. This harem fantasy anime contains just the right amount of romance as well between the protagonist Basara and the other characters, putting it in the ranking for the top shows of this season.
4) Comet Lucifer
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: October 4, 2015 - December 20, 2015
Comet Lucifer is set in a world where stunning blue crystals called Gifdium are central to existence. The story focuses on a boy named Sougo, who lives in a town where mining these gems is an economic and cultural staple. Sougo has a fascination with these crystals, and his explorations lead him to meet a strange girl named Felia in the depths of an abandoned mine and their adventures together begin.
For starters, the series is a feast for the eyes - the crisp animation is a treat. This fantasy series has interesting, creative characters. Their development is extensive in this season, however, so if you’re looking for a lighter show this might be decent to pick up in between series. Though not explicitly a romance series, the dynamic between Sougo and Felia is a pleasure to watch, and enough to put Comet Lucifer on this list.
3) Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: October 3, 2015 - December 19, 2015
This series is set in a world where gladiators fight battles with magical weapons crafted from their souls. Ikki Kurogane is considered a failure in his clan. He isn't a particularly good knight - but despite being berated for his lack of abilities, he is willing to work hard to become stronger. Things begin to take off when he is challenged to a duel where the stakes are high - the loser sacrifices their free will.
This series is in a similar vein to Shinmai Maou Keiyakusha Burst. It is first and foremost a fantasy series, with healthy doses of other elements. However, it offers something a bit more substantial in the way of romance. The chemistry between the two protagonists of the series is enjoyable to watch, and lands this series a spot on this list.
2) Shomin Sample
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: October 7, 2015 to December 23, 2015
Deep in the forest there is an elite private girl's school. The students there are completely unexposed to the outside world, and because of this have a hard time functioning in it after they graduate. The administration has come up with an innovative way to remedy this problem. The decide to kidnap a boy from the outside, and have him set an example to the girls at the school. Kagurazaka Kimito is selected, and his life is about to get very, very interesting.
This show is fun to watch, though relatively predictable. What happens when a boy is introduced to a school full of sheltered young women is pretty much exactly what you would expect. Shomin Sample is primarily a harem series - however the romantic and sexual tension that ensues earns it a spot in this list.
1) Dance with Devils
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: October 7, 2015 - Dec 23, 2015
Ritsuka Tachibana finds herself in the center of an age old conflict between devils and vampires. Each side wants her for their own, believing she possesses the key to unlocking a secret that will allow them to control the world. The trouble is, she is totally clueless - but with so much at stake, this will do nothing to stop them from trying.
The male characters in this reverse harem anime are gorgeous bishounen, so naturally there are sparks that fly between Ritsuka and the demons that surround her. They are not above using wiles and charm to achieve their means, and the electrifying chemistry that ensues earns Dances with Devils a spot on this list.
This season didn’t offer much in way of traditional love stories, but there were a variety of series featuring romance released in Fall of 2015. If fantasy harem series are up your alley, this was a season not to be missed. If there were series that you feel should have made the cut but didn’t, feel free to post them in the comments below!
