The 5 Best Romance Anime of 2020 [Best Recommendations]

The world this 2020 needed reasons to go aww and make other cute sound effects. Thankfully, romance anime was here for all of us to keep us crying and laughing over anime-themed issues and not real ones. 2020 didn’t have hundreds of romance anime to choose from but there were some truly amazing titles that we here at Honey’s Anime fell in love with and we wanted to share our 5 favorites. Grab some candles, a partner/significant other, and let’s dive into a romance filled list!

5. Kanojo, Okarishimasu (Rent-a-Girlfriend)

Rent-a-Girlfriend seems like the shallowest idea ever and we almost didn’t want to watch it when it aired in the summer. However, Rent-a-Girlfriend turned out to be one of the funnier rom-com/harems we’ve seen in some time. Watching our main man Kazuya Kinoshita try to juggle between having a bevy of girls to choose from and wondering who he’d finally choose was a truly engaging concept. Rent-a-girlfriend surprised many of us otaku by delivering a heartwarming story that really examined the themes of love and how it can be both complex and truly simple.

4. Kimi to Boku no Saigo no Senjou, Aruiwa Sekai ga Hajimaru Seisen (Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World)

Hands down one of the coolest romance series to air in 2020 would go to Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World. Taking a page from the forever loved Romeo and Juliet, Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World has two characters from opposing sides—Iska and Alice—who end up trying to get closer together but finding that isn’t the easiest task in the world…especially when you’re again on warring sides. Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World didn’t reinvent the wheel when it comes to romance anime but that doesn’t stop it from being a solid romance/action/supernatural series and we recommend anime viewers giving it a try!

3. Fruits Basket 2nd Season

Tooru Honda hasn’t been the only person wrestling with her emotions as she tries to debate who she should fall in love with in Fruits Basket. Us anime viewers have also been clutching pillows and crying watching our female lead debate who should be her main squeeze. Kyou Souma has the looks but also his attitude and Yuki has his cool refined personality but who is the perfect match for our Tooru?! Fruits Basket 2nd Season continues our rollercoaster of emotions and adds some new ones as Tooru faces even more drama when a big new threat appears. We loved Fruits Basket 2nd season and constantly were enthralled by the way this season handles romance and character development. The cast has definitely grown over the years and its why choosing one man for our Tooru hasn’t been easy.

2. Tonikaku Kawaii (TONIKAWA: Over the Moon For You)

Many shows—like 90 Day Finance—seem so unrealistic just because it seems unbelievable love can be found in such a small time frame. Then TONIKAWA: Over the Moon For You comes into our anime playlists and we soon realize…love can be quickly made. The idea of having a car accident and finding love seems something only an anime can make possible but that’s the enjoyment behind TONIKAWA: Over the Moon For You. Despite the riculouss set up, TONIKAWA: Over the Moon For You is filled with endearing love themes like that awkwardness of a new partner and trying to find that middle ground when two lovers have differing tastes. We already miss our couple—Nasa and Tsukasa Yuzaki—but hope their love will continue…and give us a second season.

1. Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Kan (My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Climax!)

Twitter, Instagram, and Anime Amino communities worldwide were truly focused on one particular romantic pairing from the world of anime and it wasn’t Subaru and Emilia. My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Climax was finally going to conclude with our Hachiman Hikigaya choosing between either Yukino Yukinoshita or Yui Yuigahama and we couldn’t bite our nails any harder. The entire third season of My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU was constantly giving us red herrings as to who Hachiman would choose and we died weekly waiting for that choice. Yes, shows like the Bachelor/Bachelorette can make you anxious wondering who the final rose will be given to but My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Climax was the ultimate romance dilemma weekly and in the end, we know some otaku out there were dying inside from Hachiman’s choice. Did you agree with Hachiman? You should use those comments below to let us know which girl Hachiman should have chosen.

Hey everyone I’m Aaron Curbelo or Blade as I’m called by my YouTube Subscribers. I’ve been an anime/manga fan since I was a young kid. In terms of anime I have watched nearly a thousand shows and have read hundreds of manga series. I love writing and honestly was so happy to join Honey’s Anime to get a shot to write articles for such a wonderful site. I’m a firm believer in respect in the anime community being the most important embodiment we should all have. We all love anime and we have varying opinions of series but we should respect one another for those differences! Life is too precious to spend it making needless arguments in a community that should be the shining example of loving an amazing medium. I hope as a writer for Honey’s Anime I can bring you folks some amazing articles to read and enjoy!
