Demi-chan wa Kataritai Introduction and Story (Spoilers)

The plot starts off with a setting in a world where demi-humans and humans exist or rather co-exists in present day Japan. In the first episode of Demi-chan wa Kataritai (Interviews with Monster Girls), we are introduced to the cool, calm and collected biology teacher Tetsuo Takahashi, who have taken in an interest with the so-called, “Demi-humans”. He was then introduced to a number of Demi-humans (or Demi for short) as the series progresses, such as the air-headed, happy-go-lucky vampire Hikari Takanashi, the “damn erotic” teacher Sakie Satou, and much more!

As Tetsuo finds out more about Demi from his students, he then tries to help them along the way, as things aren’t as easy as it seemed or thought out to be. It’s heart-warming to see the effort and dedication Satou has shown for Demi, as he genuinely wants to help them adjust to the unforgiving world.

What You Liked About Demi-chan wa Kataritai

This series is surprisingly fresh, it introduces new characters each with unique contrasting personalities. And the atmosphere of the settings and interactions of one character with the next really highlights the comedy part of this show overall. It’s very cute when you see nutty characters like Hikari blends in with Kyouko Machi and Yuki Kusakabe so perfectly. You can see it during their interactions.

It’s truly fun to watch and the fanservice isn't too extreme to the point where it destroys the plot and the characters. Demi-chan wa Kataritai also gives a fresh and fun different point of view to the Demi. It steers away from the stereotypical traits but not too far off that it sounded too ridiculous. The series depicted their traits in a somewhat familiar way that viewers and fans could relate to without having to spoil the essence of fun out of it.

The entire series is based on Tetsuo Takahashi learning to understand more about the Demi, how they are adjusting their lives as Demi in a world that favours humans and helping them on the way.

The characters facial expressions were animated in a cute and fun way as well, and although it might not make you laugh, it’d still be able to make you have a stupid grin plastered on your face as you watch the series.

Discussion Time

Demi-chan wa Kataritai does give you that good old slice-of-life vibe to it and delivered them in a way that is interesting to watch and relate to. This undoubtedly earned this series some major points but are the cast of characters very limited? Does it suffer the steady decline of excitement and fun as the series progresses, as with other slice-of-life anime?

It’s still a decent series with precious moments where it’s heartfelt, or funny, or even at times, plain out cringe worthy.

1. Good Character Development

This point comes off natural, you start from the main teacher Tetsuo Takahashi and his curiosity towards Demi. Over the course of the series, he met 3 students who were Demi and learned a lot about their struggles along the way. You can see in the first few episodes of the series, Tetsuo was filled with curiosity regarding Demi and how they live their lives, as well as debunking the stereotypes of their respective types of Demi.

As the series progresses, Tetsuo becomes genuinely caring and interested in helping the Demi perceive their lives, as it comes to his realization that the amount of trouble the Demi need to went through just to get by in the world where their species is in the minority is ridiculous. It’s also how his personality and actions able to capture that heart-warming atmosphere that this series is popular for.

2. Interesting and Relatable Problems in the Plot

If there are reasons to watch this anime, this entry would definitely be one of the main reasons why. The problems that have been encountered by the Demi are somewhat similar to the problems that we encounter in real life. How the minority struggles to survive in this world. How racism, bullying are evidently happening to those who are in the minority. The way the characters handle it in the anime is also somewhat realistic, resulting this anime receiving major points from the anime community.

It’s always a good thing to see such a serious issue being represented in a fun and refreshing way, yet not diminishing the seriousness of the issue itself.

3. Chemistry between Characters and Voice Acting

Overall, the appeal of this series lies in the cast of the characters and their unique personalities. Each of the characters were paired with contrasting personalities, and when they are faced with a situation, their interactions with each other become a very nice chemistry and that’s what made this series so fun to watch.

The voice actors also did a splendid job on their character roles, as they are able to breathe life into the characters and make them enjoyable to watch for the anime community.

1. Plot Continuation

While I have boasted why the plot have become one of the main selling points of this anime, it also acts as a double-edged sword. As with the previous paragraphs I’ve stated, this anime might suffer from the same problem most slice-of-life anime would suffer; No clear goal/ending plot.

The first episodes might be interesting but towards the end of the series, it has no clear goal/plot making this series lose its appeal to the fans. Because of this, anime fans might not be able to survive the series till the end as it gets boring.

2. Cast of Characters

Although the characters have been a strong point in this series, it becomes questionable as to why there isn’t male Demi that could’ve been one of Tetsuo Takahashi’s student so it adds diversity to the characters and made it that more interesting. It is also a shame that with all the main characters were girls it gives off an ecchi/harem vibe while the series showcased very minimal of those traits. I mean if you’re going for slice-of-life type of drama why not put more characters into it to add flavour?

Final Thoughts

Overall, Demi-chan wa Kataritai is a breath of fresh air. The characters are fun, their personalities contrast each other very well. It’s similar to watching an anime sit-com, to be honest. The amount of ecchi/harem is minimal which is good, as it didn’t destroy what the series is essentially about: the psychological behaviour and interactions between humans and Demi. To top it off, even though the ending plot is lacking appeal, at least the characters saved the series in the end.

The genuine personality of Tetsuo Takahashi has successfully made the series into a heart-warming one. To see the depth of his relationship with his students and the amount of effort he puts out for his students shows how devoted he is. You can see his efforts bear fruit, as apparently those 3 demi students of his really took a liking towards him. Basically, how he broke down barriers to communicate and understand his demi students (minority) is a beautiful thing to watch.
