What Makes Spy x Family Such a Fun Anime to Watch?

There are so many great anime in this Spring 2022 season, such as Shikimori's Not Just A Cutie, Tomodachi Game, Summer Time Rendering, etc. There are also some good sequels such as Kingdom, The Rising of Shield Hero, Komi Can't Communicate, and several others. However, the most fun series out of them all is definitely Spy x Family.

Spy x Family is an adaptation of Tatsuya Endo's manga with the same name. It is a story about a fake family consisting of a spy father (Loid Forger), an assassin mother (Yor Forger), and an esper daughter (Anya Forger). The most important thing is the fact that other than the daughter who can read people's minds, nobody knows the real identity of each other. So how can this bizarre situation turn into such a fun anime to watch?

The Secret Identities

There's always something deeply fascinating about people who lead a double life. We as a viewer seem to love the idea of someone ordinary who secretly has an extraordinary life. After all, that is pretty much the reason why we love spy movies and superhero stories so much.

In the daytime, Loid Forger is a psychiatrist in the Berlint General Hospital, while Yor Forger is a clerk working in Berlint City Hall. However, whenever they get a mission, Loid becomes Twilight, the most accomplished spy in the history of Westalis, while Yor becomes the Thorn Princess, the deadliest assassin in the underground world.

That sudden transition from ordinary to extraordinary, from light to dark, and from common to special, excites the viewers in the same way as whenever we see Peter Parker open up his shirt to reveal the spider suit and jump into the sky.

The Family Dynamic

Whether it's a superhero who can fly into the sky, a spy with his clever gadgets or an assassin with her deadly technique, all of them are the concept that is so far removed from our everyday life. After all, what are the chances that you will meet any one of them in your lifetime? Extremely low, right? So how can a story that depicts characters that are so much different than the audience manage to instill a sense of relatability and familiarity?

The answer is family. We all may not be super spies or dangerous assassins, but we do have a family. By framing the story of such bizarre characters into the familiar concept of a family, the viewers will instantly find a commonality between us and the characters.

After all, there are times when we wish we had the ability to read our parents' minds like Anya. Every father out there will understand the hardship of being a good dad for their child, just like what Loid is going through in the story. And every mother will be able to relate to Yor's exaggerated reaction whenever she sees her daughter in danger, even if it turns out to be a false alarm. This kind of family dynamic is what makes it so easy for us to care and feel connected to the characters in Spy x Family.

The Combination of Fast-Paced Action and Hilarious Comedy

One of the most important elements of a great story is the pacing. It is one of the things that dictates when we have to feel tense and excited, or when we have to sit back, relax, and pay attention to what the characters are talking about. It's a bit like the rhythm in a song. Dance music makes us want to move our bodies while lo-fi music is all about calm and enjoying the vibe.

That being said, the best pacing works like a roller coaster. There are times when the ride goes fast, but there are also times when it moves slowly. That analogy is also true for music. After all, even the most energetic dance music will have its quiet moments when it builds up the anticipation.

Whenever Loid and Yor are on a mission, be it to infiltrate a crime organization or to kill a political figure, the anime becomes a thrilling spectacle with fast-paced action sequences. However, when they just stay at home to interact with Anya, everything feels calm and wholesome, with a healthy dose of hilarious comedy thrown in between. This ebb and flow happen seamlessly within the same episode that is literally keeping us awake in anticipating what would happen next.

Final Thoughts

There are lots of great anime out this season, but if you want to have the maximum amount of fun-watching experience, then you should definitely check out Spy x Family. This is an anime that will entertain your brain to the point that you won't even realize that you've been binge-watching four episodes and now you have to wait for a whole week to watch the next one.
