Valentine’s Day is coming up and we thought it best to update our best valentine’s couples. Why? Well, first off a lot of anime dedicate an episode to Valentine’s Day. Secondly, romance is a major factor in anime. In fact, being able to ship characters, whether cannon or not, is one of the greatest pleasures for an anime fan. Deciding whether Haru and Makoto make a better couple than Haru and Rin is practically essential for the anime community to discuss/fight about. Hopefully, you can all agree with the assortment laid out below in this year’s article as well as last year’s, which is just a bit farther down the page. Now, let’s get to discussing which couples reached relationship goals for Valentine’s!
10. Inuyasha and Kagome from Inuyasha
- Episodes: 167
- Aired: Oct. 2000 – Sep. 2004
Inuyasha follows the adventures of the two named above as they try to recover the shards of a powerful crystal that has for the most part fallen into the hands of an extremely dangerous demon, who is actually the compilation of hundreds of demons.
If you’re not familiar with at least one of Rumiko Takahashi’s works then you are missing out on some of the best romance/comedy/adventure anime out there. Her works are staples for most long-term anime fans, or at least anyone born in the 80s and 90s. Though each of her shows have a couple worthy of being on this list, few couples are as renowned and celebrated as that of Kagome and Inuyasha. Why? Well first off, we all love that the two love to anger each other. Inuyasha can be crass and Kagome loves to remind him who’s the boss by telling him to sit. More important that the little things, their love is formed and held onto despite the knowledge that Inuyasha can never escape his feelings for Kiyoko. In some ways, that’s depressing, but in others it shows growth and a deeper connection with Kagome.
9. Madoka & Homura from Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jan. 2011 – Apr. 2011
Okay, so these two might not have gone on any dates, but their love for each other really pushed past the boundaries of the television. The moment that we fully understand Homura’s backstory is the moment our hearts break. First let’s explain the plot, then we’ll get to their amazing love.
Madoka’s journey begins when she and her friend, Sayaka, are approached by a magical being that presents them with an incredible offer. Basically, they will get a wish granted for becoming a magic girl who needs to fight witches. Opting on the side of don’t do it is Homura, a magical girl whose cold attitude doesn’t appeal to Madoka or Sayaka. In the end though, we realize Homura has been repeating a certain chain of events, which involved all her friends dying) time and time again in order to save Madoka It becomes pretty clear that she is willing to go to hell and back to save Madoka. In return for Homura’s display of love and for each of her friends, Madoka sacrifices her life evermore to keep all magic girls safe.
8. Shirayuki & Zen from Akagami no Shirayuki-hime (Snow White with the Red Hair)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jul. 2015 – Sep. 2015
Shirayuki’s life gets flipped upside down when she catches the eye of one prince who desires her as his concubine. To solve this issue she cuts her hair and runs to the forest where another prince happens to save her from the unwanted pursuit. It’s at this point that she dedicates her life to becoming a herbalist in the court of the prince who saved her that day.
There is one thing in particular about Akagami no Shirayuki-hime that makes it so irresistible for lovers of romance. It is in fact one of the few anime romances out there where each person in the couple is in so many ways on the same level as the other. It’s refreshing to have an anime where both characters are able to speak their minds and inherently know that their thoughts deserve to be heard too. So many shows nowadays rely on a character who is so nervous or unconfident that half the plot is focused on their growth. That’s not bad, but it’s a bit overdone.
7. Senjougahara & Araragi from Bakemonogatari
- Episodes: 15
- Aired: Jul. 2009 – Jun. 2010
Bakemonogatari follows the high school trials of one boy who had been bitten by a vampire and was just recently cured, but is still dealing with the side effects. Yes, that is quite a bit to take in, but in fact, all the main characters in Bakemonogatari have such backstories/circumstances.
Despite its harem-like structure, with one boy helping out several girls, Bakemonogatari makes it clear who the main love interest is and that is Senjougahara. Her wit and repertoire of comebacks are endless and they lead to many amazing moments between the two. They serve as a reminder that couples don’t need to be all lovey dovey to form or function. Sometimes it’s the most grating aspect of your crush that you adore the most, because it challenges you and provides you with things to ponder. Oh and let’s not forget that they have the most beautiful date at the end with them watching the stars.
6. Nozaki & Sakura from Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (Monthly Girl’s Nozaki-kun)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Jul. 2014 – Sep. 2014
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun follows the relationship trials of Sakura as she consistently tries to get Nozaki to notice her feelings. The difficulty of this task is apparent from the outset, as Nozaki assumes that Sakura’s declarations of love are compliments towards his work as a manga artist.
This couple is a reminder that perseverance matters when trying to get someone’s attention and when trying to keep a relationship going. Admittedly, the density of Nozaki is something that can be trying for the viewer as well. Nonetheless, this couple also reminds us how to work around misunderstandings and how important it is to work together on projects. Having something to work on together allows them really see into each other’s minds and get to know what their strengths and weaknesses are.
5. Megumi & Chiaki from Nodame Cantabile
- Episodes: 23
- Aired: Jan. 2007 – Jun. 2007
On the one hand there’s Chiaki, a studious musician who has mastered violin and piano and now has his sights on being a composer. On the other, there’s Megumi, a childish pianist who can play beyond measure one moment and then horribly the next. When these two meet, things go boom, as they push each other to overcome the obstacles that are keeping them from advancing in their musical careers.
With moments of drama and comedy intermingled with every interaction, it is truly a delight to watch these two get on each other’s nerves. From the very beginning, it’s amazing to watch Megumi try to seduce Chiaki. It’s also amazing to watch Chiaki go into cleaning mode when he sees how much of a mess Megumi really is. Outside of the funny moments though, one of the best aspects of this show though is how clearly the two challenge one another. They really push each other outside of their comfort zones and in fact get into their largest arguments when they feel the other is not doing enough to reach his/her full potential.
4. Holo & Kraft from Ookami to Koushinryou (Spice and Wolf)
- Episodes: 25
- Aired: Jan. 2008 – Sep. 2009
Spice and Wolf follows the economic adventures of one traveling merchant, Kraft, and one wolf deity, Holo. This unlikely couple meet in a town that Holo had a long-standing tradition with, but now the town has essentially turned against her. Since Kraft was only passing through, she decides to hitch a ride with him and thus begins their mystical journey.
This couple is a reminder of how opposites attract. It’s where the other fails that you’re able to see just how well the other completes him/her. Where Holo is frivolous, Kraft is practical and where Kraft is calculating, Holo is wise. This is why they’re able to survive so many terrifying encounters as well as why the show has so many great comebacks. However, all of this wouldn’t amount to much if they didn’t show off how much they cared for each other with rather tremendous sacrifices.
3. Sophie & Howl from Howl no Ugoku Shiro (Howl’s Moving Castle)
- Episode: 1
- Aired: Nov. 2004
Howl’s Moving Castle is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece from the legendary Miyazaki. The plot follows an unconfident, young woman by the name of Sophie who receives a curse that ages her considerably. In order to become young again she seeks the help of one mischievous young mage by the name of Howl. Together the two skirt across war, politics, and love as they try to cure one another.
In terms of romance, this film is Miyazaki at his finest. The two characters pair up incredibly well and are able to really dig deep into the psyche of the other. It’s in the way that Sophie is able to hold Howl’s wandering eyes, while Howl inadvertently makes Sophie more confident that film progresses and pulls us in. Their growth is not only wonderful to watch but perfectly paced too. There’s never a moment when you sit there and doubt that such progress should have been made. In the end, their shared kiss is one of the most memorable and impressionable kisses in anime.
2. Takeo & Yamato from Ore Monogatari!! (My Love Story!!)
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: Apr. 2015 – Sep. 2015
Takeo and Yamato don’t necessarily break ground, in the sense of having the ultra popular falling for someone who’s generally seen as unappealing. Many shows have done that, albeit it’s usually the pretty guy falling for the girl that most skim over (Ouran, Wallflower, etc). However, Ore Monogatari takes this premise and makes it amazing by really diving into the personalities of Takeo and Yamato. Understanding just how gentle and shy Takeo is makes his every move towards Yamato that much more adorable. Yamato’s insights and wants are also extremely vital to keeping the show’s romance alive.
1. Yuri and Victor from Yuri!!! on Ice
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Oct. 2016 – Dec. 2016
If you did not expect these two lovebirds to reach the number one spot, then you have a) not watched one of the best shows that the fall 2016 season has to offer or b) have zero respect for both physical and artistic beauty. That second point might have gone too far, but this couple really heated up the ice and made for some spectacular scenes. In case you belong to the category that has yet to see the show, it’s about the world of competitive figure skating and it follows someone who bombed a major tournament last year and is unsure of what to do now.
Obviously, first and foremost is the awesomeness of their first kiss, which essentially blew up the internet. That aside, their relationship was really well done. Victor’s shortcomings as a coach and Yuri’s need to believe in himself allow the respective partner to help the other grow. Speaking of their growth, the creators did an awesome job, paralleling Yuri’s breakthrough moments with that of Victor’s. Oh, and let’s not forget the constant teasing and flirtation that was constant throughout, especially since Yuri (our shy little boy) was the first to tease Victor with his drunk dancing.
Final Thoguhts:
So you have a couple options for Valentine’s Day. You can decide to watch these with your significant other. You can choose to watch these alone and either be sad (for obvious reasons) or happy that no one’s making your life a complicated mess. OR you can decide that you’re going to insult someone until they love you, It seems to work in anime. Moving past that joke, are there any couples who you think represent this holiday?
Valentines, the event that marks the day of love, one full of surprises, smiles and tears. It’s maybe the day you finally swallow pride and fear and confess your love. Maybe it’s the day you put your special someone above all the things that make up your routine. Maybe you’d just hang out with close friends, do something special. The point of this holiday is to deepen the bonds between the ones you care for, showing that strange, warm and caring feeling we call love.
Love is possibly one of the most complex emotions to define, because no one knows how exactly to describe it, it’s different for every person and in every case; it’s unexplainable why we feel it or how it starts to be. Since this theme is so broad, I’ll focus on the anime couples who are romantically in love and actually did something to show it, after all, love’s about actions and not words.
This article contains spoilers.
10. Hinata x Shigure ( Hinata no Aoshigure)
- Episodes: OVA
- Aired: November 2013
First love. One of the most meaningful combination of words, an emotion that strikes even before we understand its meaning. Hinata is a boy that at a very young age is in love with his classmate, Shigure. He doesn't exactly know how, but he has decided to spend the rest of his life with her. He’s always day dreaming about their lives together as a couple but, Shigure doesn't have a clue! He’s still only watching her from afar. Hinata’s world shook when Shigure talks to him and invites him to take care of the school’s birds with her. Shigure’s passion are birds and Hinata’s passion is Shigure, so he accepts in a heartbeat. Shigure enjoys his company and help, and doesn't seem to be bothered much by the inappropriate situations they’ve been through.
As unexpected as Hinata’s happiness arrived, it leaves; Shigure’s family is moving away. Anguish fills Hinata’s days as he needs to let go of what he feels could have been his entire world. In this gray moment he remembered what was his most treasured desire, expressing his feelings. He does all he can to get his feelings to reach her, what he does next is almost surreal. To find out what he did, guess you’ll have to see this OVA, huh. This story will make you remember that pure feeling of a first love, a story you’ll remember forb a life time.
9. Bulma x Vegeta (DBZ)
- Episodes: 291
- Aired: April 1989 - January 1996
One of the most mismatched couples in history but amazingly it turns out great. It’s a mystery how this couple ended up together, I’d surely love to see a rom-com spinoff of these two. Vegeta met Bulma trying to kill her along with Krillin, this doesn't happen obviously. Even when she was scared of Vegeta, invites him to live with her family at Capsule Corp; blunt move for a girl with a boyfriend, RIP Yamcha. Bulma shows emotions for Vegeta scattered in bits and pieces through the series but nothing concrete, Vegeta was a jerk as always. Suddenly, Trunks was born? What happened here? No one really knows since Vegeta is still ruthless as ever, even towards Bulma. Future Trunks also says that his parents were the same in his reality, this means they end up together in whatever time line!
His relationship with Bulma does improve and he becomes a family man. Vegeta is ashamed of his soft side but Bulma has already found how to control him, by being more hardheaded and controlling than him; it's a strange relationship based on dominance. In some occasions, Vegeta showed that he’s fond of his wife when he gets pissed at Goku for wanting to share sexy pictures of Bulma, for saying Bulma was prettier than Chichi. Also, when he confronts Beerus for slapping Bulma. Later on, this couple has another baby, a girl name Bulla. Unthinkable but adorable relationship, no?
8. Nozaki x Sakura (Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: July 2014 - September 2014
It started as a one sided love that sparked from a simple action. Sakura, late for the school ceremony met Nozaki, who was sleeping on top of the closed gate and helped her jump over. This action is what started Sakura’s obsession with Nozaki. She tried to confess to him but he interprets it as if she wanted his autograph because he’s a manga artist. Nozaki looks dense, but I think he was just avoiding the situation. Even when friendzoned, Sakura didn't expect to end up in his bedroom so quickly… to help him paint the backgrounds of his manga. They have their little moments during the series but the most evident thing is that they spend every day together and at some point, they concluded both would miss each other if one is gone.
Sakura spends her days trying to appeal him and improve her “relationship”; probably being the worst “Notice me senpai” case in anime. As for Nozaki, even if his outer self is unresponsive to her, he did inspire on their first encounter to create a romance manga and he even based his beautiful main character, Mamiko, on Sakura’s image. It's like she is his muse. The romantic award for this show has to be the firework festival scene where they both express their deep feelings for “fireworks”.
7. Seiya x Latifa (Amagi Brilliant Park)
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: October 2014 - December 2014
If you saw this anime, you’re already flipping out, but listen to me! Yes, I know everyone thinks it should be Kanie Seiya and Sento but I’ll explain why it should NOT be. This whole series came to be because of a promise between Seiya and Latifa. “I will make you smile” Kanie said to Latifa as a child, and even now he tries his best to see it come true. Probably, the time he was about to confess to Sento he stopped himself because of this. Latifa trusts Seiya’s promise with her life, literally, that’s why she kisses him in the first episode and grants him her magic. Latifa has had feelings for Seiya since he was a child and Seiya wants to care for her and never see her cry again. This is a story of loyalty over love.
Although Seiya’s feeling for Sento do not feel like a one time emotional slip, they barely have nice times together, it’s only work. The times between Seiya and Latifa are different and in fact feel very romantic, especially towards the end of episode 12, where the situation becomes very emotional because Latifa doesn't want to forget the miracle Seiya bestowed in her life. In that moment, Seiya embraces her in hopes she doesn't forget it either, while she falls asleep in his arms. In the end Seiya breaks Princess Latifa’s curse. While remembering his time in Amagi Park, it's no coincidence that every time he thinks of Sento, an image of Latifa comes right after, and vice versa.
6. Mikaku x Noboru (Voices of a distant star)
- Episodes: OVA
- Aired: February 2002
This OVA has beautiful backgrounds and music but the character design is hard to swallow, please bare with it, it’s one of the most sad yet romantic tales you’ll ever see. Mikaku and Noboru are students that discovered their friendship became love in junior high but, life parted their ways, Noboru remained on Earth while Mikaku had to join an expedition to fight against aliens in space. They maintained a long distance relationship via text messages, this gave Mikaku strength to survive in battles. Although time seemed to stop for Mikaku, it slipped away for Noboru; the greater the distance between them, the more time it will take for her words to reach him.
One year has passed since the last message, Noboru thought trying another relationship would make him forget her but shortly after, his phone rang and his life was never the same. He must wait eight years between messages to hear from the love of his life... his feelings for her are so big, he decides to wait. In the meantime, he focused on shutting out his emotions towards anyone else but Mikako and join the space force. They were the strength of each other through the years, for Mikako as a fighter and for him in a daily life struggle. Regardless of time and distance, they think and feel the same emotions, wishing only to enjoy all the small things of life together. Will they meet again?
5. Futaba x Kou (Ao Haru Ride)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: July 2014 - September 2014
This couple shares moments so sweet that will make YOU feel butterflies. As middle schoolers, they were mutual first loves but not a couple. He fell in love with her because she was very girly and liked her smile, she fell for him because of his kind personality and scent. Because a family tragedy unknown to her, he moves away. Years after they meet again in high school. She clings to the idea that he’s the same child she once fell in love with but the person he used to be is gone. This turns into a story of two hard-headed teens falling in love all over again with their new selves.
What they liked in each other is gone, Futaba turned out to be a bit of a tomboy and Kou has turned rude and cold. Their feelings instead of going away, actually increase but it gets really dramatic and complicated. They share so much “about to kiss” scenes and adorable slips that just make you desperate for them to confess. Their most iconic and romantic moment happens in episode 4, so imagine what’s in it for you throughout the season!
“I like you. I came here to get rejected properly. To end this, so I can move forward. To make me convinced of this broken heart, I want to get rejected properly.” - Yoshioka Futaba
"I have never loved anyone else besides you." - Mabuchi Kou
4.Yuzuki x Kazuki
(Selector Infected / Spread WIXOSS)
- Episodes: 24 (Two Series)

Imagine spending every day next to the love of your life, growing old together, that person knows all about you and cares for you unconditionally but there is one thing they can’t ever know… that you love them. A relationship where you feel there’s nothing wrong but the world says it just isn't right, how far will you go to make it real? This is the situation of Yuzuki, who is in love with her twin brother Kazuki. In her world there is a chance to make ANY wish come true if you become a Selector for a card game called WIXOSS. Simply win a couple of battles against other Selectors but if you lose 3 times your wish will backfire and become your worst nightmare.
Yuzuki loved her brother ever since she can remember, but always held back since society condemns her relationship. She longs for having a romantic and physical relationship with her brother so badly she is willing to risk everything playing WIXOSS. After the most agonizing turn of events, her wish does come true. It wasn't easy but Kazuki does in fact confess he has felt the same for her all his life and decides to really start a relationship with her. Holding hands isn’t the only thing these two siblings did, but to know more, go see the anime ♥.
3. Meiko x Jinta (AnoHana)
- Episodes: 11
- Aired: April 2011 - June 2011
This match up sounds depressing, but they had to be here. Meiko died when Jinta was a child but during his teens, she appears again as a ghost. She can't rest in peace until she grants a wish, but doesn't remember what it was, so Jinta sets out to try and grant that last wish, whatever it is. In reality Jinta never forgot about her, and neither did his other childhood friends. Meiko can only be seen by Jinta because they share a deep bond, a love that never faded even in death. Jinta always regrets not telling Meiko how he felt but now he has a second chance. Letting her go again is more than Jinta can handle but he still puts her above his own selfishness. He fixes his relationship with his friends, thinking that’s what she wanted, costing him great pain and tears.
Tears actually triggered Meiko’s final goodbye, she never wanted to hurt him but she promised his dying mother to make him cry. Through the series it’s obvious they have a romantic connection but since Meiko died as a child, we think her sweet actions towards him were just innocence. In the end, they confirm their feelings after Jinta says he likes her and she replies in the cutest way. What she said couldn't be expressed better than from her own words:
“It's the type of 'like' where you want to marry me, right?...I love you. Jintan. It's the "I want to marry you" type of I love you."
2. Sawako x Kazehaya (Kimi ni Todoke)
- Episodes: 37 (two seasons)
- Aired: October 2009 - March 2011
If you’ve watched lots of romantic anime, this couple must be among your top 5. Sawako is a misunderstood girl and Kazehaya is the only one that can see past her creepy actions. She admired Kazehaya for being surrounded by friends and being so bright, she didn't realize her admiration was really a crush. With his help she gets a handful of close friends but something’s changed, she can’t see him as a friend, she doesn't want to be ‘just’ his friend. Kazehaya feels the same but he doesn't show anything concrete until he rejects Kurumi, his most likely couple match. He’s the kind of guy that prefers a beautiful soul over a beautiful face.
Kazehaya was interested in Sawako because of her smile but it doesn't mean he was always in love with her. After he gets jealous constantly of the guys surrounding her, he notices his interest did turn to love but wanted to give Sawako space for her to decide, which in the end, she initiated the relationship. Insecurities always get the best of Sawako but Kazehaya always does something to remind her he picked her for being just like that. Now, wouldn't you like someone like that to be your valentine?
1. Sakura x Syaoran (Card Captor Sakura)
- Episodes: CCS: 70
- Aired: April 1998 - March 2000, April 2005 - November 2006 (two seasons)
A love that transcends even to a whole different series needs to be my number one. It all started as kids back in the series Card Captor Sakura; Sakura Kinomoto and Syaoran Li were rivals who gathered the Clow Cards and wind up joining forces as they get closer to each other. Initially, Syaoran was very rude towards her, but he was just a little brat, as he matures he realizes he was falling in love, he was the first of the two to realize his feelings. Sakura was madly in love with Yukito, her brother’s best friend, but very slowly falls for Syaoran, the final confirmation was when she meets the Li family in Hong Kong, where she literally creates the “Love card” out of her emotions. In CCS, even though all hints point towards them ending up together as a couple, nothing concrete is ever said. UNTILL…
Five years later, CLAMP makes the manga / anime Tsubasa Chronicle, offering an alternate version of the life of this couple, and CLAMP went all out. From here, it becomes a very complicated and confusing relationship.
Conclusion
Hopefully, we got you into the mood of the season, if not, know that anime is always there for you in times of love, happiness, and hope. You’re never alone! What are your favorite couples for valentines? Let us know your lovely opinions in the comments below❣❣.
