Black Clover Preview (No Spoilers)
Despite living in a world where magic is the most important part of a person’s status, Asta has absolutely no magic at all! An orphan along with his friend/rival Yuno at a small village’s church, Asta has always dreamed of becoming the Wizard King one day. To follow both their dreams, he and Yuno must face a lot of adversity and trials along the way, but their unique abilities will draw the attention of new allies, as well as dangerous enemies…
Asta Highlights (Spoilers Beyond This Point)
1. Embraces His Faults
Asta has been an underdog his whole life, growing up a magicless orphan in a small village. Despite being treated poorly for most of his life, Asta never once pretends to be something he is not. He acknowledges that he may not have the most powerful abilities or be the strongest Magic Knight in the Clover Kingdom, but he continues to strive for his goals regardless! Asta takes the criticism of others in stride, as he works toward his dream of becoming the Wizard King in his own way.
2. Treats Others With Respect
Even though he is treated as an inferior by most everyone he meets, Asta tries to be kind to others. Part of this stems from his naivety—growing up in a small village isolated from the majority of civilization did not help Asta learn much about the world! And unfortunately for Asta, the rest of the world is not as kind as he might hope they would be. Yet he remains respectful of people, as it is part of his nature to treat others fairly and to fight with honor against his opponents.
3. Has a Positive Outlook on Life
Possibly because of his naivety, Asta tends to view life in a very positive manner. He has been given little, having to work hard and against all odds to achieve his goals, especially with his lack of magic skills. Yet he never complains about his situation, using his strengths to speak for him as he meets new people along the way. Asta extends this positive outlook to others, believing in his friends and their abilities as well. He never gets down on himself or bemoans his place in the world, instead doing what he can to prove his worth.
4. Strives Toward His Goals, But Wants Everyone to Reach Theirs
Even as Asta works hard to achieve his dream of becoming the Wizard King, he wants to help his friends with their dreams as well. When Noelle is struggling to refine her magic control for their trek to the Underwater Temple, Asta does everything he can to encourage her. He also completely entrusts himself to Finral and Vanessa’s abilities during their fight with Vetto, not even doubting for a second that his teammates will be able to carry him through! In a group of misfits like the Black Bulls, Asta’s support and trust of his teammates goes a long way toward shaping the group into a much stronger whole.
5. Literally, He Does Not Give Up!
Asta has shown that time and again he will continue to persevere, no matter what happens. From the beginning of his journey, he tells those rooting against him that he will not give up—and he continues to (loudly!) tell the naysayers this same fact throughout the series. When Asta’s arms are badly injured in the fight with Vetto, he continues to fight on, using whatever means necessary to keep facing off against his foe. And when the Black Bulls discover that his arms may never fully heal again, Asta doesn’t despair for a second, instead proclaiming that this is just another way fate has stacked against him. He will not give up for anything that might happen along his journey, and it is truly inspiring!
Final Thoughts
Asta may have started Black Clover off as an annoying, loudmouthed protagonist, but he has actually grown on us during the series, showing off plenty of great character traits. He does not deny his weaknesses, instead focusing a positive and respectful eye on his and his allies’ strengths, working toward his goal with a dogged determination that we love!
