Introduction

With the Winter 2019 season gone and we've had time to reflect, we decided it is time to take a look back at the shows that were on air. While there were many Fantasy & Supernatural anime that aired from January to March, one thing is for sure: there was no shortage of anime for these two genres. This article isn’t going to review the anime themselves. If you’re looking for a full review of the show, then be sure to search the site for them! This article is more to look at how the original introductions from the official Japanese websites in this article, stand up with what we actually got. Sometimes we get the old bait-and-switch, and other times, we end up with something that was much better than expected. Regardless, let’s take a look at all of them!

1. Boogiepop and Others (2019)

What We Got:

In an unusually supernatural town, students from high school find their lives intertwined with a dangerous future. One girl, Miyashita Touka, has a strange alternate personality, brought here to protect the world from danger. Boogiepop is a legend, though no one is really certain where the being comes from or why they appear. There are all sorts of mysteries out there, and plenty of dangers that come along with them as well. Otherworldly beings can either bring protection for humanity, or disaster. And sometimes, the most dangerous creatures are a part of humanity itself…

In a series of stories told from the perspectives of different people, we are able to slowly unravel the mysteries that surround this world and the relationships of the people in it. Each arc of lasts a few episodes, introducing us to the viewpoint of brand-new characters each time. Only a few will remain constant throughout the anime, providing a pinpoint for us to place each tale in the wider world. The stories are told backwards, moving from one individual person to a bigger picture, but they all ask one thing—what is the truth of humanity’s nature?

2. Dororo

  • Genres: Historical, Drama, Supernatural, Action
  • Air Date: January 7 2019

The time is the Warring States Era.

Kagemitsu is the head of a country experiencing nirvana and at a hall within a certain temple, he prays to twelve fierce god statues for territorial prosperity. In exchange for his wish to be granted, Kagemitsu’s heir was born with a disabled body. An unwanted child, he was set adrift on a river to be thrown away.

Time has marched on and Kagemitsu’s agreement with the fierce gods has been realized: peace has arrived for the country. Then one day, a child bandit named Dororo meets a certain man… but is he human or devil...?

‘Hyakkimaru’ has a sword embedded in both of his arms and his entire body has been altered. With his unseeing eyes, he focuses on the monsters coming to attack.

What We Got:

Daigo Kagemitsu is desperate for anything to revitalize the lands he controls. With his wife about to give birth to their first son, Kagemitsu heads for a shrine, initiating a pact with 12 demons to bring him power. The demons grant him power, but at a cost—they take all of the organs from his newborn son, even his very skin. Yet the boy still lives! Kagemitsu cares little for this child, ordering that he be drowned in the river. Through a series of kindnesses, the child survives and grows up with a local man who makes prosthetic limbs, which grants the unfortunate boy a chance at life…

Now grown, Hyakkimaru sets out to defeat each of the 12 demons who took his organs as their sacrifice. With each victory, he earns back one small part of himself. Along the way, he is accompanied by an orphan named Dororo, whose bright personality belies the dangers the child has already faced. The two make their way through the harsh, unforgiving world, seeking what they have lost.

3. Endro~

  • Genres: Slice of Life, Adventure, Fantasy
  • Air Date: January 13 2019

My name is Yuusha and I’m unemployed ♪.
Naral Island is a large continent where both humans and monsters, as well as magic and weapons exist. There is also the terrifying Demon King who exists. Long, long ago, the first generation of heroes defeated the Demon King who appeared on Naral Island. Since then, the Demon King has come back to life over and over again only to have the heroes appear yet again in resistance. Girls attend an adventurers school where they wait for the reappearance of the Demon King one day.

Yuusha is a bit of an airhead but is a bona fide hero.
Seira is the Elf saint who is a bit too serious and whose troubles never end.
Fai is a bright warrior who loves to eat.
Mei is a very quiet wotaku mage.

Aiming to be the next four-hero party, they don’t appear that they will be ready to defeat the Demon King ever.

What We Got:

On Naral Island, the tale is always the same… A Demon Lord appears. The famed Hero and their party rise to fight them and defeat them. The Demon Lord is resurrected and therefore, so is the Hero. Yuusha and her friends are the latest reiteration of this tradition, and their journey leads them to the heart of the Demon Lord’s castle. Despite their best efforts, they are still struggling, until Yuusha decides to recite a dangerous magic spell, resulting in the defeat of the Demon Lord—but also resulting in the turning back of time!

Mao, the Demon Lord, sets up as the new teacher for Yuusha’s past adventure school, though she soon comes to find that her plan to thwart the young Hero is not as easily executed as she thought. Yuusha, Seira, Fai, and Mei are a unique adventuring party, each with their own strengths and vices. The group spends their time learning how to become Heroes, and Mao finds she is growing to enjoy their company. In the end, does the Hero really need the Demon Lord, or is it the Demon Lord who needs the Hero?

4. Fairy Tail Final Season

  • Genres: Fantasy, Action, Adventure, Magic
  • Air Date: October 7 2018

Take the path you believe in while proudly carrying the memories of your friends!
Time has passed for Natsu after the intense fighting with the dark guild Tartaros, as well as the painful farewell with the being who raised him like its own, Igneel, the Fire Dragon. Natsu has now decided that he should become even stronger, and so he sets out on a journey to train with his buddy Happy.

At the same time, the Guild Master for Fairy Tail, Makarov, suddenly gave orders for the guild to disband before disappearing himself.

One year later… Lucy is working as an assistant to a reporter while sending information across the large continent to all of their former allies. Then one day while she’s out gathering information on the annual Grand Magic Games, Natsu appears in front of Lucy having returned from his training! They decide to revive Fairy Tail, and with their hearts as one, Natsu, Lucy, and Happy all set out on a journey to search for their former allies!

What We Got:

Natsu and his friends have been spread across the world of Fiore after Fairy Tail’s disbandment, but Natsu has not given up on reuniting with his Fairy Tail family. After running into Lucy once more, they decide to gather all of the old members and rebuild the guild! Gradually, they recover more of their friends, but not all of them are easy to find. Makarov has vanished into thin air, and the group soon discovers that he has been taken prisoner by the Alvarez Empire. Battling enemies along the way, the renewed Fairy Tail heads out to find their old Guild Master. But the Alvarez Empire is more dangerous than they could expect, and their emperor is someone Natsu and his friends are familiar with…

Will our Fairy Tail heroes be able to overcome the Empire and its infamous Spriggan 12 elite warriors? Once again, their bonds are put to the test!

5. Fukigen na Mononokean 2nd Season

  • Genres: Supernatural, Comedy
  • Air Date: January 5 2019

This is the 2nd Season of Fukigen na Mononokean (The Morose Mononokean)

‘Youkaibarai’ is a job that involves escorting supernatural spirits that for some reason have come to the human world back to the realm of the dead.

One day Hanae Ashiya, a high schooler who is being followed by a spirit, visits Mononokean, a Youkaibarai store that he happened to find the contact information for.

There, he meets the miserable-looking owner, Haruitsuki Abeno.

Due to certain circumstances, Ashiya ends up working part-time at Mononokean…

And so begins the tale of Abeno and Ashiya, the Yokaibarai duo.

What We Got:

When Hanae Ashiya stumbled into Haruitsuki Abeno’s Mononokean tea room, his life was forever changed. He remains Abeno’s humble employee, helping him to exorcise yokai in the mundane world and send them back to the Underworld. Though they face opposition and difficulties at times, the two still press on, fulfilling their duty to restore yokai to their homeland of the Underworld. Ashiya continues to meet many interesting yokai, and sees the similarities between humanity and the yokai. Between all the silly and fun moments, he also finds out that his own family has more experience with yokai than he had first dreamed! Abeno and Ashiya set out to find the truth behind Ashiya’s parentage, though it will not be anything they could have expected!

6. GeGeGe no Kitarou

  • Genres: Fantasy, Horror, Comedy
  • Air Date: April 1 2018

Welcome to the current era, somewhere around the 20th year of the 21st century, where humanity has completely forgotten about the existence of youkai (demons).

There are phenomenon frequently occurring that science cannot explain, and adults are going every which way as rumors fly wild.

A 13-year-old girl named Mana has decided to do something about it and writes a letter and puts it in the youkai mailbox. What appears in front of Mana with the clip clop sounds echoing of his geta (Japanese wooden clogs) is none other than Kitarou of GeGeGe.

What We Got:

People have forgotten the existence of yokai in the current 21st Century, but the world is becoming inundated with unexplainable phenomena. Adults from all walks of life are confused by the events. However, 13-year-old Mana Inuyama takes matters into her own hands, writing a letter to the Yokai Post. She soon meets Gegege no Kitarou, the last living member of the Ghost tribe.

As they move along on their journey, Mana, Kitarou and their crew meet a variety of different yokai, each with their own story to tell. The anime doesn’t treat these yokai just as silly creatures, giving them more depth and meaning as they are related to modern day society. This group of friends will go on many adventures, and learn a lot more about themselves along the way!

7. Kemono Friends 2nd Season

  • Genres: Fantasy, Adventure
  • Air Date: January 8 2019

This is the 2nd Season of Kemono Friends.

In the gigantic integrated zoo Japari Park, animals change to a human-like appearance because of the mysterious substance called Sand Star and become Animal Girls! Many people visit the zoo and have fun, but one day…

A lost girl comes to the zoo. Wanting to go back where she came from, she embarks on a new adventure, and the other Animal Girls join in!

What We Got:

In Japari Park, the animals are different, being more alike to humans than usual, especially in appearance! Caracal and Serval meet a lost child named Kaban in the forest one day, and the two decide to help Kaban find her way back home. The trio sets out on their trek, meeting many other Friends along the way who help guide them to their next point. Kaban has a sketchbook with pictures of landmarks along the way to continually point them in the right direction.

But the entire journey isn’t as lighthearted or as easy as it seems at first. A group of powerful Ceruleans has appeared out of nowhere and is attacking other Friends, hindering Serval, Caracal and Kaban’s progress. Friends get hurt along the way, and Kaban can’t help but feel responsible for the events. Will she ever be able to find her home?

8. Kemurikusa

  • Genres: Fantasy
  • Air Date: January 9 2019

What We Got:

Sisters Rin, Rina and Ritsu are trying to survive each day in their apocalyptic world, covered in an ominous red fog. On top of this, they also have to fight off red robotic bug-like creatures known as mushi. One fateful day, the sisters discover a large source of water and a human named Wakaba. Wakaba is curious about the world they live in, and through him, we are able to slowly discover answers as to why this world has become the way that it is now. While Wakaba seems to be a rather familiar human figure, the three sisters are more unusual in that they drink large amounts of water, are more acrobatic and use Kemurikusa leaves in order to help them progress in their lives. Though all of their existence is hidden in the questions arisen by the nature of the apocalypse, bit by bit we will learn what the dark past means for the future of this world and its characters.

9. Pastel Memories

  • Genres: Action, Fantasy
  • Air Date: January 8 2019

Akihabara. It is said that this area of Tokyo is the center of otaku culture as well as a holy land. Now though, it has become an array of offices. The memories of manga and anime are fading, and the big-name shops that otaku used to flock to are few in number as most have closed.
The ‘memories’ of works that reside in people’s hearts are what continues to allow this world to exist. However, if a virus is allowed to destroy this land, then everyone’s memories and recollections of these works will disappear.

We fight to protect those precious memories people have of their favorite works!

This is the story of 12 girls who work at a small store that sits in a corner of Akihabara called ‘Usagi Koya Honpo’. They will work hard to defeat viruses and restore Akihabara back to its former glory!

What We Got:

Otaku culture has been deteriorating in Akihabara, which was previously the hub for all things anime, manga or gaming. Standing alone in one corner of town, a small café proclaims its existence in this dying world, as one of the last few places that holds this culture dear. A group of 12 girls helps to keep this café running, often donating their spare time and energy to help others enjoy their favorite memories from otaku culture. But the memories are also deteriorating, and that is not just because of the public’s forgetfulness. A virus has been infecting some of the previously popular franchises, causing people to lose their memories. A villainous woman named Maya is going around into different anime, manga, and games to infect them and people’s fond memories. Who can stand against her?

With their ability to travel into these other worlds and use unique powers, the 12 girls of the café can! Based on the mobile game found only in Japan, this anime adaptation features a variety of adorable characters as they set out to protect the memories from otaku culture. Of course, with elements of anime, manga and games based on real-world counterparts, this is a parody-heavy series!

10. Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari

  • Genres: Fantasy, Action, Isekai
  • Air Date: January 9 2019

His dignity, honor, money, objective…
The hero of the shield had lost everything. What awaits him as he rises from the depths of his despair?

What We Got:

Four heroes are summoned to the kingdom of Melromarc to protect it from the oncoming Waves of enemies. Naofumi Iwotani, the Shield Hero, is confused by the new world at first, but he is starting to get more comfortable with the idea of being a hero when it all goes awry. His fellow heroes turn against him, as does everyone in the kingdom, based on rumors and lies alone. Left alone, he struggles to find a way to fight with only his Shield, as he cannot use any other weapon himself. Naofumi may not be the horrible soul this world has painted him to be, but he is certainly not ready to forgive and forget either… Yet deep down inside, he truly does care about protecting people, something that others are able to see in him when they give him a chance. But will he ever be able to truly trust anyone again?

11. To Aru Majutsu no Index 3rd Season

  • Genres: Fantasy, Action, Supernatural
  • Air Date: October 5 2018

Set in the west of Tokyo, a massive city known as ‘Gakuen Toshi’ (Academy City) sits.

With a population of over 2.3 million people and over 80% of the city being students, a special curriculum has been rolled out to help further develop unique esper abilities. Students all placed into one of six levels of ability ranging from esper level 0 (no ability) to esper level 5.

Touma Kamijou is a high school student who lives alone in Gakuen Toshi. He lives a rather unhappy daily life as the power that resides in his right hand allows him to nullify all other esper attacks and is known as ‘Imagine Breaker.’ Just on the verge of failing, he is given the esper level 0 rank. Then one day while he is on summer break, this girl dressed in all white falls from the sky and changes his life greatly. Her name is Index and she is running from the world of magic. Touma is then drawn into situation after situation due to his encounter and association with her…

What We Got:

Within the Dark Side of Academy City, people are uneasy, beginning to question the truth behind everything. The members of GROUP and ITEM are trying to finally discover the reason for Aleister Crowley’s actions, and what the real connection is between magic and science, especially when it comes to the worlds that support these two seemingly separate entities. Of course, this is the opportunity a dark force was waiting for, when the world is in disarray and distrust. It seems that, for Accelerator, Touma Kamijou, and their friends, the battle never truly ceases, as they must defend the people they care about and prevent the destruction of the world as they know it. Along the way, they will discover truths about the world as a whole, and some of them may even finally find their own meaning to life as the world nears its doom.

12. W'z

Yukiya Araki. Probably 14 years-old.

I usually am DJing somewhere alone. Thanks to my parents influence, I have been listening to house music since I was little. I also upload videos of myself DJing from time to time.

I have something that I want to say. I want to be recognized and wanted, but I am scared of being hurt. But my daily life tends to not be on the same wavelength of others.

One day, I did something in order to increase my views, but now I cannot undo it.

I went live in “that world.”

Now something is coming after me and I am being dragged into a whirlpool of the wishes and feelings of people. I’m in a situation where I cannot do anything on my own... but, if I had someone with me...

What We Got:

Yukiya Araki just wants to be able to share his music with the world in a unique way. Unfortunately, his one-of-a-kind power as a Hand Shaker makes it impossible for him to have contact with anyone, as even the slightest tap will send him to the world of Ziggurat. The events of this series take place 10 years after the original, with many of the main cast returning, though not in the same fighting capacity as before. The Hand Shakers are usually partners, two people striving together toward their goals and fighting in Ziggurat’s strange plane of existence using their deep bond, forged through weapons called “Nimrodes”. Yukiya does not have a wish he wants granted through that world. Yet his fate will not let him be, as others are seeking the power he is able to wield to help in their own fight to get their wishes granted. With pressure coming at him from all sides, Yukiya must figure out what his own desires are, and what he will use as a reason to wield his special powers.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, everything ends in a bit of a unique way. Some gave us what we were promised and others... well... let's just say they won't be getting another season.
