Demi-chan wa Kataritai is shot from the perspective of teacher Tetsuo Takahashi as he works in a high school as the biology teacher. Well, he teaches science but he is really interested in Demi-humans who, in recent years, have integrated into society. There are even government organizations introduced to help support them in their daily lives. Demi-humans come in a few different varieties and the ones we meet in the series are Hikari, a Vampire, Kyouko, a Dullahan, Sakie, a fellow teacher and Succubus, and Yuki, a Yuki Onna (snow woman). Tetsuo, at first, is interested in studying them but encounters their personalities as well as idiosyncrasies that make them unique. Together, he hilariously helps to not under understand them, but get through those awkward years of high school.
If anything, Demi-chan wa Kataritai is quickly becoming the breakout star of the season. Sure we have Ao no Exorcist and KonoSuba both returning, but we already like those. Demi-chan is rapidly drawing us in with both humor and oddly heartwarming moments. It’s time though for us to take a look at six shows that are just like it. Some you will know, and some you will not. Let’s go!

1. Jitsu wa Watashi wa (Actually, I am...)
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: July 2015 – September 2015
Asahi Kuromine is walking through the school one afternoon looking for something when he stumbles upon Youko Shiragami. The thing is, though, is that she is a vampire! He hilariously tries to cover for her while not blabbing. However, it does not stop there as there is a slew of other supernatural creatures in the school! Asahi comes into contact with each of them while trying to deal with a sadistic demon of a principal who, in a fit of rage to eat something delicious, tries to make a meteor fall to earth to obliterate it. Can he keep inquiring minds at bay while dealing with a psychic principal, and somehow, win Youko’s, heart? Here he goes!
Jitsu wa Watashi wa, much like Demi-chan, has supernatural beings attending school in a human world with the main character of the series, being just a simple human. This often leads to hilarious misunderstandings as well as the main characters often are not thinking things all the way through Some obvious other parallels are that it is set in a high school, both Youko and Hikari are vampires, and both series are set up as Slice of Life, but also tend to dabble in comedy and harem. While Demi-chan is not a full harem, it does have its moments where of all people, Sakie, the succubus, is the most forward.

2. Yozakura Quartet: Hana no Uta
- Episodes: 13
- Volumes:October 2013 – December 2013
Yozakura Quartet is an anime that few under many people’s radars in Fall 2013. It is an alternative to the original Yozakura Quartet which is a masterpiece that aired in 2009. Set in a town where demons and humans cohabitate, there is a special division that handles these issues. It is known as the Kiizumi Life Counseling Office and there, a group of four teenagers work together to try and solve issues from the ordinary to the supernatural. For those instances, Akina Hiizumi is able to “tune” youkai and send them back to where they come from. He is joined by Hime, an orange scarf-touting young girl who is actually also the mayor of the city, Kotoba, who is half-human and half-youkai, and Ao, a clairvoyant youkai who has a brother bent on evil. Together they work hard to protect the town.
Yozakura and Demi-chan both shoot from the angle of having the supernatural and humans living together. Demi-chan has humor, while Yozakura Quartet has action and magic. Hime is Kyouko, Kotoba is Hikari, and Ao is Yuki when thinking about their personalities. There is a rather large amount of peace enjoyed and we do not see the humans and youkai coming into much, if any, conflict which leads to a rather interesting mix-up. It is safe to say that Yozakura Quartet and Demi-chan feel like the other but set in alternative settings!

Strangely, though, Vignette, a friend of hers and a demon, gets her to come to school. Reluctantly she goes but then meets Raphiel, her second to Gabriel’s first while they were in heaven. Satanichia, a tsundere from hell who wants to be the queen of hell also joins up with them too for a quartet of comedy. Gabriel is a slob, Vignette is the mother character, Satanichia is an idiot who will believe almost anything, and Raphiel looks sweet but is a monster of a sadist. Somehow they survive day to day while much at Satanichia’s expense.
Gabriel DropOut is essentially Demi-chan wa Kataritai with one less character as there are no males in this series. Both series are pure Slice of Life with enough comedy and supernatural elements to keep you coming back for more. Both series also portray a high school setting. True, Demi-chan has more, but that is not to the demerit of Gabriel DropOut. Each of the girls in both series have very widely reaching personalities as well which contributes to a fun dynamic while watching. Check out the PV below for more!

However, they cannot do anything to him as the law prevents them from having sex with him. However, if he marries them, then they can. Suddenly it is an all-out competition for his heart.
Monster Musume has a wide variety of cast and characters that are reflected as well in Demi-chan. True, the girls in MM are more of the monster variety and Demi-chan has supernatural beings, but the feeling is still the same hilariously. No monster is quite like the other and while Demi-chan does not have a blatant harem element like MM, it is very clear that all of the Demi-girls want Tetsuo much like the monster girls want Kimihito. Demi-chan does not have the ecchi scenes like MM, but it does enjoy comedic moments that are born from borderline ecchi moments. Check out the PV and add it to your queue if you have not already!

5. Rosario to Vampire
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: Jan 2008 – Mar 2008
Bu-du bu-du bada bada bah! Rosario To Vampire is about Youkai Academy, a boarding school for supernatural creatures! These “monsters” are here to learn academically as well as how to live among humans and avoid detection. There is one golden rule about the academy: If you find a human, you must kill it on sight! Tsukune Aono is a rather boring guy who somehow accidentally gets enrolled at the academy. He meets Moka Akashiya, the hottest girl in school who is also a vampire. After joining classes, Tsukune now has to worry about not only Moka who seems to have an interest in him, but a succubus, a Yuki Onna (ice woman), and even a witch is suddenly after his heart! But can he keep his secret a secret and not get killed?
Rosario to vampire is basically the ecchi version of Demi-chan and is akin to Monster Musume to Iru Nichijou. The difference here being that Tsukune is a rather drawl protagonist, while Tetsuo is rather stand-up and stand-out. Though, he really should not be asking so many inappropriate questions to the girls as well as hugging them. There, of course, are other girls throughout Rosario to Vampire that are interesting, but the main four are after Tsukune just like the girls are slowly starting to warm up to Tetsuo. Both anime are set in high schools and enjoy a good amount of comedy mixed with their other respective genres. Rosario to Vampire is a classic and you must see it if you have not yet! He is sent with them. He travels through to find a society brimming with other fictional, at least to him, races such as elves, dark elves, magicians, gods among men, and more! What is this supernatural world that he has been sent to, to establish peace!? Can he do it?
Much like how we talked about how Yozakura Quartet being just like Demi-chan but with action, that is what GATE is. If you subtract the comedy but add action, you have a mixing of genres that works together to tell a fantastic story. True, we have not seen the demi girls fight, but maybe there will be a special OVA for that? GATE has sprinkles of slice of life moments while it keeps the story moving. Itami also, much like Tetsuo, has girls clamoring for him while also being surrounded by them and is slightly older in appearance than they are. There is also the heavy dose of harem even though the series will not come out and admit it.
